Congregational Luncheon

Sunday, July 14 Help the Session envision the future staffing needs of our

church. Should we hire another Director of Christian Education?

Or should Providence focus on hiring a full time Youth Director? Should we hire someone skilled in young adult ministry to attract

young families? Or should we not hire anyone to fill the vacant Director of Christian Education position? And if we do decide to hire someone, is this to be a part time or full time position,

Mission Outreach Evangelism

Detention Ministry Perseverance, respect and love were the

topics we chose to discuss with the 44 detainees

who gathered in the gym for our June meeting. Dewey chose our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, who never gave up despite failures, as

an example of perseverance. With Stephanie’s assistance the kids made a patriotic banner to hang at the Veterans Hospital for Flag Day. I

used Father’s Day to speak about respect and love in the important relationships in our lives.

Robert Harnly joined us this visit and helped

Debbie Buschert record prayer requests from each of the kids.

Please remember these young people in your

prayers. Louann Bielmann

Judeo Christian Outreach Friday, August 9 is our next opportunity to

serve at the Homeless Shelter in Virginia Beach.. The menu and the signup sheet will be on the Mission and Outreach bulletin board in

July. Put your name by the items you can bring and indicate if you would like to go to the shelter and serve the meal. Thank you for your

continued support of this ministry. Howard and Stephanie Boose

Partners in Education The school year is over and

t h e m a n y w o n d e r f u l

Providence volunteers who offered their time and energy at Fairfield Elementary can

relax for a couple of months. The staff and students will be looking forward to their return in the fall to help with

the Reading Café and Lunch Buddy programs. Thank you, and if you have not done so before, consider joining us in one or

both of these programs! If you are interested in participating speak to Dianne Stockmeier at church or call her at 547-0091.

Farm Fresh receipts have been tallied and Providence has contributed $19,307 which

equates to $193 worth of school supplies. Add to that almost 500 Box Tops (worth 10 cents each or $50) and 600 soup label points. These

contributions that are so easy to save make a big difference. Please continue to save Box Tops for collection starting again in

September. Thank you one and all.

St. Columba Ministry School Supplies for St Columba Ministries will be

collected in July and August. The Presbyterian Women will take school supplies to

distribute to low-income families before school begins. Items needed include back

packs, pencils, pens, wide-rule paper, scissors, crayons,

rulers, glue, folders, school boxes, etc. Place supplies in the boxes in the narthex and

foyer by August 18th. Hit the sales this summer and pick up some supplies for children in need!

ODU Meals Thank you Once again, the ODU students and I thank

you so much for stepping up to the plate this

year to provide monthly meals for this special ministry. Enjoy the summer before we refill the hungry students in the fall.

Providence Women’s Ministries

I t’s Summer….Yeah!!! Ladies, I am so proud to be one of

the Women of Providence. We continue to be involved in several ministries and from others we take a

summer rest. Our Beach Bag Ministry has ended for the school year after donating 233 bags of food to

Fairfield Elementary children helping keep tummies full over weekends. Thank you for over 2,400 donated food items and help assembling and delivering the

bags. Providence played a significant role in making this mission a great success for children and families

in our community. The Providence bus took our largest group of women to the Presbyterian Women’s 25th Synod of Mid-Atlantic Summer Gathering

at Massanetta Springs June 14-16. Our gathering included workshops, beautiful scenery and a tour of Sunnyside Retirement

Community where our former Providence friends, Pat & Rich Armstrong live. We enjoyed new friendships as well as time to relax and have fun. If you want more details, talk to one of our ladies who attended: Barbara Bishop,

Stephanie Boose, Cecilia Daley, Linda Dean, Stella Fitzgerald, Abbit Harvey, Carol Hickman, Karen Moore, Cathy Polychroni, Cathy Reese, Jennifer Rhode, Sandra Rushton and Donna

Zamorski.

Women, Come one… Come All…. for some fun in the sun.

