NEWSLETTER FROM THE HEAD PREFECT Dear College Community Having commenced at the College in 2003 as a timid Reception student, awestruck by the expanse of our grounds and the many unfamiliar faces, I quickly developed a sense of pride in our school. My love for Rostrevor grew fonder with each passing year, and by the time I swapped my school shorts for trousers, and commenced my secondary education, I had set myself the goal of leading the school as a Prefect. Now, as Term 2 draws to a close, it has dawned on me that only one full term remains in my Rostrevor College journey, and that within a few short months, I will have to bid farewell to the family that has nurtured me for 13 of my 18 years. Looking back on the past 13 years, I have come to appreciate the many opportunities that the school has provided me with, and I am confident that without such opportunities that encouraged me to expand my knowledge and operate outside the parameters of my comfort zone, I would not be the person I am today. For this, I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the dedicated and passionate staff of Rostrevor, as well as my friends and classmates. However, my transformation from a shy boy to a confident young man would not have occurred if I didn’t make the most of these opportunities, and it is this message that I wish to share with our school community. Each edition of our fortnightly newsletter highlights the various activities on offer here at Rostrevor College, with this publication being no exception. The members of the Prefect body have worked tirelessly this term to provide services such as the Smart Work Sessions and Buddy Class mentors, as well as facilitate activities and fundraisers such as Blue Week. However, these services and activities are merely the tip of the iceberg that is Rostrevor, as our school offers a countless number of opportunities, ranging from homework clubs, to co- curricular activities, to overseas immersions and social justice endeavours. My advice to the younger members of our community is take every opportunity presented to you, because I assure you that when only one term remains of your journey, you will regret the opportunities you did not take, and cherish those that you did. To my fellow Year 12’s, I encourage you to relish our limited time at this great College, as I am oſten told that our schooling years account for the best years of lives. Maintain a balance between study and leisure, and draw confidence and determination from the fact that we only have 11 weeks of lessons leſt. In the words of Art Williams, “it’s not going to be easy, but I promise that it will be worth it.” I wish you all a happy and safe term break, and look forward to working with you all again next term. the rostrevor community would be aware that mr Simon Dash is in his fifth year as Principal of rostrevor College and has recently been appraised, as is the case for all ereA Principals, and we would like to thank the rostrevor community for their input to this review. over 250 rostrevor community members contributed to the electronic survey which delivered a comprehensive set of survey results. We would particularly like to thank the large number of parents and staff who took up the offer to contribute to this survey. the survey was followed up by individual interviews with a range of staff, parents, students and Board members. these interviews took place over two days and were conducted by a panel of four senior leaders from ereA and Catholic education SA.

on behalf of the rostrevor Board and edmund rice education Australia, we would like to congratulate mr Dash on his successful appraisal, which commended him in particular for his leadership in the educational and religious & Spiritual domains. It became clear that the community felt that he has a desire to ensure that rostrevor is a genuinely inclusive ereA school that holds dear to its core values as expressed in the ereA Charter touchstones. he also emphasises the importance of what happens in the classroom, particularly in regard to differentiation of the curriculum. the Board has previously noted and it is certainly worth reminding our community of the improved Year 12 results in recent years.

As with all appraisals, there are areas of commendation and areas for improvement. mr Dash was grateful for the feedback he received, all of which he will take on board. In his follow up discussions with us, he has reaffirmed his commitment to rostrevor College. We congratulate him for his successful review and thank him for the extremely hard work he has put in since joining our community. We in turn will continue our support to him and the College and wish him well for his future leadership at rostrevor College.

At the end of Week 7, the prefect body travelled to our sister school, Loreto College, to join in the festivities of ‘Pink Day’. the day is an annual occurrence and aims to raise awareness for breast cancer, the most common cancer found in Australian women. the rostrevor prefects relished the opportunity to visit Loreto. Dressed up in their best pink outfits, the boys assisted in cooking the barbecue and making fairy floss, along with other activities.

As representatives of our College, we thought that it was important to show our support for such a cause, as breast cancer has significantly impacted the lives of many in the rostrevor community. the occasion also demonstrated the great relationship we have built with Loreto, and the importance of supporting our relationships with other schools.

