From the Chaplain…

My husband and I have just seen the acclaimed movie, Hidden Figures, which has been nominated for the Best Picture Oscar Award. This is a movie I highly recommend you see! When it is out on DVD, I will urge that we show it at your campus! Hidden Figures is taken from the book by the same name which tells the true story of 3 African American women mathematicians who were employed by NASA during the race between the US and Russia to send a man into space. The first American astronauts were all white men, as were the members of the elite Space Task Force. However, they were supported by a group of black women who served as human computers, working on math computations by hand. These “hidden figures” were segregated in a separate building. It was one of these women, Katherine Johnson, who calculated the trajectory for Alan Shepard’s flight in 1961. And when John Glenn was to go into space as the first person to orbit the earth, he requested that Johnson personally check the calculations before his flight. In 2015, the President awarded Katherine Johnson the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest award. My friend Laurie Haller pointed out that this movie gives all kind of wisdom, and she is right. The wisdom of this movie points to important issues we struggle with everyday: God calls each of us to encourage the gifts of others! Who knows what Katherine’s life and the world would be like if her gifts had not been nurtured? Who could God be calling you to make full use of their God-given potential? Perhaps a friend or neighbor, or perhaps your grandchild or great grandchild? Sometimes God calls each of us to admit in our own hearts that we know hidden people –people who we have kept at a distance because they are different from ourselves. Your gift may be to help them not be hidden anymore! As your Chaplain I firmly believe that God hopes we will see every person in the world, (and definitely on our campus) as a child of God – not as a nobody or a loser. God is delighted when we celebrate our own belovedness- and lets that lead us to celebrate each other! Who do you know that needs to be reminded that they are loved by God? Let me the first to remind you today how beloved you are by God! Now – don’t “hide your light under a bushel!” Find a hidden person and tell them the same thing!

PORTER HILLS VILLAGE NEWS MARCH IS NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH

Dale Simmons, Director of Dining Services We are happy to announce that the last week of March we will be teaming up with General Mills to hold a week’s worth of fun activities called Bee Happy Bee Healthy, culminating on Friday with games, a photo booth to get your picture taken with the General Mills Bee mascot, and a great dessert buffet. Look for our Executive Chef, Kris Stunkard, to do a health cooking demo during the week. We will have someone from General Mills here to do a Bee discussion with fresh honey and warm biscuits during the week. So please watch your Villager calendar for these and other fun activities throughout the week.

YOUTUBE PC Technician Youtube is a website that allows people from all over the world to upload and share videos. You can find everything from how to repair your airplane to thousands of funny pet videos. Simply go to youtube.com, and at the top of the website there is a search bar where you can enter what you would like to see. The website is free to view but there are advertisements at the beginning of most videos. That is how they keep the site free. I have a few recommendations for hours of entertainment. Try searching “Funny Cat Videos” and be entertained for hours. Seriously, there are over 23 million videos in that category. Do you want to entertain your cat? Try searching “bird watching for cats,” and you will find 474,000 videos for your cat to watch. They really do work, my son’s cat loves to watch them. Not a cat person? Change it up to Funny dog videos. There are 22 million funny dog videos and 247,000 videos of “dogs chasing cats.” Want to learn something practical, try typing in “how to fix my golf swing,” and you’ll find 51,400 videos of people who think they can help. How to quilt brings up 573,000 results. Whatever your interests, you are bound to find something entertaining. Just remember the site is free and sometimes the advice is only worth what you paid for it.

NEW 2017: One-on-One Exercise We continue to have a wonderful response with our One-on-One exercise program guided by our GVSU Intern, RJ!
