Issue#93

Recently, I watched an interview where Brené Brown spoke of the relationship between joy and gratitude. Her findings from her research were unexpected. She found that those who practice a tangible practice of gratitude, invite joy into their lives.

This made me think – how intentional am I at being grateful? I have begun a gratitude journal, and it is incredible how many small, seemingly insignificant things occur each and every day that are worthy of gratitude.

Reflecting on Term 1 in the Senior Primary, we have an enormous amount to be grateful for. We started the year in what felt like a brand new building – new carpets and lockers changed the face of our school. What a privilege to work in such a beautiful space!

We also have a brand new vision for our school, which was shared with our parents at the beginning of the term. Understanding our greater mission unites us as a team and helps tremendously in remembering why we do what we do. Education is extremely exciting! Part of our vision is for our school to become an accred-ited ‘Thinking School’, and our Drive Team launched a wonderfully engaging assembly to our girls (I wonder who saw DJ Key-Dawg’s

appearance on the DGC Facebook page?). As I see our first thinking tool, Thinking Maps, slowly becoming more embedded into our syl-labus, I am reminded how enormously grateful I am to our teachers for their hard work and commitment in creating a relevant, 21st century curriculum for our girls.

‘Grit’ has become part of our language in the Senior Primary, and a definite highlight of the term has been seeing our swimmers being rewarded for their relentless effort in their training over the past 12 months. Their improved results this year are amazing! I am enormously proud of them, and we have all been able to learn valuable lessons of perseverance from these girls and their coaches.

I am so grateful that I get to do what I do, in this place, at this time, with these people. #SoMuchJoy

I wish all our families a wonderful, restful holiday and look forward to welcoming everybody back in Term 2.

Junior Primary

The Grade 00 girls celebrated the end of their ‘colour’ theme by having a 'Rainbow Day'. The girls (and teach-ers!) dressed up in beautiful rainbow colours. Many rainbow activities were enjoyed by all, and the day ended with a delicious rainbow picnic with foods reflecting the special colours of the rainbow.

We use a multi-sensory approach to learning sounds. We have so much fun in Grade R!

The Grade 2s had such an amazing morning spending time with their "brothers" at Clifton. They watched a show called ‘Under the Sea’ and learnt about the pollution of our oceans in a fun and interactive way. A great time was had with Busy Ballers – playing active games and fun activities whilst working together with the Clifton boys. An enjoyable morning was had by all! Thank you to Clifton for being such wonderful hosts!

Janet-Marié Venter - High School Afrikaans TeacherI grew up and matriculated in Pinetown. Thereafter, I moved to Pretoria where I studied Fine Arts, Journalism and eventually did my Honours in Afrikaans.

Coming from a family of many teachers (my mom is a retired Afrikaans teacher), I never specifically “planned” to follow a career in Education. Towards the end of my Honours year, I was asked to man the phone at the Afrikaans Department for a few minutes (I was a tutor at the university and this was sometimes necessary when the secretary left her desk for any reason). With my final exams looming, I had NO idea what I was going to do the following year. Call it divine intervention/fate/a case of good luck, but I was soon going to receive a phone call that would change my life forever (and also change my status from potentially jobless to ‘first-year Afrikaans F.A.L. teacher’, or ‘Juffrou’ - a title that I have held ever since).

Before moving back to KwaZulu-Natal at the end of 2016, I taught at a co-ed school for about six years, then at an all-girls school for two years and English in Mokpo, South Ko-rea for one year. Back in Durban, I was employed at an all-boys school for one year, but realised that I missed the interaction and energy of a girls school, so I was very happy to start my journey here at Durban Girls’ College.

I currently reside in Manor Gardens and am interested in natural health practices, aro-matherapy and sustainable living. My hobbies include upcycling items bought at charity shops, travelling to exotic destinations, cooking marmalade and reading books (mostly fiction – both English and Afrikaans).

My dream since childhood has always been to, one day, see the Loch Ness Monster.

From our ChaplainA good response to times of trouble or anxiety is to call out to God as the Psalmists did. You may wish to make this prayer, by Kerry Weber (Executive Editor: America Magazine), the echo of your heart:

[Lord] Jesus, come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coro-navirus, that we may experience your healing love. Heal those who are sick with the virus; may they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbours from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.

Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace. Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection.

Be with the leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth. Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace.

From our Sports DeskValue #4 - Enjoyment

Sport enjoyment is the most important and most studied positive emotion in youth, adolescent and elite sport. Early youth sport research found that 'fun' was one of the most important reasons given by athletes for choosing to participate in sports and lack of fun was the primary reason for dropping out. Significant sources of enjoyment come from being in a team with peers, positive interactions, building friendships and supporting each other. The other significant source comes from their parents and coaches, where they find it enjoyable to bring pleasure and pride through demonstrating their talent. But, it is the lack of pressure and unrealistic performance expectations of parents which leads to greater enjoyment.

Our annual SP Parents vs Daughters Swimming Gala and party was a great source of enjoyment to end what has been a highly successful term for our swimmers. We had 66 girls that formed part of our SP Swimming Team this term, and it has been amazing to see the culture and love for swimming that has developed.
