I am so very happy (and honored) to have been asked to serve as this summer’s minister at MUF, especially at this exciting time as we begin the long anticipated physical changes to our grounds - and soon create life serving structural changes to our mansion. May all of these changes

facilitate our spiritual deepening and broadening outreach in these oppositional, contradictory times. May this summer begin!

Yes, may it commence. “Summertime, and the living is easy!” I remember hearing Louis Armstrong sing those words at my college which was in those days segregated. He also sang “It’s a Wonderful World” though he couldn’t get a room to stay in that small college town where there was no lodging for a black man.

Oh, life’s contradictions.

Just this afternoon I talked with a friend who has been a heroic epitome of health consciousness for as long as I have known him. He can hardly talk now for the excruciating physical pain that’s steadily worsening for the five weeks he’s had the worse case of shingles his doctor has ever seen.

And then I went for a swim. In the neighborhood pool, I laughed watching children gleefully tumble down the tall water slide. Then I had some ice cream and came home for a nap.

My heart aches: such pain and pleasure, only a few minutes apart.

I remembered W.H. Auden’s poem: “About suffering they were never wrong, The Old Masters; how well

they understood its human position; how it takes place while someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along;”

The excruciating and the everyday - they’re only one breath away. As long as we can breathe, may we breathe in calm and breathe out caring.

May we who love the summer enjoy its warmth and be able to accept the winter that will follow. May those who love winter (I know there are some, even if I can’t understand why), find respite in their summer’s duress, and hope in a forthcoming winter’s thrilling chill.

For here we have it, summer and winter, the physical and the spiritual, social progress and environmental collapse, hope and fear, the personal and the political… May our faith grow large enough to hold it all. May it be decorated by paradoxes and opposites.

As you trudge to MUF from the alternative parking at The Morris Museum, may your heart be enticed by the possibility of a growing awareness and ensuing compassion that embraces all conditions, all people and all times.

May our faith be in our building and the spirit that lives within it, the courage to act for matters of justice and peace and the ability to tolerate what we cannot actually change.

“The best of times?” “the “worst of times?” It’s hard to know. Perhaps they are the same, only depending upon your perspective and how wide you can open your heart.

Yours in a liberating faith, Allen

Morristown Unitarian Fellowship

Hello from the Appalachian Trail! My board service was shortened slightly because of my departure in April with the hopes of attempting and completing a thru hike. The very first board article I wrote, spoke about

adventure. I talked about how serving on the board would be a personal and spiritual adventure just as hiking the Appalachian trail is, both of which I hoped to achieve. How lucky am I to have lived into both of my adventures? The last 3 years on the board have truly been an adventure that I have been proud to be apart of. When I first came aboard, we were just starting to believe that we may be sued by the neighbors for our construction process, which eventually happened. The board went on a jarring journey through legality. Personally, I served on the litigation committee and suddenly became involved in this lawsuit, which I was not anticipating when agreeing to serve on the board. I was so impressed by how the board handled this extremely stressful time in our history AND future. Everyone was making representative decisions of all of our congregants and processes and decisions were labored and stressed over. My second year on the board was also consumed by the litigation, but was also filled with celebrations as we neared and then settled with the neighbors. I struggled with the amount of money spent to defend our rights in what felt like a frivolous lawsuit brought on by 10 individuals, but then I realized we had

indeed invested the money in our future. We will be here longer than any of our neighbors! We will continue to be a beacon for those looking for a liberal faith. My third year has been an attempt to revamp, organize, and make meaningful sense out of the network structure. Assisted by Elizabeth Freese as well as the committee leaders, we were able to do just that. While I am sure, the structure and meeting process will continue to change, we at least have an outline of how our committees relate to each other as well as a living directory of leadership that can be updated annually and as needed. We also started a 'building on-boarding' process to assist new leaders to feel comfortable in our building. This past year also saw the start of our fiduciary journey of raising the funds for the Capital Campaign project. The fellowship is on an adventure that I hope you don't miss out on. This place, will become and continue to be, a place that welcomes others, has conversations regarding dismantling white supremacy, and works for both equality and equity across humanity. We will have a better ability to do so in the next few years with our new fellowship hall, bathrooms, kitchen, and parking lot. I will be happy to return in the fall to walk across our new parking lot with my new wife, Candice, and her Seeing Eye dog, Sheba, no longer as a board member but as a congregant. And I will be glad to have served for you and with you on these adventures. Until next time!

