From John Pargeter This afternoon's match is part of only the second series,

and after last week's opening matches a pattern has already emerged.

It is that Lancashire, Yorkshire and Northumberland look like being the three involved for the Northern Group title, and two of them will part company to go into Division One of the new league system which will take over next season from the current method which has been in operation since just after the First World War - in 1921 to be exact.

Lancashire's 44 points against Durham indicates their scoring potential, for they ran in nine tries, seven of them through threequarters, and six of those by their wingers.

Not every si de will give them as much freedom, but Lancashire showed that they do not need a great deal of room.

ln contrast, the dour Cumbrlans set their stail to contain Northumberland, the reigning champions, and succeeded probably as weil as they had hoped, keeping the score down to 3-15 at Kendal.

Yorkshire, on the other hand, seem to be finding a new lease of life under their new coach, Alan Old, formerly of Middlesbrough of course, and they trounced todays visitors, Cheshire, by 28-7 at Wilmslow, so that the rest of the North is golng to assess Northumberland's potential by the score this afternoon.

Rarely does it work out that way, however, for there is no such thing as form in rugby and, in any case, there have been team changes.

Last week may have seen the last match for some time between the counties involved, for Durham seem unlikely to finish in the top two, so they could lose the Lancasnire game; Cumbria may not get into the same league as Northumberland, and Cheshire will have to improve considerably to stay with Yorkshire.

It is sad in many ways, for tradition dies hard, and friend­ships within the northern boundaries go back a long way. If it has to happen in the name of progress, at least the opportunity will be there to play more attractive pre-championship matchesl

From John Pargeter Until recent years, Cheshire had given as much as they

had taken in the championship, indeed twice they thwarted Northumberland.

On each of those occasions, it was Cheshire or Northum­berland for the Northern Group tille in 1950 and 1961 .

ln season 1949/50, both Cheshire and Northumberland were unbeaten when they clashed at Birkenhead Park. Tony Baker (Percy Park), whose half-back partnership with Telford Moralee both for the club and county was at that time famous, had to cry-off and as Andy Bell (Northern) had been concussed earlier in the season, Brian Ratcliffe (Medicals) was switched to fly-half , and John Thompson (Percy Park) brought in as the hooker.

Northumberland were very concerned about the kicking of Dicky Uren the Cheshire fUIl-back, so Thompson was warned not to concede penalties, and Moralee with an indifferent service, was not accustomed to his new half-back partner. Northumberland lost 3-11 and Cheshire went on to win the national tille.

ln season 1960/61, the two met, thi s time level on points, again to decide the Northern Group, and it was at today's venue ... the County Ground.

Again Cheshire had a great kicker in Freddie Griffiths and he was playing at fly-half. Northumberland considered him the real danger man, and again Cheshire triumphed, Griffiths defying the critics who claimed he was "over the hill" and a penalty by him helped to a 6-3 victory.

Again, too, Cheshire went on to win the national crown ... and those were the only two occasions Cheshire have ever been champions!

Small wonder, Northumberland cannot take them lightly this afternoon.

Of the 1949/50 Northumberland team, ·Johnny Baume went on to play for the Army and for England, and it was interesting that Old Novos as they were then, supplied the brothers Titch and Eric Reeve!

Of the 1960/6 1 side, sadly Bobby Donald died earlier this year; Don Rutherford is now weil established at Twickenham with the RFU; John Eiders has been the England coach and is just back from Australia no doubt full of the Wallabies' poten­liai ; Gordon Blackett went 10 Rugby League; Mike Hymas was the player who started the protracted behind-the-scenes row over county qualifications, Yorkshire claiming him ; Tomm y Hall is the President of Gosforth; Derek Morgan an England selector who managed the team which toured Argentina in the summer, and John Ward is a prime worker in the publication of this programme!

No· doubt later today Cheshire will be tell ing their counterparts ail about thei. players of those days!