In other news, as the first semester draws to a close, there has been an abundance of activities occurring throughout the school. the Year 9 students recently went on camps including hiking, mountain biking and kayaking, whilst the Year 10’s and 11’s completed their exams.

there is also exciting news with the 2016 Indian Pilgrimage team soon to be announced. It has been great to see everyone making the most of the opportunities that the school has to offer, and we hope that this will continue into the second half of the year.

deputy head prefect fundraising

the first term only saw one fundraising initiative; the selling of soft drink cans during recess and lunch when the weather was favourable. however now as we enter into the winter season, I have organised a weekly fundraising initiative each tuesday morning for term 3. thursday of Week 9 and 10 of term 2 saw the start of that initiative with a hot milo and coffee stall run by the Prefects in the morning. Next term I have planned for a similar weekly fundraising initiative with the involvement of not only a weekly hot milo and coffee, but also another selection such as pancakes. this year the prefects are again supporting the edmund rice Camps as our chosen charity. All proceeds from these fundraising initiatives will be donated to the chosen charity. term 3 will also see a barbeque during the World Cup Soccer tournament and a casual tie day.

If you have a proposal for a fundraising idea please contact myself. each week there will be something in the notices in terms of fundraisers so keep an eye out.

Due to the success of previous ‘futsal’ tournaments, the 2015 Prefect Body will be holding their own in term 3 of this year. All middle and Senior Year students will be eligible to create their own team consisting of their friends and classmates. typically five-a-side, these teams will play against each other in a tournament early next term. Conducting such an activity allows students to compete with their peers outside of house-oriented contests such as sports and swimming carnivals, and consequently promotes positive competition and a friendly rivalry within the school atmosphere.

In an email sent previously, students were asked to nominate their team members, which also featured a personalised team name. Students should also submit their year level, so as to ensure there is a competitive balance between teams. It would be unreasonable to suggest a Year 7 team competing against a Year 12 team! In addition, all players are asked to contribute a one-off gold coin donation per head, for which all proceeds will go towards, edmund rice Camps. this worthy cause can use donations to benefit those partaking in the camps, so I implore all those with a passion for the sport, or those interested in friendly competition to create a team and get involved.

If you are interested, please email your team players, team name and year level of each player as soon as possible to marlon Shepherdson at [email protected] to be entered in the competition! (only one email is required per team.) more information will be sent out over the holidays and early next term. If you have any inquiries please do not hesitate to see myself or email me at the aforementioned email address.

Best of luck to all those involved in the competition!

Marlon Shepherdson.

BOarding

A lot has happened this term within Duggan house and the boarding community. In Week 5 we had the Boarders’ high tea, which was based around the theme of National reconciliation Week. We had special guest Paul Vandenbergh from the Port Adelaide indigenous academy, who was accompanied by Patrick ryder and Karl Amon, Indigenous players at Port Adelaide Football Club. this was a great experience for the boys as they got to hear footy stories from the players and how National reconciliation Week affects and relates to them.

throughout this term davin Ferreira also made his league debut on the 14th of June against Sturt Football club at Unley oval. Davin kicked three goals and got third best for Norwood. Davin also racked up an impressive 18 disposals for the game.

Brad McCarthy and darcy Fogarty have also been selected to play in the U16’s state team in the following weeks, this is a great achievement as it is consecutive years of playing state football for South Australia as they played U15’s last year. Both boys have a very bright future ahead in their AFL careers.

on the 21st of June the rostrevor boarders invited the Loreto boarders over for a Sunday night mass and dinner afterwards. this was good for the new boys to meet some new people and for old friends to catch up. this was an enjoyable night as kids socialized, caught up with friends and played some games of pool and table tennis.

Year 10 and 11 boys completed their exams with confidence and are hoping to receive some positive feedback and are looking forward to coming back in term 3 and enjoy the boarding spirit.

