From The East June was a busy month for the Lodge. The degree work performed by the Lodge Brothers is some of the best in Arizona. The Grand Lodge Communication was held in Tucson on 3-5 June. I was proud to be in attendance to represent the interests of Huachuca Lodge No. 53. There were many Brothers from our area to show our support and respect for Grand Master Michael T. Bishop. It may be several more years before we have a Grand Master from Cochise County. The Grand Master for the 2010-2011 Grand Lodge year is Most Worshipful Brother James W. Rowan. We had the pleasure of his making an official visit to our Lodge this past March as the Deputy Grand Master. At our stated meeting in July we will have an official visit by Right Worshipful Master D. Brook Cunningham, the Deputy Grand Master for the Grand Lodge year 2010-2011. The Grand Lodge approved the proposed budget which increased the per capita to $28. This per capita increase will be reflected in your next dues notice sent out with the 2011 dues notice. Hopefully this will be the last per capi-ta tax increase for several years. Another area of interest to the members is the Grand Lodge passed a resolution that prohibits fire arms in the Lodge room, except for law enforcement personnel. The Tombstone Worshipful Master Bruce Wood, King Sol-omon Lodge No. 5, provided a history tidbit to the Grand Lodge Communication. WB Bruce stated that in the early days, (Wyatt Earp timeframe), all weapons were checked with the Tyler and not allowed in the Lodge room. This

reinforced the Grand Master’s premise (MWB Mike Bishop) that we teach in the first degree lecture that nothing offensive or defensive should be brought into the Lodge, whereby its peace and harmony might be dis-turbed. As I am writing this article Carole and I are in Detroit (Romulus), Michigan, attend-ing the 89th International High Twelve Masonic Conven-tion. Our first night was an experience as we heard the tornado sirens wailing right outside the Hotel window. It just reinforces why Carole and I have chosen Arizona as our home, no tornados, no hurricanes, just good Arizona weather. With the help and support of Lodge Secretary, Brother Jim Elliston the Lodge is in good hands with your Senior Warden Phillip Shulsky and Junior Warden Jeff York, who are keeping things running smoothly. There is more degree work to be scheduled this month in July. We should have three candidates to be initiated and one Fellowcraft to be raised. The Brothers that are in the area are encouraged to sup-port the Lodge and the candidates that are going through the Masonic degrees. I thank each of you for your continued support this year and look forward to seeing you at the Lodge. Fraternally, Harry Brown Master

3 Taking Good Men, and Making Them Better

The Widows Sons are a national Ma-sonic Riding club. Our local chapter was started by a few of our brothers in and around Benson. Essentially it is an opportunity for like minded men to gather together for their fellowship. Their requirements for membership are very simple and focus on being licensed to ride. They have two levels. One is reserved for current master masons; the other is for men working through the degrees. If you have a bike, are legally licensed, and wish to ride with other Brothers this might be a club for you.

Lastly this month I am pleased to report that, according to information provided to me, all our local Lodges are seeing an increase in interest and as a result are doing degree work. I strongly encourage everyone to support other Lodges where you can.

Fraternally, Phillip Shulsky Senior Warden

From The Yest Brethren,

Two interesting pieces of topics were discussed and voted on and Grand Lodge last month and both were local to our County. The first allowed Campstone #77 to become a daylight Lodge. The second sanctioned a Masonic motor-cycle riding club called “The widows Sons.” The charters granted to each of these bodies are crucial pieces to the relevance of masonry in our community.

When the “No Mason Left Behind” project was imple-mented two years ago Lodges were directed to contact all of their members, active and otherwise. In these commu-nications, several people stated that they wished they could still attend Lodge, but due to age and eyesight could not drive at night. Campstone #77 now offers an alterna-tive to the night time Lodge. Sadly, due to either lack of knowledge or lack of concern, we have not observed a surge in attendance beyond those that normally attend Lodge. This is disheartening to say the least, and I am going to go out on a limb and assume that the word just isn’t getting out to our Brothers. So please, if you can, con-tact the brothers that do not attend Lodge. Inform them of the opportunity to attend Lodge during the day (2nd Sat-urday of the month).

