I hope you had a great week. Have a blessed week, FROM THE DESK OF MARION FIKANY October 11, 2020 Greetings from the Business Office Happily, school is back in session. I can hear the children on the playground outside my window as I write this. I commend the teachers and school administration for working so hard over the summer to have safety protocols in place so St. Clare’s students can learn and socialize together. I bid the St. Clare Nursery School Co-Op farewell and wish them a successful collaboration with the Sunny Days Co-Op in Grosse Pointe Woods. We are reengaged this season with run club and volleyball. In addition to updating equipment and uniforms we were able to complete a few projects. We now have security cameras installed on all entrances of the Sweeney Center and in the gymnasium. This action was not taken due to any incidents but rather because we have so much activity. The gym floor, as we do every year, was re-coated. We did extensive gardening work outside the Sweeney Center with tree trimming still to be completed.” In spite of the difficult Spring we encountered, I am pleased to report the 2019/2020 fiscal year ended with a net surplus. Many thanks to the organizers of Oktoberfest, the school auction, and fundraisers in between. These successful events help offset the decrease in the Sunday offertory while we were not able to come to Mass in our beautiful church. We appreciate all the parishioners who mailed in envelopes during that time and those who gave “make up” contributions for the times missed. St. Clare is up to about 100 offertory envelopes submitted per week and online collections have doubled since the beginning of Spring. For those online donors please let Jozefa know if you would no longer like to receive printed envelopes. Please keep in mind there are parish costs associated with most ways of giving. Printing of envelopes and online transfer charges are incurred. The most costly are the online credit card donations. SAINTS OF THE WEEK

• Thursday 10/15 – St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582)

was a Spanish noblewoman who felt called to

become a Carmelite nun. She was the

prominent Spanish mystic, religious reformer,

author, and as a Continued on page 2

theologian she earned the rare distinction of being

declared a Doctor of the Church.

• Saturday 10/17 - Since I was baptized at St. Ignatius

in Detroit I would like to highlight this saint of

Antioch whose feast day is at the end of this week

on the 17th. In 107, during the reign of the brutal

Emperor Trajan, this holy Bishop was sentenced to

death because he refused to renounce the

Christian faith. He was taken under guard to Rome

where he was brutally devoured by wild beasts in a

public spectacle. He was disciple of the beloved

Disciple John and was consecrated Bishop by the

Apostle Peter, the first Pope. He wrote letters of

encouragement, instruction and inspiration to

Christians in Asia Minor and Greece. In these

letters, it was Bishop Ignatius who first used the term

"catholic" to describe the whole Church.

FROM THE DESK OF FATHER ANDREW

Hello everyone, I hope you had a

blessed week and were able to en-

joy some of the sunny days we had.

I want to express my deep and sin-

cere thanks to all for sharing in the

celebration with Bishop Reiss on

Tuesday, September 29, on the

Feast of St. Michael and the Archan-

gels. This begins the yearlong cele-

bration of the Michaelite Fathers

marking our Centennial Year. Thank

you for your financial support offered to the Congrega-

tion, it is greatly appreciated.

As we move into the middle weeks of October there is

much going on in our parish and around the communi-

ty, here are a few things we have to offer you!

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE

We are heading into week 3 of our fall Faith Formation

sessions via Zoom. Why not give it a try, you might be

surprised with what you gain! In last week’s bulletin,

Shannon Scanlon our Evangelization coordinator de-

scribed easy ways to be engaged in deepening your

faith. We all are responsible for our vineyard. God sends

you messengers, do not …….. (last Sunday’s Gospel).

ROSARY

Join me on Thursday evenings at 8:30 pm when I lead

the rosary live via our Facebook page. The month of

October is dedicated to Our Lady and the Rosary is the

prayer where we reflect on the mysteries of our faith.

We ask our Blessed Virgin Mother to intercede on our

behalf as we place our petitions before her. It also is

timely for us to pray for our country as we draw closer to

the election in November.

On November 1, 2020 at 11:00 am, St. Clare will cele-

brate All Souls Day with a special Mass in memory of all

those who died this past year. Candles with names of

the deceased will be prepared for all those buried from

St. Clare. If you have a family member or a loved one

who died this past year, who was not buried from St.

Clare, you can call the St. Clare parish office at 313-647-

5060 and provide the name of the person who died.

We will prepare a candle for you to carry that day in

procession along with the others.

