Box 16547 Jackson, MS 39236 Phone (601) 366-2335 www.saintrichard.com Th ere has been a lot in the Catholic press lately about whether or not President Biden should receive communion given his strong pro-choice, pro-abortionpolicies. Many U.S. bishops who favor denying him communion refer back to a 2004 memo written to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops by then Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI), who at the time was the Prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. This memo addressed the question of pro-choicepoliticians receiving communion. In it he wrote, "The minister of Holy Communion must refuse to distribute it" when warning and counsel given to the manifest sinner "have not had their effect." Other bishops have said that the Eucharist should not be weaponized, and that denying communion to pro-choicepoliticians would also demand denying communion to those who support such things as war or the death penalty or any other of a host of moral issues. I will let the bishops sort out whether or not the President should receive communion. But this situation should cause each of us to pause and reflect upon the very nature of the Eucharist, and about how well each of us prepares for and receives communion. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, in light of St. Pauls First Letter to the Corinthians, 11:27-29, states that Catholics should be in a state of graceto receive communion, and that anyone conscious of a grave sin must receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before coming to communion.(CCC 1385). Because we believe that the Eucharist is the real presenceof Christ, it only makes sense that we should worthily prepare ourselves to receive our Lord and Savior in the Blessed Sacrament. But do we do this? Do each of us really understand what it is that we are receiving, and are each of us really serious about purifying ourselves so as to worthily and respectfully bring our Lord into our very selves? Next week Ill offer some more food for thoughton this. FROM FR. TAKE TEN WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Spend 10 minutes reflecting on next Sunday’s Scripture Sunday, May 6 (Sixth Sunday of Easter) Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48 1 John 4:7-10 John 15:9-17 In the Gospel, Jesus challenges His disciples to love one another as He loves them, that is, with a self-sacrificing love. This, truly, is the love we are called to have for others.

Th is weekend, approximately 40 of our high school juniors will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Kopacz. This promises to be a joy-filled event for our young people and for their

families. At a deeper level, however, the Sacrament of Confirmation reminds us of the

reality of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Shortly after Jesus ascended into heaven, God sent the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles at Pentecost, thereby giving rise to the birth of the Church. In the centuries that followed, the Holy Spirit has animated the People of God, enabling us to live lives of faithful discipleship and to bring about greater fruit in the Kingdom of God here in our world.

Make no mistake, we are still in need of the transformative power of the Holy Spirit here and now. We increasingly live in a world that is divided, dangerous, and violent. Furthermore, I believe that humanity is more and more under the influence of the Evil Spirit, Satan, than under the influence of God’s Holy Spirit. With all this being said, I pray that you all pray fervently to the Holy Spirit each day for the Spirit’s guidance and care. The Holy Spirit offers us many wonderful Gifts (Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Counsel, Strength, Fear of the Lord), as well as great Fruits (Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Generosity, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control). These Gifts and Fruits are in great demand now more than ever. May we experience them in ever-greater measure so that we can live lives that are graced and blessed by God.

May 26, 2019 Sixth Sunday of Easter

Spend 10 minutes with your family reflecting on next Sunday’s Scripture Sunday, June 2 (The Ascension of the Lord) Acts 1:1-11 Ephesians 1:17-23 Luke 24:46-53

Am I cognizant of Jesus’ presence in those around me? Do I realize that others may encounter Jesus in me?

As we continue our exploration of the Holy Spirit, most of us (I hope) remember learning about the Gifts and the Fruits of the Holy Spirit when we went through Confirmation preparation. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are

specifically found in ISAIAH 11:1-4, and they are Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Strength, Knowledge, Fear of the Lord, and Piety.

You’ll notice that the Gifts of the Spirit assist us in knowing more about who God is and what God wants, and then give us a greater capacity to accomplish that. In this day and age, knowing God’s will more clearly and being able to accomplish it is of utmost importance. We live in a culture that increasingly doubts the existence of God, and as a result, focusses more on satisfying the ‘Self” rather than ‘God.’ Sadly, if our only concern is continually satisfying the ‘Self,’ we will be in for a difficult, lonely life. It is only in knowing and doing ‘God’s’ will that we will have any hope for lasting peace and happiness.

The Fruits of the Holy Spirit are found listed in GALATIANS 5:22-23. These are Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Generosity, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control. It has been said that the Fruits of the Spirit are the offspring of the Gifts of the Spirit, and that the Gifts generate the Fruits. That makes sense, as I do not think one will ever have love or joy or patience or kindness without first opening oneself to and welcoming the Gifts of the Spirit first. And these fruits are what everyone really wants deep down, for who among us doesn’t want to feel love, or to experience joy, or to have more patience (especially in traffic)!

It pleases God to bestow the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit upon us. However, we need to do our part to open ourselves to these Gifts and Fruits, and to welcome them into our lives. I’ll talk about how to better do that next week.

June 6, 2021 Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Th ere has been a lot in the Catholic press lately about whether or not President Biden should receive communion given his strong ‘pro-choice, pro-abortion’ policies. Many U.S. bishops who favor denying him

communion refer back to a 2004 memo written to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops by then Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI), who at the time was the Prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. This memo addressed the question of ‘pro-choice’ politicians receiving communion. In it he wrote, "The minister of Holy Communion must refuse to distribute it" when warning and counsel given to the manifest sinner "have not had their effect."

Other bishops have said that the Eucharist should not be ‘weaponized,’ and that denying communion to ‘pro-choice’ politicians would also demand denying communion to those who support such things as war or the death penalty or any other of a host of moral issues.

I will let the bishops sort out whether or not the President should receive communion. But this situation should cause each of us to pause and reflect upon the very nature of the Eucharist, and about how well each of us prepares for and receives communion.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, in light of St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, 11:27-29, states that Catholics should be in a ‘state of grace’ to receive communion, and that ‘anyone conscious of a grave sin must receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before coming to communion.’ (CCC 1385). Because we believe that the Eucharist is the ‘real presence’ of Christ, it only makes sense that we should worthily prepare ourselves to receive our Lord and Savior in the Blessed Sacrament. But do we do this? Do each of us really understand what it is that we are receiving, and are each of us really serious about purifying ourselves so as to worthily and respectfully bring our Lord into our very selves? Next week I’ll offer some more ‘food for thought’ on this.

Speaker - Dr. Danny Dickerson, Chaplain of Kindred Hospice Ministries Thursday, June 10, at 6:30 P.M. in FOLEY HALL

The St. Richard Bereavement Support Group will meet on THURSDAY, June 10, at 6:30 P.M. in FOLEY HALL. It sometimes takes courage to attend the first time, but IT DOES HELP.
