“We proclaim how great you are and tell of the wonderful things you have done.”

(Psalm 75:1)

It is hard to believe that last year at this time, I was writing my first article for this

newsletter. I remember typing the article as I sat by Lake Sarah in Maple Plain,

Minnesota. I was filled with nerves and uncertainty as my family and I started out on

this new journey of being the lead pastor of the Greensburg Alliance Church. We knew

without a doubt, that God was calling us to this journey. We were excited, but we had

no idea what was going to happen. We quickly found a very loving church that has

loved our family and made us feel at home from the first day. We found a church that

wanted to be the hands and feet of Jesus to a dying world. We found a great ministry

team that has worked together like we have been working together for years. We

found church leadership that would never be satisfied treading water, but wanted to

go out into the deep water to make a big difference. It was confirmed over and over

again in this past year, that God has led us to Greensburg Alliance Church.

We have seen a little over a twenty percent increase in our attendance this past

year. I do not say that to pat myself on the back, because I did not make that happen,

you did. You invited family, neighbors, friends, and co-workers to church. I want to say

thank you - thank you for reaching out, thank you for being bold, and thank you for

being world changers. We have seen over forty adults and even more kids accept

Jesus as their Savior in these last twelve months. We have seen record numbers in

Children's Ministry while Youth Ministry continues to grow. We have people sitting in

the pews every Sunday that would never believe that they would be in church a year

ago. We have seen God working amongst his people and for that we give God, and

God alone, all the glory for the things He is doing.

While this first year was incredible, I believe the best is yet to come. I believe this

next year we will make even a bigger impact for the Kingdom. In these next twelve

months, our Children’s Ministry wing is going to undergo a major renovation. We pray

that this will help us to accommodate all the new children that will be coming. We will

be launching Life Groups, that will meet throughout the 2018-2019 school year.

They will be meeting at homes throughout Westmoreland County, as well as the

church. We will be working on community outreaches that will give us an opportunity

to meet needs in the community. We will have more opportunities to do Missions

trips at home and abroad. While we thank God for all he has done in these last

twelve months, it was just a nibble of what God is calling us to. Let us not grow tired

of doing good.

I would like to end this with saying thank you. Thank you for making this transition

so smooth. Thank you for all the prayers, love, and support you have given my family

and myself over these last twelve months. I look forward to serving with you for

another year, and God willing, many more years to come.

Young At Heart - Lunch at Bob Evans - Thursday, August 2 Due to Vacation Bible School being held at the church the first week of August, Young at Heart will meet for

lunch at Bob Evans Restaurant (in front of Walmart) on Thursday, August 2 at 11:30am.

Young At Heart is a ministry for those 55 years or older. We get together for lunch, prayer, fellowship, and

have a guest speaker or program on the first Thursday of each month, March through December. If you are

looking for a place to connect, we would love to have you join us!

Have you ever wanted to run a race, get a t-shirt and medal, but don’t like running? Then this is the event for

you! It is not a 5k - it is a .5k. That's right, not even two full laps around a regulation track! There will be a

hydration station featuring an assortment of donuts and coffee at the half-way point. We are not keeping time

so feel free to enjoy these treats. Your kids can run with you, but if they don’t register they will not receive a

t-shirt or medal. If you say 'that's great, but I don't want to run at all', that's fine too; just purchase the VIP

package. In this package you will receive a shirt, a bigger medal, a sticker for your car, and the best part is that

someone else will run for you!

We will have a DJ set up playing music throughout the morning. Bring some money and hang out for a little

while after you are done. We'll have food trucks, snow cones, and fresh-squeezed lemonade. This will be a fun

day for the entire family. All proceeds from ticket sales for this event will help our students go to LIFE 2019,

our denomination’s tri-annual youth convention. Go to our website, www.greensburgalliancechurch.com, to

register and start training for your first .5k race!

Sunday School and Growth Classes - “A Place for Growing… A Place for YOU!” Our children’s small groups meet for Sunday School at 9:15am in the Children’s Ministry wing.