Mentorship Not only does the candidate benefit from having a mentor, but the lodge itself is strengthened. Candidates from the beginning, are able to feel that they can participate, which allows them to understand the lodge workings, and the result is that they show up more often. They are eager to participate and allows the master to have a more fully trained lodge. I myself can remember, not that long ago being an eager Entered Apprentice. It is due to the brotherly love, sup-port and teachings of my older brothers that I have a greater appreciation of Masonry. It has thus enabled me to progress and continually learn. It has also inspired me to continue with the traditions that have been passed

down to me and show my younger brothers all that I am learning. Having had the opportunity of being a mentor, I believe that we should all work together in making sure that our younger brothers feel that they can come to any of us for additional assis-tance at any time. We are able to be proud of the hard work that has been put into the hours of mentorship. Not only are we helping our brothers but continuing our own masonic education. Thus strengthening the bonds of brotherhood. Sincerely and Fraternally Yours, Brother Jeffrey K York

From The South

Brothers All, we are now into the new Grand Lodge year and with it is my chance to clarify something. After talk-ing with several Lodge Officers throughout Cochise Coun-ty many were not aware of the Grand Lodge year when it applies to a great Grand Lodge program "The Awards Pro-gram." Each year each lodge will receive an awards pack-et from the Grand Secretary and each Lodge should enter any one of several programs offered within the awards program. For example Mason of the Year. Nominees are submitted to the Grand Lodge Committee after 1 April for consideration and awarding at the Grand Lodge Session in early June. These nominees ARE the Lodges Mason of the Year and the year starts June 1 through May 31 of the next year. We all know that each lodge has Brothers who deserve consideration for Mason of the Year and we should not pass up the opportunity to show that apprecia-tion. The Grand Lodge communications held in Tucson was a very good experience for me as I have attended sev-eral Grand Lodge sessions both in the U.S. and overseas and I really appreciated the well organized registration, meals and accommodations. If you are > interested in knowing the out come on the voting of resolutions and the Grand Masters Recommendations contact your Lodge Master or Secretary or myself (in that order please). The presentation to the MWGM Michael T. Bishop by King Solomon Lodge #5 was really great with the Grand Mas-ter receiving a real Stetson western hat sloop and all.

Additionally, the Past Grand Master jewel that once belonged to PGM Verne D.Hegge was presented to MWGM Michael and he was really honored to receive it. WM Bruce Wood from King Solomon Lodge #5 and WM Harry Brown from Huachu-ca Lodge #53 opened a Grand Lodge session and really did a great job even being nervous about it. The new Most Worshipful Grand Master is WB Jim Rowan who lives in Scottsdale and the 2011 Grand Lodge communications will be held in Flagstaff June 2011. I encourage all Lodge pedestal Officers to start saving now and be able to attend this very important Masonic event. The accommodations and Grand Lodge session will be at the Little America Hotel and is located very close to the highway and the town of Flagstaff. The weather and sur-rounding areas are really great this time of year and I hope you will attend and enjoy your self. Andrew Anderson DDGM #9

5 Taking Good Men, and Making Them Better

The question last month was "What is a Clan‐destine Lodge and Mason?'  A Clandestine Lodge is one that is operating with a charter that has not been issued by a duly recognized Grand Lodge. An individual who belongs to one of these Lodges is con‐sidered a Clandestine Mason.   The new question is "How many U. S. Presi‐dents were Masons?"

Question of the Month Degrees Conferred

Mentorship

By Brother Phillip Shulsky

Mentorship is a crucial part of what we do. It begins when we sign as a recommender on a candidate’s petition and continues the rest of his life. So much of what we do is unwritten. Case in point – Lodge eti-quette. I’ve never actually seen a written document listing all the rules of how we behave in lodge. I’ve “learned” that most seem to be common sense, but a few were not. As I made mistakes, I was construc-tively corrected by brothers. Thus, they are my men-tors.

The point is we are all mentors. Young masons, like me, watch the older, more experienced masons. We copy your behaviors and attitudes. We look to you to make us better men. It’s a heavy responsibility, I’m sure.

I would like to personally thank all of the active masons of our lodge for mentoring me. I must high-light a couple of our brothers for the extra time and effort they put in with me, and most of the new mason of the last year. Bro Matt Covel has person-ally carried most of the candidates of the last year through their proficiencies and has strongly encour-aged learning the rituals. WB Andy Anderson, in addition to all the other things he does, runs a ritual practice every Tuesday at 5PM at the lodge. It is here, at the practices, where I have learned the most.

Eric Robin Kappas was raised on June 23rd. Lets all wel-come Eric to the craft when we see him. Congratulations and job well done Eric!