Parking Lot Lessons: Our building and grounds are in the midst of big construction projects. Together, we are learning how to adapt and remain nurture patience for each other as our footprint changes.

There will be inconveniences in the weeks ahead. The board, Staff, and Project Leaders are doing their very best to mitigate inconveniences as they arise.

Deeds Well Done - our thanks go to:

A big thank you to all the people who lent their sweat equity to the hard, dirty work of ripping up floors/rugs in preparation for the floor renovation, among them, Steve Parker, Janet Horst, Ryan Gorman, Paul Davis, Paul Snellgrove and Steve Gruber. A song and dance of thanks to Beat Barbalan and Jim LeSalla for lending their musical talents to create a festive atmosphere at the outdoor service and annual picnic at Lewis Morris Park on June 9. And thank you to everyone who helped make the picnic happen, bringing and setting up food, signs, activities and more, and cleaning up afterward. It was a beautiful day!

On June 2, you took a leap of faith with the Board and approved a budget for 2019-2020 that include s$468,000 in pledges even though we had only $420,000 pledged ($48,000 shortfall).

UPDATE: Pledge increases and new pledges are still coming in. If you can pledge or add to your existing pledge, please do so now!

As of July 11 we had $436,518 pledged ($31,482 shortfall). We also have two new fundraisers that are anticipated to bring in $2000 ($29,482 shortfall): Stearns and Beth Wilson will reprise their Cabaret Night at Beth’s house TWICE over the coming year, for $50 per ticket, minimum!!! Watch this space for the dates & details…

• The Board is holding a special Working Meeting on July 24 to hammer out a plan to get the rest. • Please send your ideas to Chris Kirk [email protected], or via REALM, or to any other Board member, before JULY 23 at 5:00 pm!

REMINDER: While we drive to close this gap, remember that the $468,000 already is a spare and bony budget. We’d love to restore as much of what we cut from the Budget based on the $512,000 original pledge target as we can so – did we mention we need your ideas?!?

THANK YOU for your generosity, resilience, fellowship and Faith.

- Shari Loe, President of the Board of Trustees

We are again on track with pledges, collecting 72% of this yearin the first 9 months of the pledge year ($332k of the $459k goal). Keep up the good work.

Looking ahead we may have a Buildings and Ground item to report as our HVAC system is having issues that need further investigation and attention. Stay tuned to our next monthmore about it.

Elbjorg Berkenkamp -Thank you Stearns for bringing the most fantastic Cabaret to the Fellowship, we hope there is an encore! Steve Rice-After 45 rewarding years, I’ve finally retired! It’s been a long and winding road. No fear; we’re not moving away! Drew Hayes and Janine Torsiello Drew’s mother Genevieve, passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon at the age of 94. She lived a good life and is now at rest after a long battle with dementia. She leaves 3 sons, 9 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Please hold Drew and all who loved her in your prayers as they walk through the final journey of putting her to rest.

Tom McGuinness’ daughter is here from California to celebrate Tom’s 87th birthday this weekend. Diane Koslow-My husband Frank Koslow, a longtime member, has been suffering with severe Parkinson’s for the last five years. He has had a live-in aide for at least four years mostly at home in New Jersey and for the last year with his son in Massachusetts. His condition has deteriorated to the point where he needs

to be in a nursing home, and he has chosen to return to New Jersey to be near family and friends. I am now in the process of looking for a nearby nursing home for him. Anne Gaynor -In sincere appreciation a special thank you goes out to Katharina Pietraszek. Katharina has been solely responsible for the formation and distribution of the monthly newsletter, both digitally and hard copy. Without the many hours of volunteering needed for this monthly project a very valuable means of communication among the Fellowship community would be missing. Tish Hamilton-My mother, Mary Hamilton, won the gold medal in the Senior Games 5K road race in

Albuquerque in the age group of 90-94. She is 91 . Vicki Hicks—My mother passed away a year ago yesterday at the age of 97. In the Chinese tradition she was awarded three more years. One from heaven, one from earth, and one for her own merit. Well, she always told us she’ll live to 100, and she made it.

