SEPTEMBER 2018 | THIRD TERM | VOLUME 1 # 26
We are moving full steam ahead into the Third Term with a seriously busy calendar and activities
and/or matches on every day. I often say to myself, ‘I can’t believe we are in our first year at Steyn City
School’.
The Sports Department has implemented interesting Physical Education lessons over the last two
weeks with horse riding in Grade 3, mountain biking in Grade 4, golf in Grade 5, and dancing in Grades
6 and 7. We view each of these activities as life-long learning opportunities as our students develop into
active, social, and respectful individuals. These activities are those that are often taken up on a social
level and can lead to maintaining an active lifestyle, which our bodies require so dearly. We hope that
by exposing our Steyn City School students to the various activities they will find one that they love and
will continue in the future.
On the sporting front, I find it absolutely fascinating to see the improvements in individuals and in most
cases in students who don’t even realize they are slowly improving in whichever sport they have
chosen. They are not only improving in the physical skill of the sport but also at a social level when
handling the team’s dynamics. This is the part that fascinates me, as every team is different and it is
wonderful to see how certain individuals rise to leadership and teamwork.
Students are learning valuable lessons daily on the sports field and know that there is more to sport
than just winning and losing. We ensure that we express to the students that it is important to celebrate
moments that matter. This week’s examples:
…from the ports irector’s esk
• The moment at the end of our mini cricket match on Monday vs Central Hub when the Steyn
City School Mini Cricket Team stood in single file and genuinely shook their oppositions hand
after the game and said well-played; and
• The moment when I saw the Under 9 Boys Cricket Team all huddled up in a circle at the end of
their practice with their coach discussing whatever it was they were discussing; and
• The moment a student stops riding her or his bike during mountain biking skills training to help a
fellow classmate who is struggling to balance on the bicycle and eventually walks the skills
circuit to ensure that the circuit is completed.
These small moments were highlights of sportsmanship: a team, belief, care, and friendship.
Next weekend is the Steyn City’s school run. While it is not a compulsory event we encourage all our
Steyn City School families to come and show their support. If students participate in the run and wear
their house shirt, they will earn a merit point for their house! Please note that children under the age of
10 will need to be accompanied by an adult. We are also collecting clothes, stationery, toys, and sports
equipment that can be used by schools in Diepsloot. Collection bins will be located at our school from
next week. Please support us in this drive, the details of which appear in the flyer elsewhere in this
edition of the Shout Out.
