Precious Individuals

French Impressionist Claude Monet’s painting, ‘Irises’, has held special significance for me in relation to my vocation in education, for some time.

The white iris amongst a sea of blue irises represents every single, unique

and special individual in our community. In our school every student and staff member is valued, can expect to be ‘safe’ and is loved.

Of course we sometimes fail, but every effort is made to achieve this ideal. Over the years, I have been personally inspired by the positive way that Cornerstone students treat and celebrate others who are different, disabled or disadvantaged, almost without exception.

Our students often hear the message that God loves them, as though they are the white iris. We have this certainty as Christians, but also have the responsibilty of mirroring God’s love in our actions as God works through us.

When relationships are threatened in our community, the consequences can be devastating and we see this from time to time. A focus on restoring relationships (Restorative Practices) is very powerful, fits with our shared values and is a focal point of our Wellbeing practices. We rely on parents (families) to build within their children a ‘moral compass’ to enable students to successfully engage in this process.

For young people to flourish in their learning they must feel safe, empowered and loved – like the white iris!

prayer points• For Year 10s as they spend this week

on Experience.

• For Year 12s as they prepare for their final exams..

• For people and families caught up in the latest shooting tragedy in Texas.

• For the families involved in the Banksia Road primary school tragedy in Sydney.

Each year our College sets aside a Chapel in the first week of November to remember loved ones who students and staff may have lost throughout the course of the year. Held on what is traditionally known as All Saints Day. Cornerstone continues this tradition as a meaningful way for members of our community to acknowledge those who are no longer with us. The following were some words shared last Thursday morning:

When we lose people close to us, there are few things that are more painful. It is in the very nature of death and loss for human beings to grieve, and to grieve deeply,

and when we grieve, the tears run without ceasing and the pain and sorrow is overwhelming.

To those of us who have grieved this year, we wish to offer you words of hope and love drawn from the Scriptures; words drawn from a God who wishes to be with us, in the midst of our grief and loss, and to hold us tightly in our most difficult hour.

We are reminded of a hope that allows us to look beyond death as the last word; rather, new life as God gives it to us through what Jesus has done. We pray the vision and words will bring comfort and strength to any of you who have lost a parent, a grandparent, or any other person close to you.

Following the sharing of verses from the Psalms, students were provided a safe space to paint an image or symbol on a Remembrance Mural on the inbarendi wall. A final blessing was spoken at the close of the chapel.

words of blessingBlessed are the poor in spirit. You are of heaven, and Jesus blesses you. Blessed

are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are they who have

said goodbye to their loved ones, for whom tears are as real as an ocean. Blessed,

God, are those in our school, who have lost much, who have cried plenty. May you give us all what we need to be able

to console, to care, and to cry with them. Amen.

We warmly invite you to meet and engage with our staff and students and see for

yourself how ‘We love, We learn, We grow’.

Word in Our HandsLast week our College hosted a service in inbarendi, to celebrate and commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Christian Reformation.

October, 31 is known as Reformation Day, when a German monk called Martin Luther nailed his ’95 Theses’ to a cathedral door in Wittenberg, Germany. The event set off a revolution that birthed many new Christian Church denominations, including the Lutheran Church and its schools such as Cornerstone College.

The evening included music, drama, and an interactive dialogue that focused on the power of grace that Luther worked to restore as the centre of Christian teaching.

news and eventsStudent Leader Training'Leadership Under Construction' was the theme of the House and College Leader meeting last Tuesday. It was an opportunity to meet fellow leaders and learn how each of our qualities fit together to make a team. The title of the meeting signified that team building is a constant process that takes many different people with a variety of skill sets. It was helpful to hear from outgoing leaders about how to cope with the extra workload, how to organise yourselves and how to communicate with your team. As part of understanding how to give service to the community, each House was assigned a task around the College – planting, weeding, oiling woodwork or recycling. These tasks were designed to show people ways they can benefit the school and to inspire the incoming students for their year of leadership. Lazuli Chittleborough - Year 8 Student

I found that the 'Leadership Under Construction' day was a great opportunity to work with the other leaders in serving the school by doing jobs – oiling the wooden posts in the rain proved to be a great bonding experience. The wisdom that was passed on from the outgoing leaders gave me some ideas as to how I would like to spend my last year at Cornerstone and in serving this community with other students.Olivia Paim Bruges - Year 11 Student

On Tuesday, my fellow House Leaders and I got together to talk and learn about leadership. This was an incredible opportunity to experience and really opened our eyes. I was also lucky enough to be able to bond with my House Leader team. We had the opportunity to serve the community by helping at the recycling shed for an hour. This was an eye opening experience as neither I, nor my team knew of the sheer overwhelming amount of rubbish that goes into the recycling bins. It made me really passionate about recycling.Maddy Nyp - Year 8 Student

Inter-House ChallengeOn Wednesday, 1 November we began a lunchtime Inter-House sport competition to allow students to earn House points by participating in a range of lunchtime activities.