BUTN

Bring Us Together Now

Political Communication Skills Group, led by Bob Calafiore, first Monday each month, 7 pm. The BUTN group will explore the skills required to listen deeply, speak thoughtfully and have constructive conversations around divisive issues. We will build on best practices and learnings of Right Relations, Nonviolent Communication and, as appropriate, teamwork with other organizations in our community such as Better Angels.

For information or to confirm meeting time and place please contact Bob Calafiore at:

For the past couple of weeks we have been experimenting with a concept called in other faith traditions a “pray-ground”. A space where children can feel more

at home in our worship services, can be closer to the action so they can see what is going on, sitting with their families and volunteers so we can teach them how we worship as UUs. Many other faiths have been using this concept for a few years but we are not sure if “pray-ground” is the right term for us. Let us know what you think about the name and what other ideas you have! It is exciting to see our families come with joy to summer services, with three third generation UU families and others, we counted over 20 people directly served by the space in the past two weeks alone, not to mention those who enjoy sharing space with children. We are still experimenting with our physical space and so you will see the “pray-ground” move around a little so we can get the best acoustics so we can all hear what is going on, and the best layout so our families can start to learn how we worship as a community.

We hope that just as we read to infants who cannot understand but grow a love of reading from an early age, that we too will grow a love of communal worship within our youngest members.

If anyone is interested in being an active role model for the children please get in touch, having non familial congregational members get to know and support our children is the most effective way to grow lifelong worshippers. For more information about supporting children in worship and how they support us take a look at this website, it will require some “UU translation” from the Christian language: http://sacraparental.com/2016/06/11/12-reasons-welcome-kids-church-tips-actually/

We are keeping our eyes and ears open to hear feedback about how we can continue to learn together and create a truly multigenerational worship experience for us all. Childcare is still available all summer, and the library is also open for use when people need a break from the sanctuary as usual. If you have anything you would like us to know about this adventure we are looking for feedback, please email [email protected] or [email protected] and don’t forget those name suggestions! KIVA Micro-Loan Update Kiva is a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Kiva works with microfinance institutions on five continents to provide loans to people without access to traditional banking systems. Once a loan is repaid the funds are used to make new loans. In May 2011, the Fellowship initiated a series of micro-loans with $1,165 raised through a dedicated collection. Over the last 8 years this investment has provided $13,550 in loans to 116 individuals in 38 countries. In the first 6 months of 2019 loan repayments of $627enabled the Fellowship to make 3 new loans. All three loans went to women with businesses in Nicaragua. These loans will enable 2 women to expand their individual businesses to include the sale of fresh and prepared foods. The third loan enabled a mother of three young children to expand her business adding personal use and home products to sell in her inventory.

Environmental Justice Task Force The earth is facing a climate crisis.

What has been our Governor’s response? Answer: The release of an Energy Master Plan (EMP), a 100+ page roadmap to a greener and healthier future. By reading the fine print, members of our UU Environmental Justice Task Force have learned that the EMP would actually promote more use of fossil fuels by redefining clean energy as carbon neutral energy. In other words, you can use any type of fossil fuel as long as you are using carbon capture and sequestration, or using carbon offsets. This is a critical time, and we are preparing comments for the 6 public hearings that will be held throughout the state. Our voices can make a real difference. Please read our June/July newsletter at uufaithaction.org/blog for updates and recommendations on how you can help.

Have you noticed the stainless steel collection cans for fruit and veggie scraps, as well as tea bags, that the Green Earth Ministry has provided during Sunday coffee hours? Thanks to those who have made "donations" so far. Mother Nature will help us create delicious compost for future plantings on our Fellowship property, while we reduce our contribution to incinerators and overburdened landfills. A win-win!

