CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

It was the saddest day when we heard that, on 6 th August, our dear friend and long-time member Jimmy Williamson had passed away. He was 87 years old. Jimmy and his late wife, Phyl, were life-long motorcycling enthusiasts and they had so many riding friends all over South Africa and Zimbabwe. Our deep sympathies go to his daughter Anne Leies and family.

In addition we were further saddened to hear that Brigadier George Thom had also died. We had seen little of George in recent years but many members will recall the VMC Club Night at which George described his experiences flying Mustang fighters in the Korean War and becoming a prisoner-of-war there.

By the time you read this, our Annual General Meeting will have taken place and that a new team will be at the head of the Club’s management.Let’s wish them well and look forward to another busy and successful club year.

Yours in good riding,

MICHAEL MS.

JULY CLUB NIGHTMike Milner-Smyth was back in the Chair and we were all delighted about that. Apologies were recorded from Ric Lewis, Liz Addison, John Allison and Peter Posniak. A new member Ty Krige was welcomed as well as a guest Andries Bekker.

The meeting then followed the usual format and Mike went through the notices. Everyone was reminded of the AGM next month and that there was an urgent need for new Office Bearers and Committee Members to come forward. He had indicated that, for health reasons, he would not be available for re-election so that is an issue which will need urgent attention.

A final appeal was made to secure sponsors for the four remaining months in the 2013 Club Calendar and so ensure continuity for this project. Mike also mentioned that the club was looking for musicians, especially a keyboard player as Andy Stead was forming a VMC band. Interested persons should contact Andy.

The Motorcyclist of the Month Trophy was awarded to Pierre and Gwyneth Cronje for an excellent feat of organization of the CMC 1000 Bike Show which had been a great success.

Steffan Stander then informed the meeting of the forthcoming Magnum Rally and advised that to date there were 31 motorcycles and 21 car entries. The Magnum this year was the SAVVA National Rally. There were

2

still some places for late entries. The run would be around eight hundred kilometres over three days in the Mpumalanga region taking in Pilgrims Rest and surrounds including a stop at God’s Window.

Mike then advised the meeting that in the near future SAVVA Dating would become even more important in light of pending changes to legislation providing for compulsory Roadworthy Testing. Up to date and correctly registered SAVVA Dated vehicles built before 1965 were likely to be exempt from this.

Steve Trehair is to generate Dating Update Forms for member’s bikes shown in the Club Records as SAVVA Dated. This is to enable members to obtain fresh Dating Certificates with the correct registration numbers and present owner’s names. The Club would initially pay the R25.00 fees up front and the member would refund the fee on receipt of the new certificate. It was important to note that the Frame and Engine numbers must correspond with those on the bike’s licence disc.

Pierre Cronje then gave an update on next year’s DJ which was well on track and would be a down run.

Mike then introduced the display bike, a magnificent Excelsior Manxman displayed by Kevin Robertson. He mentioned that there were only 13 Manxmen in South Africa and nine of these were owned by VMC members.

Kevin then gave a detailed history of the bike which had been badly stored in England during the war and was only revisited in 1967. It had been badly neglected during that period and required extensive restoration. When Kevin eventually got the machine he did a complete rebuild and many parts had to be made from scratch. He has had help from many people such as George Corlett, Kevin Walton and others in getting it to where it is today having just won the best bike on display at the 1000 Bike Show. Hearing all the challenges I realized that only someone like Kevin could have achieved this.

The raffle then followed with winning numbers being randomly generated by Steve Trehair’s electronic magic - a far cry from the cloakroom ticket of long ago!

The headcount was 58.

Restoration NewsDoug McLaren writes:

If you are in need of having your petrol tank lined, I highly recommend you contact Tony on 082 605 1243. The firm’s name is Lift Truck Service Hire and he does a great job.