Annual Outdoor Degree

You are cordially invited to attend and participate in our annual outdoor degree on September 18th. We feel that our annual outdoor degree is the finest outdoor degree in your jurisdiction. It is well attended by brethren from all over the state and from other jurisdictions. We would be honored in your attendance. We are currently as-signing ritual positions for the degree conferral and would be delighted to include the Grand Lodge officers. Of course the degree conferral at Fain Ranch in Dewey, Arizona is awaiting favorable dispensation.

Registration begins at 8:00 am allowing for fellowship and camaraderie while enjoying "cowboy" coffee and

donuts (sinkers) prior to Lodge opening at 10:00 am. Naturally this is an old west event and our brethren en-joy wearing western style clothing: cowboy hats and boots (spurs are optional). And we are continuing our tradition of including a complimentary bolo tie with the cost of the event which includes a delicious pit barbe-que lunch served between the first and second sections of the degree. Further details along with maps, direc-tions and convenient online reservations are available on our website at www.aztlanlodge.org/outdoordegree.html

We certainly look forward to your attendance and par-ticipation at this very popular event. If you have any questions or wish to express your preference in a ritual position assignment please contact the event coordina-tor Senior Warden Bro. George Weil by e-mail ([email protected]) or cell phone (928) 277-6326.

Past Masters

My Brothers and Nobels,

Cochise Scottish Rite Club wel-comes our Sojourners and cur-rent members and guests to join with us. Our next sched-

uled meeting is July 17th, 2010 at Huachuca Lodge 53 dining room at 8 am. Breakfast will be served by the Co-chise High Twelve.

The Huachuca Shrine Club had its monthly dinner at Ri-cardo’s. The dinner was once again a nice meal off the menu. Carol Doctor, Councilwoman from Sierra Vista was our guest speaker. Joyce Barnard won the free meal and the 50/50 drawing, was a nice evening by all that attend-ed. Seems that the Camel always gets an extra donation when we dine there. Maybe because the have a friendly bar there.

The Vidalia Onion sales are done for this year. We re-ceived 2450lbs and have about 700lbs left to sell. We re-turned the onions and Sabbar Shrine did sell out so no wasted onions. Walgreen’s was nice enough to let the Shrine’s set up at all of their locations in Southeast Arizo-na. Thanks to Nobels Bill Kelly, Dave Kremer, Dale Wal-dron, Ralph Hooten, Johnny Lankford, Tom Jones, Andy Anderson, Eric Navarro and Lady Joyce Barnard. These folks where really what made it go well this year. Our days at Walmart are a thing of the past. Also in planning is the picnic at Ft Huachuca on August 7th, 2010 your ticket packet will be arriving in the mail soon, if I have your mailing address. You can also contact Tom Jones at [email protected] or (520) 378-6399. No Huachuca Shrine Club meetings will be held in July or August. See you at the Picnic.

The next Club meeting will be in Sept, at Ricardo’s at 5:30.

Respectfully, Tom Jones

any Mason of the Year is in order and these two Brothers are most deserving when you consider all the work they do and continue to do in their Lodges. The Club was well attended with 30 Bro's and Sisters present to enjoy a real taco bowl salad along with all the trimmings for a great taco salad. The Club will be dark for July and August so the next meeting is scheduled for September 10 and will be held at the VFW in Huachuca City to enjoy a great steak dinner. JOB'S DAUGHTERS OF AZ

I had the honor and pleasure of attending the 59th AZ Job's Daughter Annual Session Banquet on June 24, 2010 in Casa Grande and what a great time. I was filling in for the High Twelve State President WM Harry Brown while he was attending the Intl High Twelve Convention out of state. The Jobbies all looked very beautiful all dressed and well mannered, the decorations were original and everyone was made to feel welcomed. The real reason I decided to write about this Grand Session is to tell every-one that the Job's Daughter support an endowment fund to provide hearing devices to needy children. It's formal name is "The HIKE Fund" (The Hearing Impaired Endow-ment Fund). The purpose of HIKE is to provide hearing devices to hearing impaired children from newborn to twenty years old. Job's Daughters is the only internation-al organization for girls that requires ALL of its Members to have a relationship to a Master Mason, and while it is not part of the Masonic Fraternity, this pre-requisite ties it closely to the Masonic Order. Our support get's involved when we read a letter at a stated meeting from a Job's Bethel asking for a donation in support of their Bethel. They need our support Brothers and as Doctor Laura says "Now

Go Do The Right Thing."

