From the Editor’s Desk Dad never understood the connection I had with my dogs. He viewed canine companions as walking buddies, cheap security and useful tools for cleaning up leftovers. Though I tried throughout my life to explain how important my dogs were to me, I was never able to get him to fully understand my obsession. A few months before Dad passed, Will and I performed our tricks and freestyle routines to an eager and appreciative audience at his nursing home, he remained unmoved and unimpressed. But whether he liked to admit it or not, I got my love for furry four legged friends from him. Growing up we would sit for hours watching nature shows, dog shows and any dog agility event available on the channels we got. He loved pointing out the border collies and telling me how smart they were. Though my passion was a mystery to him, it didn’t matter. He was a good father, a fabulous grandfather and loved nothing more than chuckling over funny stories and telling us the latest animal or hockey trivia he’d learned. Near the end, when he started throwing pieces of his dinner to the ground beside him, and chuckling at what he alone could see, the aids thought he’d lost his marbles completely, but I knew what he was doing. When dad came to visit, it was Jimmy, the little Sheltie, that followed dad around the yard, digging holes where instructed, fetching sticks and barking on command. And when dad stopped to take his tea, muffin and forty winks under the old cedar tree, it was Jimmy who’d sit beside him waiting for any handouts. Dad never believed in feeding dogs human food and was quite vocal if the kids or I fed the dogs from our hands. But, when no one was around to see and on special occasions, Dad would throw pieces of muffin on the ground for Jimmy and laugh at a joke only he and the dog understood. Yep, he may not have understood how much I love dogs, but then maybe I didn’t understand how much he did either and how much he looked forward to seeing Jimmy again! SEPTEMBER 2014

NKC Members Take Westminster Seriously!!!

!.

WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB – FEBRUARY 10 AND 11, 2014 We had two fun and successful nights at the Harewood Pub watching the 2014 Westminster Dog show in New York. The show was as usual, very entertaining and we saw some wonderful dogs from all groups and people were encouraged to pick their dogs in the groups to win - of course everyone had a favorite. Lots of winners and lots of prizes to be had. Thanks to Cheryl and Nigel Patterson for their generous donations of wonderful prizes for our draws. They really loaded us up and we had lots of prizes for two nights to share and hand out when “your number was drawn” We truly appreciate their support and it was great to see them attend and enjoy the show with us on the Monday night. Also thanks also to Harewood Arms Pub and members of the NKC who brought great prizes to add to the mix, we had some real winners in there, and they were fought over enthusiastically. This year we had a “Best - Best in Show Handling Outfit”

which was won by Jodie Justice and her wee doggy friend. Sherry Drebnicki looked smashing in a retro outfit complete with a dog comb in her hair and very fashionable eye shadow. It was fun and hopefully we can carry it on to next year. Of course the prize for our winner was a gift certificate to Value Village. The pub put up great meals for the two nights and everyone dug in and enjoyed themselves. They even set up up with an array of free appys on Tuesday night, very nice, thank you Harewood Pub. The winner was (drum roll please) a Wire Haired Fox Terrier (yah Terrier’s) named Sky and he strutted his stuff and took command in the ring in true terrier fashion. Would you say I am a bit biased about terriers? We can now look forward to next year’s show. !Sandi Malcolm

Presidents Message

I hope the summer has been good to all of you and your dogs, and that you had plenty of opportunity to get out and do what you love to do with your dogs. There were many trials and events all over the island and elsewhere, and I hope to read some of your brags from this summer  further in the pages of our newsletter.  Fall is back to school- although maybe not this year for the kids, but for our club classes start back the week of September 8, thank you to all the volunteers who make this happen, I know I enjoy taking a class or two as it seems to be about the only time I get to work with my dogs. We have some rally obedience trials, both AIOC and CARO coming up as well as other events later in the fall. We had a blast at VIEX, thank you to all the participants and especially the organizers, a great time to showcase what our club is about to the public.  We are hoping to make meetings shorter , with reports being presented in written format, so the only items we have to discuss are matters that need a decision, and with a presentation to stimulate interest, we can hopefully get more members out to meetings- remember our meetings are a great time to socialize as well, and by keeping  the meeting to a minimum, we can have more socializing time. We hope to see you at the next meeting, as always, the  fourth Monday of the month as with our current bylaws, we need a quorum to make decisions, we need member participation, so please, come out and support YOUR club.   Carole Ann Grayson

MORE PROUD DOG FRIENDS! TRY NOT TO SAY AWWWW! SEPTEMBER 2014

BOSS CH Pomland Pillow Talk CGN aka "Missy", NKC Show Dog of the Year 2009 Dewayne Ward went to the American Pomeranian Club National Specialty in Louisville, Kentucky, with our 8 year old Diva...Miss Missy.... and she showed all the Boys... and all the Girls... who the real Diva is!!  The only thing missing that would have made the wins perfect would have been if I could have been there!  Missy had quite the cheering section and the more they cheered...the more this Diva showed! There was a total entry of well over 400 pomeranians at this Specialty, and Missy had to beat some gorgeous and big winning Veterans in the biggest Veteran Class ever!  The next day Missy was also awarded Best of Opposite Veteran and won the blue ribbon in the Open Class with an entry of 108!!!  Way to go Missy!

Hi Beth, you may or may not want to publish these ones..........our German Shepherd Ivan von Hodenhof alias “Ivan” who did take a couple of NKC classes many years ago......he’ll be 10 years old in April and is a certified St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog (brag, brag)  and visits with the elderly and is involved with the “Paws 4 Stories” program with SJA and of course Golden Retriever (lovingly known as the blonde idiot) Tashora’s To Be or Not To Be alias “Tobe” who has been doing classes for the last 3 years and really wants to be an SJA Therapy dog, or is it me that wants him to be a TD ( a bunch of both I guess).  Ivan is tucked in behind.

Here is my girl Nita.  She has taken matters into her own paws re barn hunts and has started organising them here for herself and Lego. I am very pleased with this and hope she keeps up the good work!

Special Announcement by Carol

I have a couple more announcements to make in the next newsletter and that's Jan with Angel and myself with Marcus and Brodie attended the SDDA DOT's on the 30th of March in Victoria. Angel and Marcus rec'd one pass each.  We need to read our dogs better.  Brodie passed all three Detection Odour Tests.   He is a very hard dog to read, but when he detects the odour, he gives me a perfect show stack.  Go figure. Submitted by Carole Walker
