Design Competition Brief

Message from the CEO of Concrete Masonry Association of Australia and Think Brick Australia

Since2005theThinkBrickAwardshaveencouragedarchitectstorethinkbrickanddeliverprojectsthatrecognisethecontributionofarchitects,builders,bricklayersandmanufacturersinthisprocess.

In2008ThinkBrickincludedUrbanDesignintheHorburyHuntcategorycelebratingclaybrickinlandscapeandurbandesign.In2013thisexpandedtoincludeaseparatecategoryforclayandconcretemasonryinurbandesignwhichsawanarrayofcontemporaryentries.In2014thisawardwasrenamedinhonourofrenownedlandscapeartistBruceMackenzie.

EntrantsintheBruceMackenzieLandscapeAwardwillcompeteforthe$10,000cashprizeaswellasthechancetowintheGrandPrixAward.ThisprizewillrewardtheoverallwinneracrossallsixcategorieswithtwoBusinessClassticketstoVeniceBiennale2018.

In2015,wereceivedover300nominationsacrossallawardcategories.Everyyearfinalistsofthiscategorycontinuetohighlighttheunlimitedpossibilitiesofthehumblepaver.

Welookforwardtoseeinghowyourprojectshavetranscendedtheirpaverbeginningstoembodylandscapingperfection.

Who is Concrete Masonry Association of Australia?

TheConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustralia(CMAA)representstheconcretemasonrymanufacturersofAustralia.

TheCMAApublishestechnicalmanuals,datasheetsandsoftwarepackages,relatingtoconcreteblockwalling,concretepaving,permeablepavingandconcretemasonryretainingwalls,whicharefreetodownloadfromtheCMAAwebsite.TheAssociationalsoconductsworkshopsandcoursesandprovidesatechnicaladvisoryservicefortheconstructionindustryandotherusesofconcretemasonryproducts.

TheCMAAsupportstheconcretemasonryindustrybyprovidingtechnicalinformationandadvicetoarchitects,engineers,specifiersandeducators.TheCMAApublishestechnicalmanuals,datasheetsandsoftwarepackages,relatingtoconcreteblockwalling,concretepaving,permeablepavingandconcretemasonryretainingwalls,whicharepubliclyavailablefromtheirwebsite.TheAssociationalsoconductsworkshopcoursesandprovidesatechnicaladvisoryserviceformasonrydesignqueries.

ThinkBrickAustraliarepresentsAustralia’sclaybrickandpavermanufacturers.Ourpurposeistoensureclaybrickisrecognisedasapre-eminentbuildingmaterialbyleadingarchitects,developers,buildersandpropertyowners.Wearecommittedtopromotingexemplarybuildingandlandscapedesignusingclaybrickandpavers.

Wecreatenationalcampaignstoinspiredesigners,buildersandconsumerstouseclaybrickasacontemporary,versatileandinspiringbuildingmaterial.

Weprovidetechnicalsupporttoarchitects,engineers,builders,developersandpropertyowners.

Weundertakeresearchtoimproveandpromotetheusabilityandenvironmentalcredentialsofourproductsandworkwithgovernmentandregulatorsclosely.Wealsosetandmonitorstandardsforourmembersandusersofourproducts.

Competition overview

ThisawardwaspreviouslypartoftheHorburyHuntAward.In2013,thisawardevolvedtoincludeconcretemasonry.Wenamedtheawardin2014afterrenownedAustralianlandscapeartistBruceMackenzie.

BruceMackenziewasresponsibleforsomeofAustralia’sgreatestlandscapingprojectswhichincludeKu-ring-gaiandGlebeBicentennialParksandthelandscapeconstructionofSydney(Kingsford-Smith)InternationalAirport.

Spanningoverfivedecades,MackenziehasbeencommissionedtodesignnumerousrecognisedAustralianlandmarksandhaswonvariousdesignawards,whichhighlightshisgreatcontributiontothelandscapedesigncommunity.

Bruce Mackenzie Landscape Award Entry Criteria

General

Nominatedprojectmustmeetthefollowingcriteria:

• CompletedsinceJanuary2014andlocatedinAustralia.

• Thiscategoryincludesclaybrick,concretepaversandmasonryusedinlandscapeoroutdoorurbandesign.

• Recycledandreusedbrickscanbeusedinthiscategory.

• NotenteredintopreviousThinkBrickawards.

• Mustexemplifyarchitecturalinnovation,collaborationbetweenprojectteam,andshowahighlevelofskillandcraftsmanship.