Our Youth Jr. High and Sr. High classes meet at 9:15am in Rooms 250-260. Adult Growth Classes are

offered at 9:15am and 10:45am. Pick up a brochure at the rack in the Lobby for details.

Sunday Morning Adult Growth Classes - Starting August 12 through September 16

9:15am: Ephesians - Teacher: Todd Miller - Classroom: 240 Ephesus was a very wealthy and strategic city for Paul to found a church. According to Acts 19 Paul spent

over two years building relationships and ministering to the believers. When Paul was in prison he wrote a

letter to the Ephesians which speaks of the church as the body of Christ and emphasizes the need for unity

in that body. In this six week class we will cover much of the content of Paul’s letter which was most likely

shared with various churches in Asia Minor. This class will examine the teachings and theology of Paul and

then look at how we can apply those truths to our daily lives.

10:45am: Why Me? - Teacher: Barry Bupp - Classroom: 250/260 Suffering of any kind can be a painful, lonely process. When Christians suffer, our first response is often to

question God and seek some understanding for our pain. In this study we will explore why it is not always

possible to find easy answers to life's most difficult questions. But, we will also see that it is possible to find

good and God in every circumstance. It is possible to experience joy alongside pain, and to live a good life in

spite of the nagging question, "Why Me?"

Baby Bottle Campaign for Lifeway Pregnancy Center The annual Baby Bottle Campaign for the Lifeway Pregnancy Center is now underway. If you would like to

participate, stop by the Welcome Center to pick up bottles. Fill bottles with coins and currency during the

summer, or place a check in it and return to the church. The last day to return bottles is Sunday, September 30.

Sunday Morning Adult Growth Classes - August 5

9:15am: Genesis 1-11 - Teacher: Jared Burns - Classroom: 240

10:45am: Life Changing Prayer - Teacher: George Cross - Classroom: 250/260

GAC Garden Exchange Our GAC Garden Exchange is up and running! Participation is simple; on Sunday morning just bring your

extra garden produce to our table in the Fellowship Hall to share with others at Greensburg Alliance Church.

The produce is available to anyone who can use it whether you have a garden or not. The best part is that

each week any unused produce will be donated to the Welcome Home Homeless Shelter in downtown

Greensburg. Please see Jamie Callen with any questions.

greensburgalliancechurch.com You can find all the information you need to know about our church with easy to use menus. If you miss a

Sunday, don’t worry! You can listen to sermons from previous Sundays. There are also printable PDF versions

of our newsletter, monthly calendars, and registration forms.

Reminder: No Youth Group on August 2 (VBS) or August 30 (End of Summer Break)

GAC .5k - Saturday, August 11, 10:00am On Saturday August 11 our church will be hosting a community .5k to raise money for our upcoming trip to the

LIFE conference in 2019 (see below for details). While the registration for the event itself will be raising the bulk of

the money for our trip, there will be a lemonade stand manned by our teens (roughly 9:00am-12:30pm). Any teens

that may be interested in helping may sign up in the Youth Sunday School room. Even if you aren’t planning on

going to the LIFE conference, consider participating in the event itself to support your fellow teens. See our

website www.greensburgalliancechurch.com for more details on event registration.

Mini Golf & Go-Carts - Thursday, August 16, 6:30pm On Thursday August 16 from 6:30-8:45pm, we will be meeting at Statler's Fun Center (386 Frye Farm Road,

Greensburg, PA) for go-carts and mini golf. This outing will cost $13 (paid on the day of the outing) which will

include a round of mini golf, two rides on the go-carts, and a scoop of Hershey’s ice cream. Students who are over

age 16 and have their driver’s license with them will be able to use the Pro go-carts (which are faster). Students

should bring extra money if they are interested in the batting cages or the arcade. There will be a prize awarded for

the student with the best mini-golf score.

Please note that you will need to be dropped off and picked up at Statler’s. Because this event is outdoors, if

there is substantial rain, we will be having Youth Group at the church instead. Please sign up in the Youth Sunday

School Room.