Mark your calendars…August 10 (rain date: Aug 17th)

Whether you want to relax in the shade or sun, read a book, socialize or float

in the pool; pack your bag and join us for a ladies’ outing. No husbands, children or pets – just women having some fun, food and fellowship! Watch the PW bulletin board for more information and to sign-up.

Providence Women send our thoughts and prayers to the families of Virginia Wooddell and Edith Hill both of whom will be dearly missed. May they be having a reunion in heaven!

We will continue our involvement in mission activity during July and August. See page 3 for information about the St. Columba School Supplies Ministry. Check out the next page and

set aside Saturday, July 13, 9:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a Mission Crafts and Hobby Fun Day. Wishing you a healthy and fun summer!

God Bless you All!

Providence Post Music Notes from Valetta...

During the Sundays of June and July, when the choir takes a well-deserved break from their

weekly Wednesday rehearsals, we will have a "summer choir" in the chancel, a pick-up choir made up of any youth and adults who would like to sing! We will meet in the choir room about

20 minutes before worship to go over the hymns and prepare a simple introit, and we'll have special music (solos, duets, etc.) at the anthem time. I hope you'll consider singing with us on the Sundays you're in town. Everyone is welcome, and if you've ever considered being in the

choir, this is a perfect time to "test the waters." Every summer I look forward to the opportunity to "charge up my battery" at the annual

Virginia Wesleyan College Sacred Music Summer Conference the last week of July. I have been going to this week-long conference for over fifteen years, and every year, in addition

to catching up with my church musician friends, I come away with new ideas and new music. If my new knee cooperates, I plan on doing it again! Several evening events are open to the

public, and if you're able to attend, I know you would enjoy them. Here are the details:

Monday, July 22, 7:30 p.m. at Monumental Chapel on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan

College - Worship in the Taize Style of Christian Prayer

Wednesday, July 24, 7:30 p.m. at Great Bridge Presbyterian Church, 333 Cedar Road,

Chesapeake – To Love Our God, festival worship with Mark Hayes conducting the 100-voice

Wesleyan Worship Choir, the Great Bridge Baptist Handbell Choir, and Friends of the Groom

theatre troupe.

Thursday, July 25, 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 300 36th St., Virginia Beach –

The Journey: Our Christian Heritage in Hymns, a hymn festival on the life of a Christian through music and the spoken word, with Robert Hobby, organist, and Dr. Craig Wansink, Professor of

Religious Studies at Virginia Wesleyan College.

Saturday, July 27, 7:30 p.m. at Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 560 W. Olney

Road, Norfolk – Finale, a concert of sacred classics featuring the 90-voice Wesleyan Festival Chorus under the direction of Philip Brunelle, with Kevin Kwan, organist, and the Virginia

Symphony Brass.

Best wishes for a wonderful summer!

In Memoriam

Wilbert W. Hiller

August 21, 1918 – May 31, 2013

Wilbert W. (Bill) Hiller was an active member of

Providence Presbyterian church since August 2005. In the 94 years he graced our lives, he was an inspiring and caring minister, a gifted artist, a

devoted husband, father and grandfather, a friend to everyone he met, and "grandpa" to far more than his own grandchildren. He had a zest for life and an

appreciation for the beauty of nature that endeared him to all. Bill is survived by his daughters, Valetta Fellenbaum and Cheryl Jorban; two grandsons, Kyle

Fellenbaum (Katrina) and Eric Jorban (Hemita) and their children.

Team, fellowship, nursery and the children’s choir (making their choir robes and costumes). Mission projects and missionaries were dear to her heart and

she gave her support to many. Edith is survived by three children, Lora “Bunny” Cutler (Roy), David Hill (Dawn) and Rebecca Freeman (Joe) and eleven

continues to stay busy

with trips by Youth, Gad-Abouts, Presbyterian Women and the Bell

Choir. This fund helps with the expenditures of the bus such as tags, inspections, gasoline and maintenance. On

Sunday, July 7 you will have the opportunity to contribute by using the “transportation envelope” in your box of

offering envelopes. Make checks payable to Providence Presbyterian with an indication for “transportation fund” and

place in the offering plate.
