WELCOME
REVOLUTIONARY CANCER RESEARCH AND COMPASSIONATE PATIENT CARE AT DANA-FARBER
Thanks to your support and dedication, this year
Dana-Farber achieved the following breakthroughs:
■ Opened the first-of-its-kind Center for the Prevention of
Progression, providing patients with blood cancer precursor
conditions a roadmap for monitoring and care
■ Discovered two distinct subtypes of pancreatic
neuroendocrine tumors that could help predict the likelihood
of recurrence
■ Solved the mystery of how BRCA1 mutations lead to breast
cancer, offering the potential to develop a non-surgical way to
prevent this malignancy in women with BRCA1 mutations
■ Demonstrated that an artificial intelligence tool can
help extract information from unstructured radiology
reports, detecting the presence of lung cancer and whether
it is responding to treatment
■ Found that a combination of immunotherapy and
a second drug was more effective than either drug alone for
women with hard-to-treat ovarian cancer
■ Showed for the first time that a vaccine can spur an
immune response in glioblastoma, using a personalized
“neoantigen” vaccine approach pioneered at Dana-Farber

Dear Jimmy Fund Golf supporters,
As we close another successful Jimmy Fund Golf season, I’d like to congratulate and thank each of you for your involvement. With your dedication and support, Jimmy Fund Golf presented by Mohegan Sun raised a record-breaking $8.2 million in 2019 through 18-hole tournaments, golf marathons, mini golf events, and sponsorships. As a valuable member of our community, you are changing the lives of cancer patients and their families; we cannot thank you enough.
As Chairman of the Jimmy Fund, I’ve witnessed firsthand the commitment of the golf community to fighting cancer. Every drive, chip, and putt from a Jimmy Fund Golf supporter this year helped physician-scientists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute continue to make progress in the fight against cancer, leading innovative clinical trials and providing world-class clinical care to adults and children with cancer.
Dana-Farber is a leader in delivering the highest-quality patient care and remains at the forefront of cancer research, not just in Boston, but around the world. A great example of this is William G. Kaelin Jr., MD, Dana-Farber researcher and Sidney Farber Professor of Medicine (and a good personal friend), who won the 2019 Nobel Prize, jointly with two fellow scientists, for discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability. Findings like this and many others from Dana-Farber’s extraordinary faculty are changing the future of cancer care, and it would not be possible without collaboration—both between doctors and scientists and with you, our philanthropic community.
On behalf of our doctors, researchers, nurses, and most importantly, our patients and their families, thank you for your hard work on and off the golf course to advance the lifesaving mission of Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund.
Sincerely,
Larry Lucchino,
Chairman of the Jimmy Fund, Dana-Farber Trustee, Principal Owner and Chairman of the Pawtucket Red Sox, Boston Red Sox President/CEO Emeritus
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has been the top ranked cancer hospital in New England by U.S. News and World Report for 19 consecutive years, and is ranked in the top 5 nationally for both adult and pediatric cancer programs.