GAC Family Picnic and Baptism - Sunday, August 19, 5:30pm On Sunday, August 19 our Church Picnic and Baptism Service will be held at Youngwood Park and Pool (801

South 10th Street, Youngwood, PA, Pavilion #2) beginning at 5:30pm. We rented the entire pool for our church to

use, so please come prepared for an awesome night of swimming and hanging out with your friends. Last year was

a blast. If you are interested in being baptized, please let Pastor Rigel know, or mark your bulletin information card

on Sunday morning. All students being baptized will have a chance to meet with Pastor Rigel to talk through the

meaning of baptism and its importance in the life of a believer.

LIFE 2019 As many of you know, LIFE is our denomination’s tri-annual youth conference. The theme of this year’s LIFE

conference is “Awaken”. The LIFE conference is meant to play a very important role in the spiritual formation of

High schoolers that attend C&MA churches around the nation. There are amazing speakers, inspiring times of

worship, service projects, and experiences that are designed to powerfully connect the participants to Jesus and

His calling on their lives. LIFE 2019 will take place in Orlando Florida July 9-13. 2019 (Allow extra time for travel).

At this point details are still being released and we are finalizing the overall cost. Because we will be flying to the

conference we will be closing registration by the end of October, 2018. This will secure a less expensive

registration price and enable us to book our plane tickets in a timely manner.

Stay tuned for more details and a registration packet before the end of August. Be ready to register in a timely

manner when the opportunity comes around. One final note, the National Director of Alliance Youth, Daniel Boal,

will be speaking at GAC on Sunday September 23. He is directly involved with all of the planning for this amazing

event. Don’t miss out, the opportunity only comes around once every 3 years!

Moving Up Day - Sunday, September 2 On Sunday, September 2, the children’s Sunday School classes and Sunday Morning Worship classes will

“move up” to their new classes. Please note that there will be room changes this year and information will be

available at check-in on Sunday mornings detailing the changes.

We are also introducing a new program for 5th and 6th grade students called “Club 56”. The new Orange

Curriculum will begin at this time, and lessons will be identical for both 9:15 and 10:45 Services.

If your 5th or 6th grader attends Children’s Ministries during both services, and they do not want to hear the

same lesson twice, the other alternative will be to attend the regular church service with their parents.

Contact Melissa Bartels in the Church Office with any questions you may have regarding these changes,

724-837-1122.

The Christian & Missionary Alliance Bible Quizzing Internationals was held at Redeemer

University in Hamilton, Canada, the week of July 16-20. Our district took 2 all star teams

(5 quizzers on each team) to represent Western PA. 20 teams representing 13 districts in

the United States and Canada participated. After the 12 preliminary quizzes, WPA 1 was

in 12th place and WPA 2 came in 5th place. In the Consolation A brackets, WPA 1 took 4

quizzes to make it into the Consolation Finals, placing 2nd in that quiz and finishing the

tournament in 11th place. WPA 2 was able to advance to the Top 9 Brackets. They

quizzed extremely well in their 4 quizzes and ended up just missing the Finals by one question. They finished

the tournament in 4th place. Three Canadian teams made the Finals, with Central Canada winning it all in just

two quizzes. Congratulations to all those quizzers who participated!

With Internationals behind us, it is now time to get ready for a new Bible Quizzing year. This year, students

will be studying the Gospel of John. Any student in Grades 3-12 are able to participate. There is a junior

division for the younger students in grades 3-6, and 2 senior divisions for grades 7-12. 7th and 12th graders

new to quizzing will want to start in the Senior B division where the jumps are slower and more of the question

is heard. Quiz meets cover specific chapters and are often held the first Saturday morning of every month from

October through April.

If you are interested in participating or have any questions, please contact Jayne or Mark Obringer at 724-

861-3548. We will give you the Bible quiz books and optional study guides. We would also be very happy to

help students prepare for meets and practice jumping with the quiz lights, but if your student doesn't have time

for that, he can still study on his own at home and participate in the monthly quiz meets. Come join us for a fun

way to motivate young people to memorize God's Word!

