From the Pastor June 14, 2015 11 th Sunday in Ordinary Time - B Today starts a summer sacred study series on the least used of the 13 Eucharistic Prayers [EP] - which is really only one EP with four variations or themes. Sometimes we forget - not only how novel - but how truly earthshattering it is that the Roman Catholic Church now has 13 EP’s or Eucharistic Prayers! That’s because for over 1,500 years - until the reforms promulgated after the Second Vatican Council [1962-1965] - there was only one EP: the long, theological and poetically profound Roman Canon or EP I. Against much opposition and [what I now agree were] well-founded fears that adding shorter, simpler EP’s would lead to a devaluing of and lesser respect for the Blessed Sacrament, 3 ‘new’ EP’s were promulgated in 1968: EP II [which is basically the ‘outline’ of an EP composed by a priest named Hippolytus in the 200’s], EP III and EP IV. For the Holy Year 1975, which was themed ‘Renewal and Reconciliation,’ Pope Paul VI granted provisional, limited permission to use 3 Children’s EP’s and 2 EP’s with the theme of reconciliation - but only on an experimental basis and for just 3 years: 1974-1977. While Pope Paul VI did not grant permission for them to be printed in any official Roman Missals, he did allow them to be used for 3 more years, until 1980, when the now Saint John Paul II promulgated them as valid additions to the universal Roman Missal ‘until further notice.’ But in the 2011 3 rd edition of the Roman Missal the re-translated EP’s for Reconciliation, which we will reflect on in Lent 2016 [which is less than 8 months away] were placed right alongside the venerable and ancient EP’s I, II, III and IV. The 3 EP’s for Children are still awaiting retranslation; the future of their use is unknown at this time. None of the EP’s composed during the ‘time of experimentation’ were added to the currently used 3 rd edition of the Roman Missal - except for the four variations of the EP for Various Needs - which is the topic of our summer sacred study series. I usually pray the 4 th variation of this EP on Father’s Day for it extols God as “our Father … who cares for all your sons and daughters …“ and because it is the only EP that mentions Deacons - and our Parish customarily has the Deacon preach on the 3 rd Sunday of the month. The 1974 Eucharistic Prayers for Various Needs . During the ‘time of experimentation’ mentioned above, many EP’s were composed on a local or national level by various Religious Orders, sects or groups. At first, Rome allowed the National Conference of Catholic Bishops in each country to grant permission for any EP’s ‘created’ in their territory - but only for use in the area within their jurisdiction. However, things began to spin out of control; an EP composed in Portuguese for use in Brazil was directly translated into other languages for use in other countries. EP for Various Needs - which is the topic of our summer sacred study series. I usually pray the 4th variation of this EP on Father’s Day for it extols God as “our Father … who cares for all your sons and daughters …“ and because it is the only EP that mentions Deacons - and our Parish customarily has the Deacon preach on the 3rd Sunday of the month. The 1974 Eucharistic Prayers for Various Needs.During the ‘time of experimentation’ mentioned above, many EP’s were composed on a local or national level by various Religious Orders, sects or groups. So Rome ‘reined in’ the process; why? The main reasons Rome ‘took over’ the process were: a concern for orthodoxy and a desire to maintain uniformity across the globe by making sure every land and nation, people and tongue was praying the exact same thing. So Rome required that all new EP’s to be translated FIRST into Latin, the universal language of the Church, before they were translated into any other language, so all had the same ’starting point.’ We all know what happens in that old game called ‘telephone’ where, as a message is passed from person to person, it gets altered along the way. So Rome wisely requires the ‘official’ translation of its orations and teachings be in Latin - and that every translation be based on the same Latin text and ideas. That’s mainly why the Mass in English was recently re-translated: as Saint John Paul II travelled the globe he realized English speaking Catholics, who used a ‘very loose’ translation of the Latin texts and ideas, were not praying the ‘same theology’ as the rest of the world. So - not to squash creativity - but to secure uniformity - Rome sets the ‘Latin standard’ for all translations.

In this summer sacred study series I hope to help you appreciate the beauty of the four variations of the EP created for the occasion of a Synod in Switzerland, approved in 1974, now added to the Roman Missal, although to my knowledge, no missalette or hymnal includes these EP’s. Next week: the Preface I will use on Father’s Day.

The Catholic Social Teaching highlighted in this edition is ‘Call to Family, Community and Participation.’ Here’s a peek inside this issue, with a focus on family:* As Catholics prepare for the World Meeting

of Families, which will be held in Philadelphia in September, we examine ways participation in family life and society go hand-in-hand.

* The Deferred Action for Parental Accountability, or DAPA, was announced by President Obama in late-November that would benefit many immigrant families by keeping children together with their immigrant parents. As we wait in joyful hope of DAPA’s eventual implementation, we look at what it would mean for immigrants who qualify.

* Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen strives to keep families who are experiencing difficulties and hardships safe and intact through the provision of its programs and social services designed to strengthen families. CCDOM Behavioral Health and Leadership team members share how the organization offers a unique approach to family services, blending faith with best practices in social work.

There’s much more! We invite you to read the entire newsletter at www.diometuchen.org/public-policy-newsletter. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
