Ordinary Time - B

In week 12 of my summer sacred study series on the 4 Eucharistic Prayers for Various Needs [EPFVN], which is one EP with 4 themes, we reflect on the special intentions particular to EPFVN-III: Jesus, the Way to the Father. These inserts are added after the anamnesis [remember], offering and epiclesis [calling down the Holy Spirit on those entering into Holy Communion] and before we remember the dead and all the Saints:

EPFVN - III: Jesus, the Way to the Father - Special Intentions

The Priest, with hands extended, says:By our partaking of this mystery,

almighty Father, give us life through your Spirit,

grant that we may be conformed to the image of your Son,

and confirm us in the bond of communion,

together with N. our Pope and N. our Bishop, with all other

Bishops,with Priests and Deacons,

and with your entire people.Grant that all the faithful of the Church,

looking into the signs of the times by the light of faith,

may constantly devote themselvesto the service of the Gospel.

Keep us attentive to the needs of all that, sharing their grief and pain,

their joy and hope,we may faithfully bring them

the good news of salvationand go forward with them

along the way of your Kingdom.

Partakers in a Mystery. When the Church uses the term ‘mystery’ - as in the ‘sacred mysteries’ - she does not mean we are dealing with a puzzle or enigma that we could solve, if we just piece together all the evidence and follow it to its logical conclusion. The ‘mysteries’ of our faith are beyond our human comprehension; they are the tenets of our faith that were revealed by God - but not explained - to us. So we approach them with reverent awe, curious openness and an insatiable willingness to

learn more. The more we grapple with and strive to understand these mysteries, and the more we allow ourselves to be led and fed by them, the more Christ-like we become. This is exactly what this insert prays for: that we become more and more conformed to the image of Christ, who willingly and totally embraced His Father’s mysterious will. And the more each Christian is conformed to Christ, to each other, to those who lead the Church and to her teachings, the more our ‘Holy Communion’ becomes an even greater reality.Seeing the Signs of the Times By the Light of Faith. There is certainly no shortage of those willing to point out to us how the ‘signs of the times’ are always changing, and that we should - or even must - ‘change with the times.’ However, while the Church always adapts herself to many things, she never, ever contradicts or rejects divine revelation, godly codes of conduct, biblical ideals or any precepts of the Lord. Devoted to the Service of the Gospel. To paraphrase a famous quote, “Ask not what the Gospel can do for you; ask what you can do for the Gospel.” For by ‘doing’ the Gospel we receive; by living the Gospel we proclaim it to others, not merely in words but more importantly in deeds. And as the next section explains, we should be most proud of how devoted the Catholic Church is to the service of the Gospel. Attentive to the Needs of All with Gospel Hope and Joy. Many media and other pundits are quick to point out and overly focus on the Church’s flaws and faults; sadly, since the human persons who make up the Church are sinners, we have, had and always will have a dark side for which we must do penance and seek to correct. But we should be very proud that our Church is not only exemplary - but often the best when it comes to social justice, care for the unwanted, poor or needy. Jesus was so right when he said, “The poor you will always have with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them.” {Mark 14:7a] Some use this as an excuse to do nothing, which is certainly not what Jesus meant. For He relies on us to share each other’s grief and pain until we all make it safely into His Kingdom! Amen.

This Weekend’s ReadingsTwenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Isaiah 35:4-7aIsaiah tells the people to be strong and unafraid. God will save his people, and the blind will see, the deaf will hear, and the lame will walk. Streams will come forth in the desert, the sandy ground will become springs of water.Second Reading: James 2:1-5James encourages the people to never show favoritism. He discusses an usher who escorted a rich man to the best seat, while ignoring a poor man. God chose poor people to be rich in faith, so we should never judge people by their riches.

Gospel: Mark 7:31-37Some people brought a deaf man who could not speak to Jesus and begged him to lay his hand on the man. Jesus opened the man’s ears and cured his speech impediment. He ordered the people not to tell anyone, but they were too amazed to keep this to themselves.

Donations appreciated. The Pope and Abortion Forgiveness

As I often mention, we must get accurate information about papal statements and other Catholic issues from orthodox, proper sources. The confusion caused by most media by their inaccurate, incomplete reports about Pope Francis’ ‘abortion forgiveness permission’ certainly proves my point. For by omitting all the facts, many media sources caused some to fear they were not forgiven by the Priest to whom they confessed an abortion. Here’s ‘the rest of the story’ as we say. Unlike some countries, most - if not all US Bishops have long granted their Priests the faculty to forgive abortion and the penalty of excommunication IF it was even incurred - for not all who have or procure an abortion are always excommunicated! To learn more about this complex issue, visit the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website: usccb.org and read the article Cardinal O’Malley Welcomes Pope’s Year of Mercy Plan for Post-Abortion Healing and its attachment: hopeafterabortion.com. And please pray that all those wounded by abortion or ANY sin will be reconciled to God, His Church and one another NOW or in the upcoming ‘Year of Mercy.’ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

You will gather insights into enriching your marriage and drawing each other deeper into God’s love. There is no cost or materials required for this program. September 30th - December 9th, 2015There are 16 prophetic books in the Old Testament, with the length equal to the New Testament! Beginning with this bible study, we now have an online capability to supplement our usual program.

Our program will run as usual, beginning with hospitality and prayer, then breaking into discussion groups on the questions, and finally gathering to watch the DVD together.

RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Have you or anyone you know been considering the possibility of becoming a member of the Catholic Church? Is there someone in your life with whom you’d like to share their Catholic faith?Have you been coming to Mass for years and feel that now is the time for you to become Catholic?Have you been experiencing a desire to receive Jesus in the Eucharist? Whatever your reasons might be for choosing to become Catholic, beneath that choice is God who is calling you to “Come and see!”The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the way in which adults become fully active, participating members of the Catholic Church. Come to any Mass the weekend of

September 19th & 20th. There will be speakers at each Mass talking about their experience in the RCIA. Following each Mass you will have the opportunity to talk with the speaker and the RCIA team to receive more information and to have any questions answered.

Contact our RCIA Director, Diane Luceri, at 782-1475 X 14 or [email protected], at any time to find out more information or to set up an appointment.

Elijah’s Promise Soup Kitchen in New Brunswick

The Knights of Columbus Council 15540 at SEAS is pleased to announce our Third Annual Charity Golf Event is nearly upon us. Last year, over $6,500 was raised to fund the many outreach programs of the council: Elijah’s Promise, Lyon's VA Hospital, Life Choices in Phillipsburg, the Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program, the Home for Battered Woman, Immaculata H.S., and the Center for Great Expectations. This is our single largest fundraising event of the year. So, in order to continue supporting these programs, we are asking everyone who can participate as a Sponsor to please send a check to Tim Connolly at 48 Copper Penny Rd. Flemington, NJ 08822. The fun begins Monday, September 21st at Beaver Brook Country Club. Play is open to all. Pamphlets with details will be handed out after this week's Masses. As many have requested, this year we will have a dinner only option so more may participate.
