In 1973, Pat Fetterman arrived in Cooperstown—specifically as the Associate Director of The Clark Sports Center—and began the junior basketball program that continues to this day. Pat spent a significant amount of time coaching and teaching fundamental basketball skills to hundreds of youngsters but is remembered most for his insistence on fair play and good sportsmanship. He truly enjoyed working with young players on their individual skills and promoted team work from the first minute of the first practice to the last minute of the final game of the season and set high standards along the way.

Once, in a championship game in a girl’s tournament, the game was tied and it was the final few seconds. Cooperstown had the ball and took a time out to discuss strategy. Coach Fetterman pointed out the other team would be looking for the strongest player to take the ball out and make a run for the basket and would plan their strategy accordingly. He encouraged the girls to think of a play that would benefit the whole team and would win the game but if it didn’t work out, at least they gave it the best shot they could think of. They decided to put the ball in bounds

From the Athletic DirectorDear Participants and Guests:

Welcome to The Clark Sports Center and thank you for participating in the fifth annual Patrick C. Fetterman Junior Basketball Memorial Tournament. This year we have six girl’s teams and six boy’s teams who are working hard this season to accomplish the goals their coaches have set for them.

Our goal at The Clark Sports Center during this tournament is to provide players with a positive experience and instill values of sportsmanship and fair play. It is our hope that as fans you will cheer good play and respect the decisions of the officials. The officials are volunteers who care about young children and have good knowledge of the game. We are confident with their performances and know they will call every game fairly and to the best of their ability.

Please take the time throughout the day to enjoy our facility. Our members will also be using it and there is a schedule in place for each program area. Schedules can be found at the information table in the main lobby. Should you have any questions about anything, please check in with our information table in the lobby or a Sports Center staff member.

Have fun and enjoy the games!

Sincerely, Barry Gray, Athletics Director

then pass it quickly to Meghan to take the final shot. Meghan was the smallest player on the team but definitely had the biggest heart and sacrificed many of her own shots throughout the season in order to “make sure” they would score points and win games. The girls put their plan into effect, passed Meghan the ball, and she made the shot, winning the championship. The transformation in that group of girls that day was immediate, powerful, and lasted well into their high school and college athletic experiences. They were encouraged by Pat to make a decision based on a sense of team and what they thought was fair and trusted themselves enough to pull it off. Meghan, her parents, and other spectators still talk about that day and the way Pat Fetterman coached the girls to take everything into consideration, do their best, and be happy with the results no matter what.

This is only one of the hundreds of Pat Fetterman coaching stories that reflect his caring and compassionate manner and his devotion to creating positive experiences that change young lives.

Thanks Pat!

Tournament Rules Rosters • All players must be in the sixth grade or below and must be born on or after September 1st, 1995. If a player is found to be in a grade above the sixth grade or born before September 1st, 1995, then that team will be disqualified. Team rosters are frozen after the first game—no additions are allowed. Teams must have numbered uniforms.

Game Schedules • Each team will play two full court games against teams in their pool. The two teams with the best records in each pool will automatically advance to the semifinals. The remaining teams will play in quarterfinal games with the winners advancing to the semifinals, and those winners will move on to the finals. Tiebreaker (if needed) in the pool play will be as follows: Win/loss, head to head record, then bracket point.

Game Time • In the round robin and quarterfinal games, each half will be 18 minutes running time. The clock will stop in the last minute of the first half and the last two minutes of the second half (if games are within 15 points). Each overtime will be a two minute stop time period. The semifinal and championship games will be 7 minute quarters with stop time. Overtimes in semifinal and championship games will be 3 minutes with stop time.

Timeouts • Each team will receive 4 timeouts that will be 1 minute long. Coaches may use up to 2 timeouts per half. In overtime periods, each team will receive one timeout.

Game Play • Teams will be allowed to press the last two minutes of each half as long as they are not winning by more than 10 points. The 10 second back court rule is in effect for both boys and girls games. Defense in the back court is not allowed—a warning will be given for the first offense followed by a two shot technical for each additional violation. Teams must play man to man defense but help defense is allowed. The three point shot is in effect. Bonus will be on the seventh team foul per half and double bonus on the tenth. Any player receiving a technical foul will be required to serve a three minute cooling off period. If two technicals are called on the same player or coach they will be ejected for that game. If another technical foul is received at any time during the tournament, they will be ejected from the tournament.

Defensive Rule • Players must be within the 3 foot man to man rule once the ball crosses the white line on the floor. This rule will be clarified to coaches by the officials before each game.

Awards and T-shirtsTrophies • First and second place boys and girls teams will receive a trophy. One boy and one girl will receive a Most Valuable Player trophy. One boy and one girl will receive a Sportsmanship Award. Five girls and five boys will be honored as members of an All Tournament Team. The Clark Sports Center will add the name of the winning boys and girls teams and MVP players to the plaque on the wall in the Gym Floor. All awards will be given out after the final game (the Boys Championship Game).

T-shirts • The tournament will feature T-shirts that will be given to each player and head coach. Extra shirts, if available, will be sold at the Main Desk.