• Entrymustbesubmittedbythe closing date of 5th May 2016.

• Onlyentriesthataresubmittedinfullandonline through our websitewillbeaccepted.

• Aprojectmaybeenteredinmultiplecategories,providingthatprojectmeetsthecriteriaofthespecificcategoryasoutlinedbelow.EachprojectmayonlybeenteredonceinthesameLandscapecategory.

Prize Theprizeisatrophyandcertificateforthewinningproject.Thewinningarchitectwillalsoreceive$10,000fortheprojectandthechancetowintheGrandPrixprize-twoBusinessClassticketstoVeniceBiennale2018.

Presentation of Awards

ThefinalistsandwinnersoftheBruceMackenzieLandscapeAward2016willbeannouncedandpresentedattheAwardsGalaDinner,whichwillbeheldinSydneyonFriday, 5th August 2016.Allsubmissionswillreceiveaninvitationfortwoforeachpartyinvolvedinthesubmission.Additionalticketstoattendtheeventareavailableforpurchase.

TheAwardsGalaDinnerincorporatestheHorburyHuntResidential,HorburyHuntCommercial,KevinBorlandMasonry-CommercialandResidential,BruceMackenzieLandscape,RoofTileExcellence,andRobinDodsTerracottaRoofcategories.TheGrandPrixprizewillbeawardedtothebestnominationamongstthesixcategories.

Post Competition Promotion

TheprojectswillbefeaturedontheThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustraliawebsites,socialmedia,publications,industrypresentations,roadshowsandTBA/CMAA/RTAAevents.

Media Demands

Participantsshouldbepreparedtomakethemselvesavailableforallmediaandpublicityrequestsontheirsubmittedprojects,includingbutnotlimitedtophone,emailorface-to-faceinterviewsforbroadcast,online,socialmedia,orprintpublication.

Terms and conditions

Photographssubmittedaspartofthisnominationmaybeexhibited,publishedandusedinmarketingactivitiesinthepromotionoftheAwardsandasacasestudyontheThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustraliawebsites.

ThewinningprojectandanyreceivingcommendationswillalsobepublishedinThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustralia’spublications.

Pleaseincludeanyphotographycreditsinyoursubmission.ThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustraliacannotbeheldresponsibleforpublicationofphotoswithnocreditifthisisnotprovided.

Latematerialwillnotbeaccepted.

Submissionofanentryimpliesconsentofallmembersoftheprojectteamtoenterthiscompetition.

TheJury’sdecisionisfinalandnocorrespondencewillbeenteredintoregardingthatdecision.

AllbuildingproductsusedinthesubmittedentriesmustcomplywiththeBuildingCodeofAustraliaandrelevantAustralianstandardsasmandatedbylegislation.Ifnecessary,participantswillbeaskedtodemonstrateproofofcompliance.

ThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustraliarespectyourprivacyandwillnotshareyourcontactinformationwithanythirdparty.

Assessment

Jury

AjuryconsistingofeminentarchitectsandindustryprofessionalswillbeappointedbyThinkBrickAustraliatojudgethesubmissionsandannounceawinner.The2016jurywillbeannouncedontheThinkBrickAustraliawebsite.

Eachjurorwillberequiredtoacknowledgepersonalorprofessionalconnectionswithanyoftheparticipantsortheiremployees.Inthecaseofsuchconflicts,theCompetitionAdvisorwilloverseeatransparentprocesswherebytheseconflictsarealleviated.AtthediscretionoftheCompetitionAdvisor,jurorswillbeaskedtotakenopartintheassessmentofaffectedentries.Aphotographerwillalsobepresentduringthejudgingtodocumenttheevent.

Submission Material and Format:

• ProjectStatement–includinginformationonwhatbricks/paverswereused,theteaminvolved(includingarchitect,masonrycontractor,brickmanufacturerandbuilder).Theprojectstatementmusthaveaminimumof50andamaximumof200words.

• Youmustsubmitfour(4)imagesoftheprojectthatbestrepresentthebrick/paverwork.

• Pleasesupplythesefourimagesashigh-resolutionjpeg,tifforpdffilesataminimumof300dpi,2000x2000pixels.

• Itispreferredthatyousubmitafloorplanoftheproject,but your entry will not be invalid if this is unavailable.

Lodgement

Yoursubmissionisdueby5 pm EST Thursday 5th May 2016,tobeuploadedonline through our website.
