This tutorial is based on the book titled “Technology Management Activities and Tools” published by Palgrave/Macmillan in 2016 (2nd Ed). The tutorial aims to introduce the interdisciplinary and multi-functional understanding of the technology management discipline
Patents are seldom used as a source of information by non technical people, even if they offer information that can be observed from a market perspective. After explaining how patents can be exploited with this aim, the workshop focuses on the information that can be extracted from patents and the implications and insight that they provide about the competitive environment, if read with a strategic eye.
The goal of this session is to show how build portfolios of products can be built that are based on expert knowledge and organisational data models, supporting strategic decision making and communication.
The Workshop will focus on the key features of a structured approach to the management of collaborative relationships (based on BS 11000) and will examine the importance of collaboration as a means of encouraging innovation in order to add value to outputs. It will be an interactive workshop featuring the innovative ‘Ice-breaker’ exercise.
The ability to communicate clearly and concisely is a critical skill. Visual methods and approaches are an enabler for more effective communication because their ultimate purpose, when designed and deployed appropriately, is to provide and convey insights. This seminar will outline the fundamental principles of designing visuals and provide practical guidance on how to apply them together with real examples from industry
Many organisations have invested in social management solutions to support the management of knowledge, communication and collaboration across the organisation. However, getting buy-in to change, beyond and below the executive board level, is still a challenge today and organisations must change their processes and business culture – the focus of this workshop.
Roadmapping is an effective method for supporting strategy and innovation, but firms often struggle to sustain and embed the process. This session aims to explore these challenges, with discussion primed by two short presentations.
Technological convergence is of growing interest to governments and other organisations around the world. In this session, challenges in management of technological convergence will be discussed, and a way forward suggested.

This session will introduce a practical framework and methodology for developing new management tools and processes from research, focusing particularly on key issues considered to ensure that the tools and processes are practical, useful and usable.
Government RTOs around the world are increasingly facing pressures to demonstrate more efficiency, impacts and return on public investment. Participants are invited to this interactive session with members of an international working group of RTOs to share insights on the emerging environment for RTOs, key issues, challenges, approaches taken and lessons learned including measures and metrics being used to assess performance.
Even world leading universities, which excel in invention, often struggle with innovation. In particular, scientific inventions of a radical, generic nature, with high potential economic and social value, can languish in the lab because of prolonged uncertainty and high commercialization costs. This session will consider scientist-entrepreneur and university level strategies for supporting commercialisation of research.
This workshop focuses on cross-institutional innovation strategies for collaborative R&D. By focusing on micro level activities and day-to-day challenges, the aim is to identify tangible tools and methods that fruitfully support collaborative R&D in cross-organizational innovation strategies, drawing on current real cases from a) collaborative engineering, b) industry 4.0 R&D and c) open and user innovation.
The session reviews the innovation landscape in China’s information and communications equipment sector. The aim is to facilitate a better understanding of how and why innovation matters in high-tech competition, with evidence from company experience in China (e.g. Huawei, Haier and China Electronics Corporation) and elsewhere.
The workshop makes use of an educative tool bringing together gamified elements of strategic roadmapping and sustainable value analysis tool to integrate all dimensions of sustainability (economic, social and environmental) into strategic innovation thinking.
Scenario-based strategic planning involves describing a finite number of alternate futures and the exogenous drivers that affect the future. By identifying these scenarios and structural elements of the drivers, a company’s R&D division can be structured to be successful regardless of which one future occurs. The seminar will focus on the process of scenario-based strategic planning and its utility in R&D planning.
