Let’s go back to the beginningof the Business & IP Centre

Page 5: From reference librarian to business advisor

The first thing we did was to ask what our customers wanted from us.

Page 6: From reference librarian to business advisor

The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th thing we did was to implement their requests.

Easier said than done!

Page 7: From reference librarian to business advisor

We started with this.

Free access to our collection of hard copy and online business information

Page 8: From reference librarian to business advisor

These, plus quite a few more…

Page 9: From reference librarian to business advisor

Added a helpful friendly knowledgeableinquiry service.

With business and Intellectual Property specialists on hand.

Page 10: From reference librarian to business advisor

Plus hands-on training for our range of databases

Page 11: From reference librarian to business advisor

But that wasn’t enough.

We had to train as workshop presenters…Which was quite a scary process

Page 12: From reference librarian to business advisor

But every day customers came to the enquiry desk and said…

“I just want to someone in private about my business idea / invention. Do you do that?”

The answer was “No, sorry, we are librarians, not business experts.”

…Not good enough

Page 13: From reference librarian to business advisor

So we had to train as Business Advisors.Even scarier stuff for librarians!

Page 14: From reference librarian to business advisor

At first we were terrified…

Page 15: From reference librarian to business advisor

But gradually we became more self-assured

And now it’s my

favourite part of the job

Page 16: From reference librarian to business advisor

Business Advice isn’t rocket science

•Confidentiality•Rapport•Non-judgmental•Good listeners•Referral knowledge•Never telling – helping decisions

Page 17: From reference librarian to business advisor

We adopted the ‘Lean’ approach to start-up

For our customers and for ourselves

Page 18: From reference librarian to business advisor

And the Business Model Canvas

The British Library is stuffed full of billions and billions of facts. But…

Page 20: From reference librarian to business advisor

We needed to get our customers to think why…

Why would someone chose their product or service?

Page 21: From reference librarian to business advisor

Too many had the ‘build it and they will come’ approach to marketing

Page 22: From reference librarian to business advisor

We recently celebrated our 10th anniversaryHere are some of my highlights…