Attention Parents! Children’s Ministry Registration 2018-2019 New registration forms are required each year for our Children’s Ministries. Even if you have completed a

form in the past, we need an updated one in order to keep our records correct and up to date. Information is

kept confidential and is used for church business purposes only. Registration forms are available at the

Children’s Ministry desk in the Fellowship Hall. You may also register your children online at our website:

greensburgalliancechurch.com. Pre-registration makes our ministries run smoothly so completing your

registration form as soon as possible allows us to have your children placed in the proper classes for easier

check-in.

Begins Wednesday, September 5, 6:30pm

Awana is fun with a purpose… to reach and train children for Jesus Christ. Each week there are Bible lessons,

Scripture reciting, games, music, and lots of other fun activities. Club begins on Wednesday, September 5, with

check-in starting at 6:30pm at the Children’s Ministry registration desk. Please enter the building at the

Awana/Office entrance. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to complete a new Children’s Ministry

registration form prior to opening night.

Our program is comprised of three age-appropriate clubs:

Awana Volunteers Needed! Kids represent the greatest opportunity to make a long-term impact on our world for Christ. Those kids who

come to faith at an early age discover God’s purpose for their lives and hope for the future. Do you have a heart

for these kids to know Jesus and be discipled in their faith? Then joining our Awana team is for you!

Our club starts on Wednesday, September 5, and it’s not too late to join our amazing team. Training is

provided with various ways to be involved and flexibility to serve as your schedule allows. If interested,

please indicate on the back of your Sunday bulletin information card or come to the team meeting on

Wednesday, August 15. You may also contact Melissa Bartels in the Church Office, 724-837-1122, with any

questions you may have.

Awana Team Meeting - Wednesday, August 15 - All Leaders & Helpers, Please Plan to Attend Our team of leaders and helpers makes Awana possible and we want to meet to celebrate and prepare for

the start of this ministry. A team meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 15, 6:00pm in the Fellowship Hall.

All leaders and helpers are encouraged to attend, whether you are new to Awana or are returning from last year.

Dinner will be provided. Updates on club news, procedures, and plans for the coming year will be reviewed.

Training will also be available for our new helpers. Don't miss this opportunity to support, encourage, and be

united as a team as we enter this new session!

Preschoolers - Age 3 & 4 In Cubbies, preschoolers have a fun, friendly place to learn about God’s greatness.

There are games, basic Bible memory, and a two-year curriculum that encourages

parents to get involved in their child’s learning. To begin Cubbies your child must be 3

years old before September 1 and potty trained.

Kindergarten through Grade 2 Sparks builds on the material taught in our preschool club. It ignites the curiosity of

children to learn about the people and events of the Bible, building a foundation of

wisdom for knowing Christ. Meetings combine learning with fun to create an

atmosphere of excitement. Children love their red vests, the games, and spending

time with leaders and friends!

Grades 3 through 6 The goal of T&T is to offer opportunities for kids to understand, retain, and apply what

they’re learning in the Scriptures. We will be working with the third of four books in the

T&T update series, “Agents of Grace”. Lessons will continue to lead clubbers through a

deeper dive into the Scriptures. There will also be loads of fun with our team-oriented

games!

Prayer Requests & Praises

We welcomed our son, Ellison “Ellis” Douglas Lawrence, to the world on

June 27. Pray for our family and ministries as we make adjustments and

transitions due to arrival of this precious little one!

Keep praying for the new contacts made with people in the community.

Pray our relationships with them can go deeper.

As we continue with tutoring, pray that we are able to go

even deeper still with our use of the language. Also pray for

our tutor who is not a believer. May God open a door.

Roos Ministry News & Prayer Requests

Thank you for praying for our summer ministries. Please continue to pray as

we are in the process of planning our upcoming fall events.

Pray for our ongoing Thursday day/evening gatherings where we can continue

to explore the person of Jesus with our friends both old and new. We are excited

for what God is doing and going to do.

Pray for the next steps in the Alpha series. We have had a consistent small

group of people who have come and explored faith with us. We are now looking

into what should happen next with this ministry. We believe that God is leading

us to continue a “discovery night” type of outreach - an evening where non

believers could continue to question, explore, and be welcomed into the life of

the church.

Pray for our Connected Café Ministry Center, and for continued financial

support.