If you would like a picture of your loved one displayed

on the church wall during the month of November,

please send a photo along with his/her full name, date

of birth, date of death, and relationship to you (i.e.

mother, sister, etc.) to bereavementminis-

member/loved one was buried from St. Clare this past

year, there is no need to contact us. We will automati-

cally prepare a picture and candle for you.)

All Souls Day

28th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 6 October 11, 2020

The school year is almost feeling nor-

mal in a new normal way. Some

standard events that help define St.

Clare of Montefalco Catholic School

remain intact. Our National Junior Hon-

or Society is beginning to share in their

commitment to life long service. They

have collection bottles in classrooms for Pregnancy

Aid. We creatively plan field trips and events like the

fishing trip this past week and the Turkey Trot on Novem-

ber 12. This year’s Turkey Trot will have a new twist to it;

It will be a fundraiser. Watch for ways to support this tra-

ditional event. Progress reports went home this week so

that families are aware mid way through the term

where their children stand in their lessons. PowerSchool

is also used for reference in reviewing progress notes for

our young learners. The Distance Learning Program is

being assessed after its implementation with nine fami-

lies this first half quarter. Virtual Fridays have been

standardized where teachers of all grades use the

same lesson plan format with students. Parents are able

to follow the uniform format to better monitor their chil-

dren’s participation on Fridays.

I believe it is important to share that St. Clare of Monte-

falco Catholic School is all about expectations, quality,

and spirituality. Though these times have been chal-

lenging, the staff, students, and families have given it

their all to maintain the integrity of the St. Clare of Mon-

tefalco Catholic School program. Parishioners, we see

you as witness to the program happening at the school.

Please know we so, so appreciate your acknowledge-

ment and support on so many levels for the school.

Your presence makes us even more viable. Your

spreading the good word has brought 5 more families

to our school this week. These families are having their

children COVID tested and quarantine at home for 2

weeks to be part of our school.

St. Clare of Montefalco Catholic School moves forward

providing a quality Catholic education focused on

faith, academics and lifelong service.

Peace, safe health, and love sent your way,

Principal

ST. CLARE SCHOOL

The grade 3/4 combination class is starting the new school year with curiosity, compassion, and commitment!

Curiosity

Not only are we learning new information in all our subjects, but we’re also analyzing and comparing facts and

figures. For example, in science we will research the difference between a leopard and a jaguar. In social studies,

we compared the preambles of the U.S. Constitution and the Michigan State Constitution.

Compassion

With the help of Sister Mary Peter, who teaches our Religion classes, we’re learning how to be more like Jesus.

We’ve learned about how God forgives us, and how we should try to for-

give one another and ourselves by being kind and compassionate while

still trying to do better.

Commitment

With the school precautions required by Covid19, our class has commit-

ted to doing everything we can to keep each other safe – including

wearing our masks and observing social distancing guidelines. We’re very

fortunate to have several teachers for our class this year! In addition to

daily Religion classes with Sister Mary Peter, we have special teachers for

Art, Music, Spanish, PE, Library and Technology. Also, Ms. Harris is teach-

ing Grade 3 - Language Arts and Math, while Ms. Nader is teaching

Grade 4 - Language Arts and Math as well as science and social studies

to all the third and fourth graders.

We’re looking forward to a great year with inspiration from our

class motto: We are smart. We are kind. We are beautiful – inside and

out. God loves us – just the way we are!

ST. CLARE PARISH COMMUNITY EVENTS

Thank you to everyone who attended Sunset Yoga at

St. Clare presented by Antonelli Financial Advisors.

There were many St. Clare School parents and alums in

attendance, some who saw the event on Facebook

and wanted to support! $2000 was raised which is go-

ing to both St. Clare School and St. Clare Athletics to

help offset the costs associated with the pandemic.

The class was taught by Jacqueline Gray who teaches

at Living Waters Yoga. Many sponsors and donors

made the night a success including Antonelli Financial

Advisors, Mary & Bob Conway, Maureen "Granmo"

Moynihan, The Stevens Family, The Corner Studio, A1

Performance & Fitness, and Rhythm & Blue Juice Com-

pany. A few raffles for free classes to local gyms and a

goodie bag for each attendee, complete with a fresh

juice from Rhythm & Blue Juice Company, were a

pleasant surprise to attendees.

Thank you to my Mom, Dad, Mary Catherine Rentz and

Mr. McDevitt for helping me set-up and coordinate

registration.

Thank you!

Sunset Yoga - Thank you!
