Making the Best of Winter Weather at our School

Principals are often asked how we decide whether it's too cold to allow our students out in the schoolyard for recess.

Fresh air and exercise are important for children. It keeps them physically fit, and helps them stay alert all through the

school day. Parents can help by making sure their children come to school prepared to spend time outdoors. Hats, mitts,

boots and a warm jacket are important to keep students comfortable during lunch and recess. But extreme cold can be

dangerous, and parents want to know that their children will be safe. When the temperature is predicted to drop below -

15C, the City of Toronto may declare a cold weather alert. Schools are very sensitive to the needs of our students and

pay close attention to the weather, especially when the windchill is below -20 C.

The TDSB Severe Weather Protocol is flexible, so that every principal can make a decision that meets the needs of his or

her school. It sets guidelines for when to allow students outside for recess, when to make outdoor breaks shorter, and

when to keep students inside altogether.

Office Reminders

Student Absence/Safe Arrival: Reminder to call school if your child will be late or absent before 8:30 am.

Safe arrival messages are only picked up till 8:30. Any that come in after this time will not be retrieved. If

your child will be away for the afternoon, please call the school number—not safe arrival line. Safe arrival

phone number is available 24 hours a day— 416-396-2437 and press 1.

Entry into School: When entering the school it needs to be through the front doors, using the buzzer. To

ensure we have a safe school, it is imperative that we know who is in the school at all times. Visitors and

volunteers need to sign in /out at the office and receive a badge.

Student Lates: Once O’ Canada is played your child is late and needs to come to the office for a late slip.

Parents are not to drop children in their class before coming to the office.

Early Pick up: students can only be picked up before 3. If you have an appointment later than 3:00, you

should be picking them up by 2:45. If you arrive after 3, you will have to wait to pick your child up at usual

dismissal time.
