Winter 2017/18 Kislev/Tevet/Shevat/Adar 5778 Volume 22, Issue 1 From Our Spiritual Leader Cantor Henry Shapiro People of the Book Jews are called sometimes, “The People of the Book”. This refers to the Hebrew Bible of course. More often than not, we ourselves call it the Five Books of Moses or sometimes, the Chumash. Chumash coming from the Hebrew chamisha, meaning five. The books don’t have an author per se, you might think of them almost as chapters. The 5 books each have different general themes, which include narrative, laws, customs, teachings, and other information. Since they cover more ideas and span more time than any modern book would do, 5 books is as good a descriptor as any. It also implies that the Hebrew Bible was compiled of a number of individual scrolls. We most often refer to the Chumash as the Torah. The Hebrew root of word Torah is to teach, which is perfectly appropriate. It also is the same root for morah or moreh, the Hebrew word for teacher. The actual term for a whole Torah scroll is sefer Torah. Sefer meaning scroll. Every ‘book’ in the Torah is separated by a gap of a couple of inches. Such is the case between the 1st book we recently finished, Genesis, and the second book we are currently reading, Exodus. I was thinking of all this when we started the book of Exodus because we just got back one of our Torah from repairs in NY. We’ve been talking about repairing it for a couple of years now and I was happy to have it back ‘in the fold’ and ready to use. On holidays and festivals the Torah will most often require reading in two different and sometimes distant sections, hence at least two Torahs are needed. Not only the Torah itself was repaired but the Torah ark was just renovated. Thanks to all who helped make this happen. Our repair odyssey made me wonder about older Torahs and I did an online search. While there is a fragment found in Ein Geri that is some 1500 years old, a recent discovery in Italy found the oldest known scroll.

An Italian expert in Hebrew manuscripts says he has found the oldest known complete Torah scroll, a sheepskin document dating from 1155-1225 - from nationalgeographic.com This 800 year old Torah (open to the Song of the Sea) while slightly different calligraphy than a more recent written Torah, is still eminently readable - HS

Walt’s Yellow Peas & Root Vegetable Soup I got this recipe from Walt Mahovlich, the Cleveland musician(clarinet and accordion). Another good cold weather winter soup I’m fortifying myself with this season. Pea soup 1 -2 chopped onions (or leeks) 2 tbsp oil 2 chopped turnips 2 parsnips chopped 2 -4 carrots chopped a hand full of chopped lovage (or if you can't get it, use celery with the leaves) 1 lb split yellow peas (rinsed) Season with fresh ground black pepper a good spoonful of smoke paprika 1tbsp of powdered mustard Sauté onions then cover with cold water. Bring to a boil, then simmer until peas fall apart. THEN and only then, add some peeled, chopped tomatoes, if desired. I used a small can of crushed tomatoes. Take some of the soup out and puree, or pass through the strainer, if you like, to thicken it (optional). Add a good handful of chopped parsley. Adjust salt and pepper to taste. Allow it to slowly simmer about another 15 min.

From the President’s Desk………………………….Robert E. Korfin For well over a year, I’ve been telling you about the need to getting our Torahs repaired. As this is the 1st Scribe of the New Year, I thought this would be a good time to give you the details. Our Torahs were sent off to the faraway land of Brooklyn, New York. Of the two Torahs, one was found to be in such poor condition, that it was not worth the high cost to repair it. That Torah will be respectfully and observantly buried in New York. The other Torah was repaired and has been returned to Parkway. We have been using it every Saturday morning since it’s return. The cost of Torah repairs is high, but I will get to that in a minute. While the Torah’s were out of the ark, it was discovered that there had been some water damage. If you didn’t know, our ark was built with the outside wall of the building. It has a separate roof and has been open to changes in humidity from season to season. We hired a contractor who replaced the old roof, and added insulation and special paint for the inside of the ark. When you come to shul you will see the remodeled ark and the newly repaired Torah. I mentioned the cost above; so how did we finance these repairs. A very large contribution came from one of our members who wishes to remain unnamed. Another contribution is a bit more complicated. There is a wonderful man who is not an official member of Parkway but he comes to High Holiday Services every single year. His name is Jerry Silverstein and he is one of the earliest people to arrive every year. He has mentioned. over the years, to his Brother and Sister-in-Law in Milwaukee, the kind of Chamish shul we are as well as our need to complete these repairs. To make a long story short, we received a most generous contribution from Mr. and Mrs. Cary Silverstein. That contribution has been used for the Torah repairs. Many thanks to you for their continued support of our beloved Parkway Jewish Center. We thank both the named and unnamed people who step up and do whatever is needed for the good of all of us at PJC. Although we are well into February, I want to again wish all of you a happy, healthy and peaceful 2018. Come to shul and then we will talk again….
