From Sue
Staffing
This week will see Anne Coburn conclude her term as acting Assistant Principal. Anne has provided valuable
and excellent support, leadership and initiative which have been of benefit to the staff, students and
community over the term. In particular her efforts with the coordination and preparation for NAPLAN
testing and all aspects of the reporting process have been greatly appreciated.
Robyn Farnell and Joy Brebner will resume from Long Service Leave next term.
Commencing in Term 3, Jen Sze, class teacher of 1B – Silver Gums will be reducing her time fraction and
will work three days each week on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We have Louise Jones resuming
from Family Leave to teach on Thursdays and Fridays in Silver Gums. I welcome Louise back to the
Hampton team.
LOTE (Languages Other Than English) Learning in Year 1
During this term each of the five Year 1 classes has explored the culture and language of
one of the following countries: Indonesia, China, France, Italy and Japan. Each grade has
used the inquiry approach to drive the learning in LOTE and this has culminated in an
international gallery walk yesterday where the children displayed their projects and
discussed their learning with visitors. I visited the gallery walk and was absolutely
delighted with the enthusiasm and excitement the children displayed in wanting to share
their knowledge and understanding of the culture and language.
An impressive Eiffel Tower constructed in a foil 3D model by Matt Cole in 1E - Scribbly
Gums
Furthermore, the standard of the displays was most impressive indeed and clearly evident in
3D models, children using Google searches but attempting to paraphrase and re-state in their
own words, dioramas displaying some very intricate and cleverly designed art work,
beautifully presented headings, attention to detail using sub headings and sections, diagrams
with notes and labels attached, photos and commentary from some children who had visited
the country etc. Some of these skills are more commonly applied in senior grades!
A very snappy 3D vending machine in Japan by George Pidduck in 1D – Spotted Gums
I am aware that many children may have been supported and I am sure, inspired by family
members in preparing their projects. How lovely is this – to have the whole family engaged
and challenged with the concept of showcasing their learning to best advantage.
An Italian diorama showcasing the Colosseum by Nadia Stockwell 1C – Shining Gums
Students from Spotted Gums have been introduced to Japanese through use of apps, Big
Books including Snapshots of Asia and YouTube clips to learn counting, basic greetings and
interesting facts about Japan.
Excellent use of a cut out with traditional Japanese costume by Holly Lambeth 1D – Spotted
Gums
Students in Sugar Gums have been introduced to Indonesian through the program Languages
on Line to learn numbers, basic greetings, colours etc. One focus has included comparing
and contrasting cultures between Indonesia and Australia using Venn diagrams in
Mathematics.
A particularly well presented poster on Indonesia by Rocco Theuma in 1A – Sugar Gums
Students in Silver Gums have been introduced to Mandarin using the app Kids Learn
Mandarin – learning numbers, sounds, basic greetings and some food. Student engagement
has been a focus during the inquiry component to the learning where stereotypes relating to
appearance, food and language etc., have been explored.
A cleverly devised poster on China by Miles Cooper in 1B – Silver Gums
The Year 1 Term 3 Inquiry and LOTE learning will focus on:
Big Ideas:
Cultural features of the country they are learning about
Making connections to their own country and lives
Comparing and contrasting features of cultures
Guiding Questions:
Cultural features of the country they are learning about -
What might a day in the life of a Year 1 student living in ……………. be like?
Make connections to their own country and lives -
How might the life of this student be similar or different to yours?
What might the similarities and differences be between your country and Australia?
Compare and contrast features of cultures -
How might the lives of students in different countries be similar or different?
Interested parents are warmly invited to view the projects on display in the Year 1 classrooms.
Year 5/6 Production: ‘Rindercella’
Our Year 5/6s are about to commence work on the production. Rindercella is a modern take on the traditional
fairy tale of Cinderella. The script has been written by Bruce Grantford who has considerable experience and
skill in this area. Furthermore we are very fortunate to have the skills and expertise from Mandy Lyn Brook
who is a director for our show and brings much experience both throughout Australia and internationally as a
performer, entertainer and director. Mandy and Traci are auditioning currently with strong interest expressed
from all grades for the numerous roles. In speaking with Juliette Doyle from 5/6A – Wattles, this production
has:
amazing characters with extraordinary and quite exaggerated personalities
a wicked and unexpected twist from the traditional storyline
There will be loads of singing, dancing and drama ahead for all children. Term 3 will see a strong focus on
the production for all Year 5/6s with the performance dates Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 October at the
Kingston Arts Centre in Moorabbin. I am confident that the Hampton production will once again be an
impressive one and hopefully a highlight of 2014 for many children.