Last week approximately 50 senior school students joined us in inbarendi for a round robin Volleyball tournament. Each House was very well represented and particular students showed off some impressive skills. It was a great atmosphere with the tunes pumping and some roving commentary by Jagger Davis-Mattner and Duncan Rogers. Moorak won two games and walked away with the win after a countback of participants. Aroona also won two games and finished second while Battunga finished third and Naturi in fourth.

This week we invite the Middle School students down to inbarendi to show off their Volleyball skills before the competition is wrapped up in Week 6 with the Gladiator Challenge. Stay tuned.

Year 10 Knockout BasketballOn Monday, 23 August, our Year 10 boys Knockout Basketball team played Cabra College in the second round of the competition at Cabra.

After winning both their games in round one, the boys went into the contest confident and ready to play. Unfortunately that didn’t translate on the court, as Cabra came out strong in the 1st quarter, shaking us up a little. They got out to a big lead and used their large rotation to keep pushing the pace.

The 2nd quarter was much the same, and we just weren’t able to find our game that was so successful in the first round.

In the 3rd quarter we made some changes that started turning the tide for us, giving our boys the confidence to knock down some shots and score in transition.

Our defence in this quarter was the biggest factor, as we held Cabra to only 5 points. At the start of the 4th quarter we were within 8 points, but we just weren’t able to get any closer.

Cabra was an extremely good team, with many District and State representatives, so to have played as well as we did, and finish the game 52-40, made us proud of the boys and how they played. It was a great showing for Cornerstone basketball, and every one of the boys should be extremely proud of themselves.

Well done to Oscar Ladd, Tom Glover, Joel Parker-Boers, Lachlan Warhurst, Michael Christian, Jack Schoell, Cooper Hough, Daniel Kupczynski, Liam Fitzgerald and Tom Harvey.

Food and Fun FestWhat a wonderful night the Food & Fun Fest was last week.

Families, Old Collegians and friends of Cornerstone came together for a night of fun and frivolity.

The evening featured scrumptious food prepared by the PT&F, a twilight market with everything from beauty products to artisan chopping boards, olive oil, home grown produce and pomegranate products, fashion, jewellery, sweets, cards, preloved bric-a-brac, Christmas angels and so much more.

The program of entertainment included a showcase of toe tapping brilliance, a student led fashion parade, dance moves by One50, a magician, face painting, games and even a Bollywood flash mob!

inbarendi was also abuzz during the evening with students chilling to the groovy sound of DJ Justin on the mezzanine floor, while bubble soccer and archery attack were in full swing below.

Thank you to:• Tom Johnson and Joel Baron, Master of

Ceremonies• Our very generous Silent Auction donors• Rotary Club, Mount Barker• Freshford Nursery• TAG face paints• The Parents', Teachers' & Friends'

important exam information

Year 10 and 11 ExamsIn our last edition of connections, I wrote about the importance of good study habits for our Year 12s as they prepare for their exams and final assessments.

Our Year 10 and 11 exams are only a few weeks away and students too should be putting some routines in place if they haven’t already. Students received a printed copy of their exam timetable last Friday during Home Group, but a copy can be accessed here.

Students need to check the dates carefully, as they vary between year levels. Year 10 students are expected to be on campus full time. Programmed lessons in other subjects will be operating if an exam is not scheduled. Year 11 students are only required to be at school for the actual exam times.

Students are encouraged to set out an exam study plan. For subjects that have exams, teachers will provide guidelines to the structure of their particular exam and information on the content that students need to study. They also may provide revision sheets or past exams for practising.

Further assistance with planning for exams can also be sought from our Learning Team.

Please contact either Ms Richards (Senior School Learning Leader) or Mr Doyle (Acting Learning Director) for further assistance.

2018 Year 11 Career Awareness & Workplace LearningThis year we undertook an exciting new initiative for Year 11 students, to assist them with their career planning and awareness. This proved to be very successful so will happen again in 2018.

An outline of potential scheduling is provided below:• Week 5, Term 2 - A Career & Curriculum Focus Day

• Week 9, Term 2 - Industry & Tertiary Study Excursions

• Week 10, Term 2 (Monday, 2 July - Thursday, 5 July) - Workplace Learning (optional)

The inclusion of the Career & Curriculum Focus Day and the Industry & Tertiary Study Excursions will allow students to experience greater exposure to a wider variety of career paths, training providers, employers, as well as Universities and other tertiary institutions.

