FROM PASTOR SCHENKEL...
It’s a word that can often strike fear in our hearts. Most of us like what’s familiar and com-
fortable. Yet, change is inevitable in this fast paced, ever moving, broken world. With God on our side,
we need not fear change and new direction. As a matter of fact, our faith and relationship with Christ necessi-
tates change! Sometimes the change is in form and substance. Sometimes the change is in our perspective
and how we look at things. Regardless, as we look at things through the lens of our faith in Jesus, we can han-
dle change and turn it into a blessing.
As we are all aware, this year has brought some drastic change to our work and ministry here at St.
Paul’s. The closing of LuDay has brought an end to 47 years of Christian education on our campus. Societal
norms and attitudes towards organized religion have made it more challenging for us to reach out to families and
children. The ongoing fallout from widely publicized church scandals continues to undermine trust. However, the
assurance given to us in our Baptisms is that God always promises to bring life from death and hope from loss.
Some 700 years before Jesus came into the world in the manger in Bethlehem, the prophet Isaiah record-
ed God’s word of promise, “Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about
to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” (Is 43:18-19) The summer has offered us
several opportunities to explore future possibilities for the use of the education building in serving the communi-
ty. Discussions are ongoing with several parties of interest. As we move through the Fall into Winter, more clarity
will develop. Here are additional things that we can perceive that the Lord is doing here at St Paul’s:
And the one who was seated on the throne said,
“See, I am making all things new.” ~ Revelation 21:5
YDA PARTNERSHIP — In
November, St. Paul’s will be
partnering with the YDA –
Youth Directions & Alternatives
(http://ydaonline.org). YDA is a private, non-profit
community and youth agency serving youth and
their families in the school districts of Elwood, Har-
borfields, and Northport/East Northport. YDA is for
all youth and served 2500 youth last year. They offer
afterschool programs, mentoring, summer activities,
and other services to help guide and direct young
people. YDA will be using the Youth Building and
the surrounding playgrounds and courts. This is
truly an answer to prayer for us here at St Paul’s.
For years, we have been struggling with the question
of how we can best reach out and serve the youth of
our community. Now, God has provided a powerful
and exciting answer.
SUNDAY SCHOOL — Over
the summer extensive renova-
tion and redecorating has
been provided to our Sunday
School classrooms by some of our local Girl
Scouts as well as members of our staff and
other volunteers. The countless hours of work
have revitalized the space making it crisp,
clean, and welcoming. At the same time, we
scoured countless Sunday School programs
and curricula to find something fresh and in-
teractive. We have worked very hard over the
past few years to make our children’s programs
less like school and more hands on and stimu-
lating. With the popularity of superheroes in
our world today, we thought it would be cool to
show our Sunday School children some
“superheroes of the Bible” and how they can be
“superheroes for God” in their own lives!
C hange.
My office was renovated so that it will be much warmer in the winter. Stop by and take a look! We also
welcomed Pam Marsden as our new bookkeeper. Her office hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thurs-
day from 8AM to 1PM.
It is truly a blessing to be called together as a family of faith here at St Paul’s and it is
exciting to see how God is working through us to fulfill His promise when He says,
"See, I am making all things new."
How do YOU see the World?
INCREDIBLES 2 hit theaters this summer and inspired us to release some
of our own superheroes! Our new Sunday School curriculum covers the
biblical superheroes! While you’re in church, your children will be swept
away to meet Arkman, create a Jesse tree, work with our confirmation
kids, learn by giving back through service opportunities and more!
There is no fee for this program. If a friend would like to come with their
parent/guardian, they are welcome to attend a class and see if it’s right for
their family.

"Sing a new song to the Lord, who has done marvelous things." (Psalm
98). Come join St. Paul's Choir in song! Our Choir members are very
enthusiastic, love to sing, and are looking forward to new singers joining
the group. Choir Members attend rehearsals Thursday evenings at 7PM
in the Choir Room. The Choir sings most Sundays at the 10AM services
as well as special holiday evening services during the year. Interested
persons are invited to join the Choir at their rehearsal on Thursday even-
ing, September 13, 2018, at 7PM. Please contact any Choir member or
email me, [email protected] for more information.
