From Ethnography to Designin a Vineyard

    Abstract

This paper summarizes the process from ethnographicstudy of a vineyard to concept development and

interaction design for a ubiquitous computing solution.

It provides examples of vineyard interfaces and the

lessons learned that could be generally applied to the

interaction design of ubiquitous systems. These are:

design for multiple perspectives on data, design for

multiple access points, and design for varying levels of

    attention.

    Project statement

In March 2002, as part of ongoing work exploring the

potential for ubiquitous computing systems in

agricultural and outdoor environments, we embarked

on a project to look at the potential usefulness of

ubiquitous computing to the wine-making industry, with

particular interest in using sensor network technology.