Academic Excellence Awards
Congratulations go to the following students who received an academic excellence award at assembly:
Alexandra Thomlinson from 2C – Coral Gums for displaying an outstanding approach to school and
a quiet determination to do her best at all times, resulting in commendable achievement in all areas
and especially in writing

consistently trying to do his best
Nicholas Capel from Prep D – Ghost Gums for displaying excellent application and perseverance in
all tasks and making commendable achievement in reading.
Assembly Performances
Yesterday 1A – Sugar Gums and 1D – Spotted Gums enthusiastically led the singing of the national anthem
at assembly. We had the Year 2 choir conducted by Simone Tickell present two songs – Ms Sue and Just
Gimme the Beat, both tunes had great rhythm which the members of choir maximised during their
performance.
The Year 2/3 Bollywood dance group also performed and impressed the audience with their developing
skill and confidence.
Kiwanis Build up Grades (BUG) Award
Congratulations go to our two recipients of the Term 2 Kiwanis BUG awards:
Sofia Edwards from 1A – Sugar Gums and Kristof Hoffman from 1C – Shining Gums. Both children:
Worked diligently
Worked consistently both at home and at school
Concentrated and always made an effort to try hard
Were persistent and never gave up
Set high standards for themselves.
Well done to Sofia and Kristof! I am most grateful to the Brighton Kiwanis Club which provides support
and encouragement to our children engaged in the Reading Recovery Program. The award has recognised
the effort and determination of children to do their very best with their work and have made commendable
progress.
Sporting Excellence
We had two teams and one individual representing Hampton Primary at the State Aerobics Championships

Schmid in 5/6A, Wattles, Kathleen Whipp in 5/6A, Wattles, Lauren Wilson in 5/6E, Wollemi, Evie We-
ber in 5/6A, Wattles, Bianca Poort in 5/6C, Eucalypts, Sophie Taylor in 5/6D, Sassafras. The Rockettes

The two teams have qualified to compete at the National School Aerobics Championships to be held over
three days in the Gold Coast during August. I extend my congratulations to all our competitors who dis-
played wonderful spirit and support for each other and outstanding talent.
Night of Notables
Our Year 4s have been exploring our early Australian history. To showcase their learning, a Night of Nota-
bles event has been planned for tomorrow – both in the afternoon and evening. Visitors will have the op-
portunity to meet and converse with various well known historical identities. Every child has made a
‘genuine artefact’ and these will be on display. Both sessions will be conducted in the BER building.
End of Term
This Friday is the last day of Term 2. I remind parents that school will conclude at 2.30pm. There will be
an assembly at 2pm for any interested community members. I wish all members of the school community
a safe and relaxing holiday and look forward to seeing everyone on the first day of Term 3 – Monday 14