Garth Edwards writes:

Well I have, at last, after numerous months of waiting for the bureaucratic wheels to slowly turn, received all of the final documents to get the two motor cycles that I imported from Belgium registered into my name. I guess the next hurdle will actually be at the licencing department to get them registered. These are the 1928 FN 350 and the 1929 Automoto.

I cannot tell you the frustration in getting these documents from ITAC, NRCS as well as SARS. I do not think I will bring another vehicle into the country. All the while this has been going on, Nedbank have been charging me for the outstanding EOI on a monthly basis. Anyway, now it is time to restore the old girls.

I have now got to the stage in the restoration of my late father’s 1913 two-seater FN that I need to have the radiator restored. Do you perhaps know of anybody who could tackle this project for me, or if not, could you point me in the correct direction?

Apart from the radiator, I only need to get the head lamps restored. I have found a company in the UK called Vintage Headlamp Restoration International. I have sent them the photos of the headlamps, along with sizes etc, and am now just awaiting their reply.

(We presume this is the honeycomb type of radiator. Anyone who can help Garth can contact him on 083 375 4170.)

The SAVVA Dating RecordsBringing them up to date

In view of the impending legislation providing for regular Road Testing of motor vehicles and the related relaxation that will be given to Historic vehicles, we have initiated a program to equip members to qualify for their motorcycles to be exempted.

It is clear that the possession of a SAVVA Dating Certificate that specifies the licenced machine and the name of its registered owner will be the minimum requirement to get this exemption. As so many Dated vehicles have changed hands or have had their licence numbers changed, the SAVVA dating records need to be updated in order that the necessary fresh Dating Certificates can be re-issued.

Steve Trehair has done a great job of generating Dating Update forms for the thousand bikes that members have in our club register and we are also grateful to Ric Lewis for distributing them all. It’s now over to members to get their updated forms in to Roly Tilman for verification. Remember that it is only SAVVA DATED machines that can be updated through this program!

The 2012 Fairest Cape Tour

We have much pleasure in extending an invitation to you to participate in the 2012 Fairest Cape Tour. Entries are now open and will close on the 12th September 2012.

To our friends up -country, we have some scenic and quiet biking roads in the Western Cape that are beyond compare, especially for older bikes - plus you can have a mini holiday in the beautiful Cape at a most reasonable cost. For local riders who have not previously participated in this event you will be enjoying roads you may not have travelled before, in the company of like-minded souls. This is a great recipe for fun and camaraderie.

Note that the cost of entry fees remains the same as last year and accommodation costs will be lower due to us taking the decision to run the event from the Sunday to enjoy the cheaper mid-week rates and to thus encourage additional entries for this year’s event.

We require only documents 3 through to 6 i.e. Entry Form, Financial /Accommodation, Assistance and Drivers Declaration. These can be faxed to the number below or emailed.Documentation is also available on the CVMC website at http://www.cvmc.co.za or can be obtained by mail or email from the event secretary, Eddie Kirkwood at the contacts below. Please respond to this email if you intend participating – the documentation can follow. This will help in estimating our numbers and will be much appreciated.

The Veteran Reliability Trial: We have once again arranged a Veteran event in conjunction with the Fairest Cape Tour. It comes about mainly because of the increase in interest in Veteran machines by CVMC members over the past few years. There is no entry fee for the Reliability Trial for Veteran Machines and entry forms will only be available at the start of the event on 11th November because it is anticipated that there will be more than one rider for some of the machines. The machines must be SAVVA dated and the riders will need to show their driving licences and indemnity documents.

In the meantime please advise me on [email protected] or by phone, (home) 021 851 2339 or (mobile) 084 713 1237 if you are planning to bring a machine or would like to ride one of ours in the event If you wish to be removed from this mailing list, please let us know. If you want to stay on the mailing list for future Fairest Cape Tours, but will not be participating this year, please also reply accordingly. This will be of enormous help to us.

The weather should be stunning in November. We look forward to yourparticipation in the event and would love to see you there. If you have any queries of any sort, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind regardsChris Cutler (Clerk of the Course)email: [email protected]
