1. Why did colonists consider George Washington a hero, even after he was defeated by the French?

He was willing to stand up to the French even though he was defeated.


2. Why did the rivalry between the British and French grow?

They were competing over the Ohio River Valley because the English wanted farm land and the French wanted fur trapping territory.


3. Why did the Albany Plan of Union fail?

The Albany Plan of Union proposed the colonies get together to defend each other from the French. It failed because none of the colonies were willing to give up their power.

France and Spain, Fighting the British

When the countries that owned them went to war, the colonies had to go to war too.

Fort Duquesne is in western PA.

The French controlled it.

The tactics of wearing bright jackets, marching in lines and moving slowly through the woods due to cutting down trees and building bridges did not fit the wilderness style of fighting necessary in the colonies.

Quebec is the Capital of Canada.

It was important because it was the capital of the French territory.

He decided to send the colonists all of the soldiers, weapons and supplies they needed in order to win the war, even though it was going to cost A LOT.

Fort Duquesne became Fort Pitt which became Pittsburgh.

It was named after William Pitt who made winning the war possible.

Winner = British/England

The Spanish helped the French b/c their kings were related.

They had to give up Florida to the British.

They lost Canada to the British.

They willingly gave up Louisiana to the Spanish.

This means no more North America for them.


15. Which group did the Native Americans prefer at the start of the French and Indian War? Why?

The Native Americans preferred the French because they didn’t try to throw them off the land-they hunted and fished together.


16. What was the significance/importance of the sneaky Treaty of Fontainebleau?

The treaty gave Louisiana to Spain in secret before the end of the war.

This cheated the British out of the Louisiana territory.


17. What was the name of the treaty that officially ends the French and Indian War?

The Treaty of Paris.

The Mississippi River

Spain controlled everything to the left and south of the Mississippi River.

He was an army officer. He was sent to PA to throw the French out of English territory at Fort Duquesne.
