From the PrincipalThe start of the year has been a great one for both studentsand staff. We have started the year with more students enrollingwith us yet again. Our official enrolment day, day 8, had a totalof 1186 students with 268 year 7 enrolments this year. Thecommunity confidence in our school continues to strengthenand this increase in enrolment is testament to the great work wedo both in and outside our classrooms. These year 7 studentshave settled in well following their orientation week. This wasa great week and opportunity for students to meet and get toknow other students in their new classes, as well as the staffthat they will be working with throughout the year. I would liketo welcome all our new and returning families to the school andI look forward to the next 6 years of working with your child.
The rest of the school community has also settled in well andwe are off to a flying start! This is an important year for our year12 students who not only complete their year 12 schooling withus, but are the last cohort to sit the Queensland Core Skills(QCS) test. We will be working with students to maximise theiracademic opportunities to receive their OP.
Our year 11 students have started their academic journey underthe new QCE conditions. This is a change for both studentsand staff and we will be closely tracking and monitoring theirprogress. It is essential that students are passing all theirsubjects to receive an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank(ATAR).
The key to academic success continues to be attendance. It is essential that students are attending school, each andevery day, engaging in their learning. Students find difficultyattempting to fill gaps in their knowledge when they miss classand extra pressure is placed on them to catch up. How can you
assist your student? Ensure they attend school every day andare ready for learning.

From the Deputy Principal - Learning
Welcome to Hervey Bay State High School
Welcome to Hervey Bay State High School for 2019, andespecially a very warm welcome to new families to the schoolthis year. I am looking forward to working with our Year 8 andYear 11 cohorts this year and hope to build strong, workingpartnerships with students and carers alike. Should studentshave issues arise, please encourage them to contact oursupport services in G block, or discuss with their casemanagers to ensure that their school year runs smoothly.
Year 11 Students
Year 11 sees the start of your child’s two year journey ofsenior schooling. This is the time that they need an increasedfocus and commitment to their schooling by developing healthylearning and study habits. Students are reminded that they arenow in the post compulsory phase of schooling, and if notcommitted to their studies they can expect consequences putinto place as per the Academic Good Standing Policy (for moredetails please consult your school diary). Students who fail toattend school, and/or don’t meet the academic requirements oftheir subjects may find their enrolment cancelled and the end ofthe Good Standing process. We encourage families to seek outassistance early if issues arise as it is certainly much better tointervene and support prior to it becoming a major problem.
Literacy and Numeracy Focus
Literacy and Numeracy form our key focus areas for 2019.Our staff are dedicated to improving the literacy and numeracyoutcomes for our students, and are working on whole schoolstrategies to do so. Our Head of Department Literacy, MsRose Whittingham, continues on our literacy journey with usthis year. Mr Mark Thomson joins us again this year as ourLiteracy Mentor. Ms Whittingham’s literacy team has alreadystarted testing our incoming year 7 students to see who would
benefit from our intervention programs. Our successful ReadingProgram will continue again this year, and our Learning SupportTeacher Aides are busy gathering information on wherestudents are at for their participation in 2019. We were verypleased with the progress our reading students made last yearand are keen to continue that level of success. Keep tuned forfurther details in coming weeks.
Our numeracy team, led by Mr Brett Moffett (Head ofMathematics), are continuing their work this year assisting allfaculties to implement numeracy strategies. We once againhave Mr Shane Folker this year as Numeracy Mentor, andwill continue working with Mr Rob Proffitt-White (previousNumeracy Regional Support). We are fortunate to have such afantastic team!
Road Safety
The end of the school day is always busy, and can be a difficulttime for students to manage their way home in a crowd. Pleaseremind your students to use the designated crossings, and notto run out into traffic to jump into vehicles. We have witnessedseveral very close calls while on bus duty last week and wouldnot like to see any student endanger themselves further.
Ms Sharyn ThomasDeputy Principal

A great week had by all students and staff.
Year 7 Vaccinations
Hervey Bay State High School is participating in QueenslandHealth’s annual School Immunisation Program. All Year 7students have been offered free vaccinations as recommendedon the National Immunisation Program schedule. Envelopescontaining permission forms and information have beenprovided to students last week and were requested to bereturned by Monday 18 February, as a representation from thevaccination provider will come to collect them from the schoolafter this day. If your child didn’t receive an envelope last week, please call into the office to collect.

returned forms from our school for the next round ofimmunisations.
New laws require the school Principal to disclose student andparent information for eligible students to the schoolimmunisation provider if requested. This information will enablethe school immunisation provider to determine those who haveand have not consented, and directly follow-up with parentsof students who have not yet returned a consent card. Thisdirect follow-up ensures all parents are offered the opportunityfor their child to participate in this important school healthprogram. It may also assist you in making decisions about yourchild’s immunisation needs. Parents who have indicated “No toVaccination” will not be followed up by the provider.
School immunisation providers will be bound to comply withthe Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld). This Act stipulates therequirements for the secure collection, use, storage anddisposal of personal information. The vaccinations will beconducted by a team of authorized registered nurses and/or a medical practitioner. Parents are encouraged to ensuretheir children have an adequate breakfast on the morning ofvaccination, and adequate food and drink for the day.