Being able to visit these organisations, see their facilities and speak to specific and relevant people will be invaluable. We hope that this will also help cater for those students who have struggled to find meaningful work placement in their chosen area of interest, due to confidentiality reasons or employers who simply do not have the time to support our students in this way.

Despite Workplace Learning in 2018 being an optional activity for Year 11 students, they are still encouraged to participate to enhance their understanding of work in industry and location of preference for the future.

Those who wish to take advantage of this learning experience are encouraged to begin planning now as some of the more popular organisations may already be taking applications for next year.

Further information about these opportunities will be communicated to students and parents at the Year 11 Information Evening at the beginning of 2018.

Youth at the Zoo (YATZ) program for students interested in conservation work with animals and wildlife throughout 2018 was recently advertised to all Year 9,10,11 students via email. Applications are due Friday, 15 November.

SchoolTVSchoolTV is an online wellbeing resource for parents. Each month SchoolTV will explore a range of different topics that are impacting on youth today. Click the icon above or visit Charis to see all newsletters. This month on SchoolTV - School Transitions

Whether it is starting school for the first time, moving up to a higher grade or embarking on a journey through secondary school, there is no doubt that any school transition is a very exciting time for children and parents. It means your children are growing up!

However, transitioning is an ongoing process. It can continue long after students have entered their new environment and may encounter difficulties at a number of different stages. These stressors may appear as anxiety and frustration and result in negative or disruptive behaviours. Such behaviours can become problematic making the transitioning process even more difficult for children and parents.

In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn practical strategies to assist your child during the transition process and reduce stress and anxiety levels. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month's edition and we always welcome your feedback.

If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information.

INTERTEXTUAL STUDY CORPSE IN THE BATHROOM

In the bathroom there he lay: Our brother, like fallen soldiers before, Where he met his ultimate dismay He lay there dead upon the floor. The bloody mess of the scene: His body sprawled across the ceramic, These tiles are now unclean. No longer do we watch in panic. The intricacies of life’s woven web Laid out in front of our eyes. Our brother we’ll put to bed On leaves and twigs and vines. But wait! The assailant returns, With rolled baton in hand. It is up to us to discern What next is part of his plan.

We will certainly not let this happen, Can’t have this again be our fate. We watch the water, like satin, As it moves and turns in place. The heat of the lights is burning But too often we shy away. Today is the overturning, Right now, today is the day. Brothers in arms we stand United against your killer. We will beat this man, Get ready, this will be a thriller. Weapon in hand, He aims for your corpse, In his way we stand, And his middle warps.

He runs. He flees! He’s gone. We’re free! But wait, there’s more, He’s back again. This is war. Stand strong my men. With gas in hand he enters now, He aims right for my face. He fires and lands it on my brow, All I can do is brace. I can no longer view our world around, The clarity I knew diminishes fast. The light is flickering above with sound, Like crackling skeletons from the past. My legs contract to my chest And my eyes, now shutting, stop. I’m sorry brother we did our best, I suppose we won’t reach the top. Together here we lay, I will stay with my brother till dawn. One day all those people will pay And together you all will mourn. As the dust mites feed on our hair, I lay crippled, always a fighter. Unfortunately this death is not rare - This is the inevitable end of a spider.

SAETA Spring Poetry FestivalThis year, Sarah Longo (Year 11) submitted her poem ‘Bathroom Battle’ for consideration for the South Australian English Teachers Association Spring Poetry Festival. Sarah’s poem was selected for publication in the 2017 edition. She was also awarded the Walter Welburn Prize for best poem by a student from a ‘country’ school, which comes with a $50 cash prize. EFM Health and Fitness Tips: Myth buster “Carbohydrates make you fat!” An over-consumption of dietary fat or calories in general will make you fat. A gram of fat contains 9 calories and is much less filling than carbs (esp low GI carbs), which only contain 4 calories per gram.

If your goal is to lose body fat (not ‘weight’ remember…!), endeavour to base your diet around low GI carbs. These are very filling, thus helping you consume less calories overall.

And if your goal is to put on size (muscle), you can afford to eat higher GI carbs (i.e more sugary foods), as your body will need substantially more calories overall in order to grow, and you may not be able to get enough by just eating low GI, ‘complex’ carbs. A great side effect of muscle building! Remember, carbs (such as rice, potatoes, grains and pasta) have been humankind’s staple foods for centuries.

What’s making us fat today is simply too much energy. To lose fat, reduce your intake of fatty foods. But don’t shut down your metabolism by shunning those good hard-working carbs!