Music News
What a wonderfully creative term in the music department! So many wonderfully
talented students learning instruments, performing, composing and most
importantly loving music. The 5/6 students have gone through the first set of
auditions with 90 students learning scripts and trying their luck. 34 students
received ‘call backs’! Well done for stepping outside your comfort zone and for
many…. ‘facing your fear’. I will announce our leads on Friday! Our production is
a modern day tale of Cinderella ‘RINDERCELLA’ and it will premiere at the
Kingston Arts Centre Oct 13th and 14th. Our logo for the show will also be
announced on Friday. I ask that all students look at the blog over the holidays and
learn their grade song and view the costume requirements.
Next term we will have 2 incursions for year prep -4 inclusive: Opera Australia
Cinderella August 13th and Musica Viva Akoustic Odyssey September 1st. Some
students will attend our WICKED excursion on August 20th.
Watch this space…. Rumour has it that ‘The Lion King’ is coming to Melbourne
next year and that HPS will be going!!! I have 3 piano positions with Pete Pascoe
for next term. See me if you are interested in your child learning the piano.
Drumline has 1 spot available for next term. No drums required to practice- just
earplugs and enthusiasm. This program is only available to year 3 -6 students due
to the dexterity required.
Semester 2 is a great time to start an instrument! At HPS you can learn: piano,
keyboard, guitar, sax, flute, clarinet, euphonium, violin, viola, trumpet, trombone,
percussion, drumkit, drumline.
Keep on enjoying music!

Incontinence in Children
This week is world continence week. Daytime wetting and soiling in children is actually more
common than most parents think. Most children are toilet trained by 5 years of age, but 20%
will still occasionally wet or soil their pants at some stage, and many several times per week.
Daytime wetting and soiling can be very embarrassing for school aged children. One third of
children who have daytime incontinence will also have bedwetting.
Children often have day time wetting because they have overactive bladders (caffeine drinks
such as cola can worsen this). Incomplete bladder emptying can also cause wetting or they can
actually have some structural problem of the urinary tract (this is not very common).
Emotional stress and urinary tract infections can also be a cause, especially in children who
have been previously dry and start wetting. Constipation can also be a big contributing factor
to daytime wetting and can be easily resolved once the constipation is treated. Some children
also get very busy and by the time they get to the toilet it can be too late, especially in their
early primary school years.
Soiling is less common (about 2% of children under 10 years) but does occur. 90% of these
children have constipation as an underlying cause. There are other rectal defects which can
cause problems but these are very rare.
Diet is very important. Your child should have plenty of fluids, especially water and lots of
fibre. They should also spend time sitting on the toilet without rushing.
It is not the child’s fault the wetting or soiling occurs. Often the child is not even aware the
soiling or wetting has happened and they can’t help it.
If you are concerned you should get professional help. There are several continence advice
centres available and the Royal Children’s Hospital web site has some valuable information.
See your GP if you have concerns.
If your child does have incontinence problems, be sure to send a change of clothes to school
each day so they can discreetly go and change as required.
Stay healthy, Susie and Jo (School Nurses)
LIFE EDUCATION SESSIONS
Last week the P-2 students participated in a 1hr Life Education session.
The children went into the Life Education van that was on site, they met
Harold the giraffe & developed their understandings of topics such as
nutrition, the human body, medicines and bullying.
The feedback from the students, teachers & parents has been very
positive. The Life Education program will continue in term 3 for the
students in years 3-6. Thankyou Fallon Page

2 CATS LOOKING FOR A HOME
We are looking to rehome our 2 cats due to a move overseas in the next 2 weeks.
1. Minnie, a chocolate Burmese - 2 1/2 years old. We call her "Minnie the Moocher"
because she's such a smoocher. Min would have to go to a home where she is the
only pet as, in addition to being the world's greatest cuddler, it seems she is also the
world's biggest bossy boots when it comes to other pets, and does not tolerate any
other pets in her space. Having said that, she happily tolerates kids and loves to be
curled up in someone's lap.
2. Cookie (aka Cookie Wookie) - CW is a 6 year old med hair mog. In the spirit of
openness and honesty, CW does not love cuddling but she does like company. She is
a bit skittish but does appear during the day for a chat and then likes to come in at
night for a chin scratch and to sit with us on the couch and, if allowed, to sleep on
the end of the bed. Probably best suited to a house with older kids but has coped
with other pets.
