From Innovative Niches
to a Cooperative IoT Ecosystem

3RD INTER-OSS WORKSHOP
INTEROPERABILITY AND OPEN SOURCE SOLUTIONS FOR THE INTERNET OF THINGS
BILBAO, JUNE 6, 2018
IoT ecosystems
An IoT ecosystem is created by different elements: devices data, an IoT
platform, applications and users.
In the center of this system we have the IoT Platform. The IoT platform
orchestrates this multi-stakeholder interaction that can provide the value
creation.

Limitation of current IoT ecosystems
Heterogeneous network
Multiple value streams that overlap but not
communicate
Most IoT data produced are not currently used
Major players dominating the market, vertical silos
Missing innovation opportunities from smaller player
Interoperability
A horizontal connection of IoT
ecosystems:
IoT platforms, devices, systems
→ services, applicationsNearly 40% of the
total value that can
be unlocked
requires different IoT
systems to work
together and can
reach up to 60%
“
Working together “SHARECONOMY”
Value creation works in 2
ways
Co-creation: cooperativeenvironment
Coopetition: mutual
benefits but competing in
market
The symbIoTe Case
Open Source interoperabilityframework
Brings together IoT platformsvertically isolated for delivering
new services and applications
Unified way to expose and search of IoT resources.

Platforms’ Federation
➢ Decentralised and close collaboration
of IoT Platforms
➢ Choose the partnerships
➢ Develop trusted relationships
➢ Create value by selling, buying &
exchanging IoT data
➢ Create/co-create new products
➢ Scale up across domains & regions

Platform federation benefits
New innovative robust products with more
diverse and dense data
New partnerships, (include smaller IoT
players)
Creation of new value streams
Scalability potential

Challenges in Cooperative IoT
Ecosystems
✓ Cost-effective/ ROI
✓ Establish a sustainable and stable ecosytem
✓ Small players want to maintaintheir unique selling points and are not willing to “loose” control over resources
✓ Trusted relationships, qualitydata and secure interactions
Takeaways
Break the silos bringing together
heterogeneous IoT systems for further value
creation and build new partnerships.
Make efficient use of physical spaces,
devices, data and the cloud to accelerate
innovation across sectors and regions.
It is worth changing, not only the way we
exchange resources and data, but also the
way we do business.Catalonia’s Human Tower