So THE PURPOSE of our service auction is to raise money and build community. In 2018, we raised almost $40,000 by having members like you sponsor events others will want to attend. And although the auction isn’t until November 2, it’s time for both our seasoned members, and our newest members to start thinking about ideas for the fall.

So… Have YOU been wondering… what’s this service auction thing that everyone is talking about? And how would you be able to contribute? … if so, this column is for you!

Well, you’ve already read about building community and raising money. I’d like to tell you that the funds raised are used to pay for extras like cream and sugar for our Sunday Coffee Hour, but they’re not. They are currently used to bridge the gap in our Operating Budget … which makes your participation all the more important.

SO WHAT KIND OF THINGS CAN BE AUCTIONED? Our members and friends offer events and services for and with each other. How do you know what to offer? What you enjoy or what do you think others might enjoy. This could be based on a hobby or a talent….and everyone has a hobby or talent….or TWO!!! So if it’s throwing a party for

adults or families…or organizing a hike for families

or just adults, everybody can think and do something that’s fun for our congregants.

Still having trouble imagining what you might offer? How do you like to spend your free time?

Do you like to socialize with friends? Plan a dinner. Plan an evening of games or cards. Large group events may be held at the Fellowship with approval.

Do you like to cook, bake, or grill? Donate home-baked goods, soup, or a meal.

Hike, bike, canoe? Plan an excursion. It could be an hour or a full day.

Do you have a hobby? Offer lessons. Donate a hand-made item.

Are you handy? Paint a room. Garden. Offer repair services.

Do you own a vacation home or boat? Donate a week at your home or a day out together on the water.

Bottom Line? Offer something that you enjoy and have others from our community enjoy it with you!

In the Fall, you’ll see information on how to submit ideas. For now, start thinking and if you have questions or want to explore an idea, contact the Service Auction Idea Counselor: Dan Cohen.

Our Father’s Day Celebration at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum. Don Preziosi, Eric West, Beat Barblan, and Barbara Stasiak led a powerful service.

We had a blast at our annual picnic at Morris Lewis Park on

June 9th.

Bob Scott and David Snedden gener-ously take time to capture our smiles along the way. Thank you for these

lovely pictures!

Sunday Service July 2019 July 7th at 10am “Liberating Lost Souls: Tending a Local Wound of White Supremacy” - Led by Rev. Karen G. Johnston July 14th at 10am “Guard Your Aspirations” - Led by Rev. Allen Wells How many we keep an open heart amidst today’s world of dissatisfactions? One of the things we can do—and it lies within the power of each of us—is to re-affirm our aspirations but free ourselves from their outcomes. July 21st at 10am “Why I Wake Early” - Led by Tish Hamilton, Paige Oszmanski, Chris Kirk, Frank and Frank Pecca. Music by Beth Wilson Even if we don’t love early mornings, we all have to get up eventually. Inspired by the poet-ry of the late Mary Oliver, who celebrated the solace, mystery, and spirituality of morning in the natural world we will ask “how can we start the day in happiness, in Kindness?” July 28th at 10am “The 11th Commandment: Honor Thy Children” -Led by Diana West This service will address the ethical equivalency of respecting children as much as parents/elders particularly in the context of the US border incarcerations of children.

Sunday Services August, 2019 August 4th at 10am “Be Here Now, WOW!” -Led by Rev. Allen Wells What it can mean to be fully present to our experience, whether of pleasure or pain, especially in these troubled times, and to avail ourselves of a disguised source of enlighten-ment that lies right at our doorstep, August 11th at 10am “Laugh” - Led by Stearns Matthews August 11th at 10am “Mind Your Media” -Led by Rev. Allen Wells How may we relate to media in general and social media in particular to transform our lives for the better and not for the worse? August 25th at 10am “Connect, Serve, Inspire : Reflections from Fellowship Camp” -Led by Liz Roper This year our Fellowship campers are focusing on these goals in their half week camp. Their camp culminates in inspiring you all with a service they will put together during the week. Our 2nd-7th graders and their high school counselors are excited to be worship creators and share their wisdom and insight on this Sunday morning