Cochise County Child Identification Program (CHIP) Courtesy of Brother Paul Weishaupt, King Solomon Lodge

It’s a sad fact of life that in America today almost 800,000 children annually are abducted or harmed. Volunteers of the Cochise County Child Identification Program (CHIP) are taking steps to ensure that if it happens, a loved one is found and returned to the fam-ily.

On Saturday, June 19, 2010 at Buena High School in Sierra Vista, parents of sixty-eight children took an im-portant step in keeping their children safer in this in-creasingly unsafe world. They entered them into CHIP.

The program is free of charge and takes about 20 minutes to com-plete. When it’s done, the parents have a computer disc with the child’s personal information on it, including a set of digital fingerprints and images, a vid-eo of the child, two wallet-sized cards for the parents with pertinent in-formation and a swab with a DNA sample of the child.

The information is packaged in an envelope that can

be kept with them in the event it is ever needed for police or search and rescue personnel; the CD is Amber Alert ready.

When Jim Elliston, current president of the group, heard of CHIP programs operating in the U.S., he got involved in obtaining a CHIP for Cochise County. The group was formed in September 2009 with nine volunteers and one documenting system.

They held their first event in November 11, 2009 at the Holiday Park in Sierra Vista where they documented 27

children. “It was great start. We knew then that we were going to have to expand and grow,” said Jim Elliston.

The group now has three systems with a fourth on order and 35 volunteers from various organizations in the area. “My goal is to make it available to all the children in the county,” said Elliston. The all-volunteer program is a stand-alone not for profit organization.

The documenting system is called EZ Child ID System and is designed by EZ Child ID, Co., in Redfield, Michi-gan. The system costs about $2,800 per unit and con-sists of a computer system with program, video and photographic imager, printer, digital fingerprinting tech-nology, DNA sampling material and associated materi-al.

To get started, Jim and his wife, Shirley, purchased the first system. “The other systems were funded by Elks lodges in the region, Masonic organizations and indi-viduals who realized the merit of this type of service to the community,” said Elliston.

The system retains personal data long enough to transfer it to a disc for the parent or guardian and then the data is completely erased from the system. The overwhelming comments by the families using the ser-vice are positive. They are very appreciative of the ser-vice and just about all say that this is something they wanted to do for their children but either didn’t have the

“Protecting the young…one child at a time”

According to the U.S. De-partment of Justice 2002 statistics, about 2,185 children are reported missing each day, which adds up to more than 797,500 annually. Of that total, almost 204,000, or about 25 percent, are family abductions.

An estimated 58,200 are abducted by someone oth-er than a family member and, of those, 115 are taken by complete or par-tial strangers and kept for a period of time or murdered.

13 Taking Good Men, and Making Them Better

The system can capture all ten fingerprints and save them in the universal PDF format. The parents or guardians not only receive a printed ID card and form, but also a CD with all of the child’s information.

Above, Phil Shulsky instructs Paul Weishaupt in the us-age of the system at a health fair event at the Buena High School on Saturday, June 19, 2010 in Sierra Vista

“This is the new standard in child identification programs which is being used by law enforcement in 40 states. In fact, it can also be used to document adults. The volun-teers capture all the vital information of children required by the Amber Alert system,” said Elliston. The next event is on Thursday, July 1 at Fort Huachuca and after that at the Elks Mall on Saturday on July 17, 2010.

Anyone can volunteer and training is provided free. For information about CHIP, contact Jim Elliston at (623) 680-8380 or via e-mail at: [email protected].

funds to purchase it or weren’t aware the service was so easily accessible.

The EZ Child ID system (above) is unique in that it is a comprehensive digital child identification system pack-aged in a light weight aluminum suitcase that can easi-ly be transported and quickly set up at any location. To ensure there is no possibility of identity theft, the EZ Child ID Software Kit was written so that no information of the child can be saved on the computer.

All the personal information is erased once the system is started over. The parent or guardian is the only per-son who retains any data. For more information on the system, contact the company at 313-531-3241 or email at [email protected]. The company’s website is at www.ezchild.com.

With a little computer savvy, anyone can utilize the system. “Training volunteers to operate the system is easy,” said Elliston, “and can be done in less than two hours.”
