How are you waiting, preparing, observing this Advent? What “rough ways” might need to be “made smooth” in your life, your world for a more meaningful celebration of Christmas?

Remember Our Seminarians When Sending Out Christmas Cards Our seminarians love to know we are thinking about and praying for them. Those studying at

The seminarians will go on break December 10th.

This is the Year of FaithThis year believers around the world are called to renew their commitment to the faith. During

the Mass become “ full, active and conscious participants.” Show your commitment to the Mass and the Eucharist by responding to the prayers and singing. At Mass we come

together as one body, never as a spectator. Let’s celebrate this Year of Faith with great joy and celebration.

November 29, 2015 The First Sunday of Advent

T his weekend we begin the sacred season of Advent. The season of Advent is a 4-week period in which we will prepare ourselves to celebrate the ‘Feast of the Incar-nation,’ of God becoming a human being. In the words of the fathers of the Second

Vatican Council, ‘Advent has a two-fold character: as a season to prepare us for Christmas when Christ’s first coming is remembered; as a season when that remembrance directs the mind and heart to await Christ’s second coming at the end of time. Advent is thus a period of devout and joyful expectation.’

Notice that the council fathers said that the time before Christmas is a time of ‘devout and joyful expectation.’ If we are honest with ourselves, however, these next few weeks are oftentimes anything but. For many of you, these next few weeks will be filled with anxiety, chaos and even anger. Don’t believe me? Go to any big-box store the day after Thanksgiving and watch seemingly normal people fight over cheap flat-screen televisions. Others of you will freak out about getting your house decorated just perfectly. Still others of you will spend yourselves into crazy amounts of debt getting that ‘perfect’ gift for some family member who already has too much stuff.

Sadly, our extremely consumeristic culture distracts us from the true meaning of this sea-son. This time of year is not about running around crazy, eating and drinking like gluttons, spend-ing ourselves into oblivion, worrying that everything needs to be ‘just so.’ Rather, this should be a time of peace, of joy, of confident expectation of better days ahead. During these days, we are re-minded yet again that God continues to keep His promise to us to send us a Savior. If, during the next few weeks, you get blinded and stressed by all the seeming ‘demands’ of this time of year, re-member that Promise, and find Joy in that!