INTRODUCING...THE YOUTH CHOIR AT ST. PAUL’S!
Fun through Singing
Quality musical training - tone production, diction, harmony, sight reading and learning the music of a varied
repertoire with everything from Bach to John Williams. We will be a vital part of our church's programs. We
will sing once a month at the 10:00AM service, Christmas carol to our shut-ins and take part in the Sunday
School Christmas Message in December. We will also have some special choir parties -- just for us! If you’re
interested and would like more information, please email Elaine Gates at [email protected] or sign up in
the narthex. We are open to all ages. All that's required is a desire to sing!
ST. PAUL’S
YOUTH CHOIR
WE WARMLY WELCOME PAM MARSDEN, OUR NEW BOOKKEEPER!
This summer we welcomed Pam Marsden into our St. Paul’s family as our new Bookkeeper. Pam comes to us
with many years of experience in financial matters. She formerly served for ten years as
the bookkeeper for Trinity Episcopal Church in Northport. Pam and her husband Bill
live in Northport. She enjoys family time, camping, and caring for her six grandchildren.
Pam is in the church office on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8am to 1pm.
Come by and introduce yourself and welcome Pam to our church family!
Did you have a special event this year like a Milestone birthday or Anniversary,
Wedding, Birth of a child or Grandchild, Confirmation, First Communion, Bap-
tism? Want to memorialize a loved one lost? Just want to say thanks to God for
your many blessings? Why not consider purchasing an engraved brick, either
4x8 or 8x8, for the Commemorative Garden? Need ideas on what to have en-
graved? Take a walk through the Garden and take a look at all the special bricks
which have already been placed! Even though we only place orders twice a year,
you can submit them to us at any time and we will order your brick with the next
order placed. Order forms can be found in the church office or in the Narthex.
SUMMER FUN
How did you enjoy your Summer? No doubt there was HEAT involved with all your activities. Here at St. Paul’s your Buildings and Grounds Committee kept quite busy.
Redecorating took place in Pastor Schenkel’s office. Also in the adjacent Sunday School room, part of which
was included in the Girl Scout Gold Award. Insulation, sheetrock, moldings and new windows were installed.
A new fresh coat of paint was applied. Also electrical wiring was updated. A very busy project indeed.
Work is being done in the Commemorative Garden. The window well covers are being replaced. The circular
wall was painted. Existing lamp posts have new light fixtures and additional lamp posts have been installed
along the Vernon Valley Road side of our property.
Electronix Systems installed a central station monitoring system in the Church office. This provides security for those working in the office.
The summer tropical rain storms have again found a way to enter the Choir Room. A remedy for this is being
looked into and will be taken care of soon.
A rather large branch from a tree fell into the side parking lot. The tree from which it fell has been removed.
The Gym and the Stage areas in the Youth Building have been refinished.
We have a large and beautiful Campus to be proud of. There always seems to be an area which needs some
TLC. We would appreciate any time and care you may be able to give to assist us with our projects.
VISITATION
Members of St Paul’s visit and bring communion, in the name of Jesus Christ, to our homebound and others
who are unable to attend worship regularly. Visitors make contact by phone or visit at least once a month
and bring an assurance of God's presence, care and peace. If you or a loved one would appreciate a visit,
please call the church office at 631.754.4422.
COUNSELING RESOURCE AVAILABLE FOR MEMBERS
The Congregation Council leaders approved participation as an association church of the Lutheran Counsel-
ing Center. This excellent program makes it possible for St. Paul’s members to get professional faith-based
therapy at a reduced rate. The center also provides quality mental health seminars for youth groups, parents
and senior groups. Cost to the congregation is $600.00 for the year. The Lutheran Counseling Center will see
any member, couple or family of St. Paul’s for a maximum of four visits for a nominal fee of $25.00 per ses-
sion. The standard fee ranges from $65.00-$80.00 a session. For further inquiries, please call 516.741.0994.

gregation who is trained to listen, care, encourage, pray, and walk alongside you during