In week 7, the Prefect body raised money for Beyondblue as well as awareness for the mental health of men in Australia. the Prefect body was supported by the school counselling services, as well as staff members in this initiative, which was the first of its kind at rostrevor College. Dubbed ‘Blue Week’, the Prefect body held various fundraising events throughout the week, coupling this with presentations made to each house regarding depression and mental illness. Presentations were made during house gatherings throughout the week and aimed to explain the breadth of diagnosable mental illnesses, as well as reveal statistics about mental health, depression amongst men, and suicide amongst men. Importantly however, the presentations also gave students resources which can be useful in battling or coping with mental illnesses. these resources included:

•headspace: http://www.headspace.org.au/

•Beyond Blue: http://www.youthbeyondblue.com/

•reach out: http://au.reachout.com/

•KIDS heLPLINe: 1800 55 1800

•LIFeLINe: 13 11 14

•rostrevor counselling service: [email protected]

there was a large amount of emphasis placed upon students to understand that there is a sense of camaraderie amongst the rostrevor community and that help will always be around for those who are struggling. As aforementioned, various fundraising events were held to raise money for Beyondblue. I am pleased to announce from these initiatives, the Prefects raised $1,806.68. the Prefects reached this total by holding a BBQ with blue fairy floss on Wednesday, hosting a netball match between the Loreto College Prefects and the rostrevor College Prefects (rostrevor prevailing in a convincing win, 16-8) during thursday lunch and finally a ‘blue’ casual day on Friday. on the Friday, students were asked to write a message of support to someone suffering depression. this movement was quite powerful and a fitting way to summate, hopefully, the first of many Blue Weeks.

It is my pleasure to announce that I am the representative for rostrevor College, as part of the Campbelltown Councils Youth Advisory Committee. this is a relationship, which we pride here at the College and presents an opportunity to have a voice amongst issues which are relevant in our community. the Campbelltown City Council Youth Advisory offers a platform for young people to discuss youth issues, make recommendations for positive change, initiate new projects and develop events for local young people. YAC members meet each month and aim to represent the needs, views and aspirations of local young people. I encourage any student who is thinking of joining the YAC committee to do so and reap the benefits of getting involved with other students from our local area and also people in the work force. If you wish to enquire about joining, feel free to see ms Caruana or myself for information.

the current Prefect body is proud to announce that we have continued the long-standing tradition of providing assistance to those who attend Smart Work Sessions. We as Prefects, have decided to make it a point to attend every session held this year, so as to forge a relationship with all students, especially those in the younger year levels. one of our main aims as a group, is to build a strong relationship with our peers and teachers, and the Smart Works Sessions have enabled us to achieve this goal.

thus far, participation has been extremely strong and in conjunction with the staff at the Learning Centre, we have designated two days per week to offer specialised assistance to those students undertaking the research project – an arduous and demanding subject.

All members of the Prefect group have completed the research project and are willing to assist those in need of some guidance. We urge each and every student in need of assistance with the research Project, to attend our sessions, which are held every monday and Wednesday.

Furthermore, we would also like to take this opportunity to thank the staff in the Learning Centre for their support and assistance. We understand that the staff take time out of their own personal lives to stay behind after school and offer help to students. Without your co-operation, these sessions would not function as efficiently as they do.

Finally, on behalf of the Prefects of 2015, we would like to once again remind students to approach us, whether it may be for any assistance, or even just for a friendly chat.

We are here for you.

this year in Social Justice the focus has been on violence against women and the respect men should have towards their female counterparts. We kicked off the year with our campaign ‘real Good men’, boys were asked to write a message of thanks to an important woman in their lives for all the good things they do for them. I feel it is necessary to highlight the importance of women in our lives as they guide us everyday, be it from teachers at school to mothers or sisters they are a necessity and shouldn’t be taken for granted. this will culminate in White ribbon Day, where we will celebrate this as a College and hopefully the message will be taken on board.

We have also highlighted the importance of fair trade in our community. We have made a conscious effort to start using these fair trade products within the College. For Fair trade fortnight on the two Wednesdays we sold fair trade hot chocolate as a way to inform the College about the active approach we are taking on the matter. to kick off next term, in Week 3 the World XI vs 1st XI soccer match will take place. this is a prime opportunity to highlight the cultural diversity we have within the school and how it is present throughout all sports. A boot drive also took place to collect boots for refugees that attend the Friday night hang out at Build the Bridge.

Frequent meetings with the Loreto Prefects have also taken place this year to ensure we collaborate as often as possible with our beloved sister school. Some exciting developments are on the way. the Social Justice team will continue to work hard throughout the remainder of the year to raise awareness on the important issues that face us, in the hope that we make a difference.

there was a decidedly chilly atmosphere at Adelaide oval on the night of Saturday June 20 – for ‘Winter’ had arrived. Not for long however, when over 200 staff, friends and parents warmed up the room with their good cheer and hot dance moves to the tunes of motown Connection!

After being wined and dined with exquisite fare, the mercury really fired up with the live auction, with a prosciutto leg, Clipsal ‘hot’ Laps, signed cricket bat and more – a bidding frenzy ensued. the generosity of our sponsors and community was humbling (with rostrevor College Cricket being the final home for the treasured Phil hughes signed cricket bat) and at last count we have raised over $27,000! the funds will be made available to the College wishlist distributed by the Parents and Friends.

A big thank you to the rostrevor Foundation for kindly donating the black Piaggio scooter for the raffle, which was drawn on the night. We are thrilled with the result and we would like to thank everyone who contributed to make the 2015 Winter Ball such a success.

stranger dangerstudents and families are reminded to be wary of approaches from strangers, especially when they are unaccompanied or travelling to and from school. if they are approached, students should not respond and should not accept offers of rides or gifts.

students should seek the assistance of other nearby adults if they feel unsafe and should report the event to a trusted adult (parent or school staff member) as soon as possible.

sAPoL advises that taking out a mobile phone and calling police can deter the offender and they recommend the student making a formal report to their closest police station.

cO-curricular news

All programs have been provided to coaches and are available on the rostrevor College website, along with weekly maps that will be updated by Wednesday of the week your son is playing at an away venue.

term 3 fixtures will be added to the website this week as we head towards the traditional Inter-Collegiate match-up with Sacred heart in Week 2 August 1st.

1st XVIII Football

1st 2nd 3rd 4th

RC 2 - 3 5 - 9 6 - 9 7 - 11 (53)

Best Players: J Grant, D Pisani, K Ward, C Ball, G hutchinson, J richards

Goal Kickers: J Anderson 3 goals, A Davies, m Coombes, G hutchinson, m Short 1 each

the 1st XVIII travelled to St michael’s in the second of their state knockout matches and were again without a number of boys who were called up for state duties. With the sun shining, the lads started in great fashion, hunting the ball in packs, putting the opposition under good pressure and using the ball well. alex davies was sensational early and his work rate and tackling pressure on the ball carrier was eventually rewarded as he got onto the end of a series of handballs to kick the opening goal. the first half continued to be a tight contest with rostrevor winning the clearances, maintaining strong tackling pressure and producing many more forward entries than the home side. Despite having 14 scoring shots to 7, inaccuracy in front of goal meant that the game was still in the balance at the midway point. Coach Glen malkin highlighted at half time that a more direct game style was needed and players were encouraged to just take possession and use the first option.

In the third quarter St michael’s gained momentum and kicked back to back goals to edge in front and the rostrevor senior players were unable to shut the game down. We needed to take possession, slow the game down and keep possession to break St michael’s momentum but not enough smart football was played when the pressure was on. the last quarter was played

Jeff Fischer Co-ordinator of Co-curricular Activities

as a tough encounter, but instead of having the confidence to take the game on with fast ball movement, we played “stop start” footy trying not to make mistakes. Unfortunately this style of football was not good enough to get over the line.

junior Grant has had a great month of footy and his confidence has seen him grow and be a real impact player for the side. his defensive marks across half back and run out of defence made him our best player on the day. darcy Pisani got plenty of the ball around the middle of the ground and was very influential at stoppages. Kurtis Ward played a great four quarter game on the ball and one of the few that were barking instructions and encouragement as the game started to slip away. Cameron Ball in his first XVIII debut was excellent and improved in confidence as the game progressed. he attacked the contest with confidence and was really clean with his possession below his knees and didn’t panic under pressure. Guy Hutchinson was solid and effective in his role as an on-baller, getting a number of effective clearances and moving the ball forward quickly. josh richards did something positive every time he got the ball giving the ball to a team mate in a better position and his decision making is excellent around the ground and could be a more damaging player if he takes his opportunities in front of goal.
