Trinity Lutheran Donates Rocking Chairs
The Millstadt Senior Center recently received a donation of two wooden rocking chairs from Trinity Lutheran Church in Millstadt with a matching donation from Thrivent Financial. We also received a donation from Trinity to purchase new cushions for each. The rocking chairs have become more than just a place to sit, they have become a gathering area for endless memories for those who rock. Thank you very much Trinity Lutheran, we truly appreciate your generosity.
Senior Talk Now Has color. As Of The February Issue The Senior Talk Will Have Some Color Pages. We Hope Everyone Enjoys The New Format. Thank You from Senior Talk Staff.
Bob Wheat joins (L) Darleen Slovinski and (R) Georgia Bruehl as they try out the new rocking chairs.
How are those New Year resolutions going? Don’t ask me, because I would not be able to tell you a success story! It is just hard to reach goals and we have to be kind to ourselves and have patience. I read that success is picking yourself up one more time than you’ve fallen down. So pick yourself up, and visit us at the Senior
Center this month. We have many people that come here and say, “Wow, I didn’t know you had all this going on and how good the food is!” Please don’t forget to note the wonderful line-up of events we are planning for February. It will be another fun month of great gatherings that help support your center. So mark your calendars. Our Annual BBQ will be Saturday, February 28 here at the Community Center. Your help and or baked goods would be appreciated. Volunteers are needed to prepare and serve food. If you can help please contact the Senior Center office. Also you will find an order blank in the back of this newsletter. Suggestions, improvements, and praises are always welcome. We don’t know how we are doing unless we hear from you. If you have articles to submit to the Newsletter, please email them to me at [email protected]. We are always looking for news items.

Telephone Scams The police department has received multiple complaints over the last few weeks regarding telephone scams. These scams include subjects identifying
themselves as IRS Agents threatening legal action against the person they are calling, unless they provide them with personal information. They also include subjects telling the person they called that they have been a victim of fraudulent activity and need to clear it up, or else charges will be filed against them. These of course are scams however, they are targeted at the most vulnerable members of our community, that being the elderly. The police department encourages anyone who receives such calls to hang up, and not engage in conversation with the caller.

Millstadt Community Center recently received a new TRUE industrial size refrigerator. The old refrigerator had been here since 1983. After 31 years of loyal service, the last year it had required many service calls and expenses. The compressor was old and the Freon it required had been outlawed by EPA and substitution were not working and leaking out. It took nine Millstadt Village and Township workers to figure how to get the refrigerator in the old kitchen. They had to bring out the old one over the counter and then bring new one in the same. Other options were explored and the best choice financial, safety and health was to purchase a new one. We were able to get a new one for $2,875 which we think was a good buy, but we found that magnets don’t stick to the sides like the old one. We hope this one will last as half long as our other one. We were lucky that no food was spoiled. We are very grateful to the Village and Township employees working together to get the refrigerator into place and also for funding from both government agencies. Great Job and Thank you very much !!!!

Laminating Tuesdays If you need something laminated please stop by on Tuesdays and we would be glad to laminate for you free of charge.
DID YOU SIGN IN? Knowing who is at lunch at the Center is important for a number of reasons. First of all it’s good to keep track so if someone isn’t there for a few days we can contact them to make sure everything is ok. Second, when you sign in and are registered we are able to submit your name to receive our grant money to help pay for the meals. A way to look at it is that if you aren’t registered and signed in we can’t send a bill for your lunch to the Area Agency on Aging.
Your Help in This Matter is Greatly Appreciated

Cold Enough Yet? Submitted and Written by Judy Vollmer Jacobs
“It’s been around 30 degrees for four days now! Is it cold enough yet?” “Look outside. Hardly any frost on the window. The neighbor is still hanging her clothes out. The plant leaves finally turned brown and fell off. Not yet.” “It’s below 26 degrees
for three days now! Is it cold enough yet? “Check the windows. They’re full of pretty frost patterns. Do they melt when you breathe on them? Then, go get the overalls off the clothesline. They should be frozen dry now.” “Three more days of 20 degree weather. You put towels to fill the window and sill crack. We have a throw rug across the door bottom. Is it cold enough yet?” “Ask your Dad how the goldfish are doing.” Dad told me the goldfish pond was frozen a good 6 inches when he wiggled the 2x4 to feed them oatmeal. I started telephoning and learned that other adults agreed. It was cold enough – long enough – and plans for the skating party were in high gear for tomorrow night. Dad even volunteered to chaperone. Word spread. By the next evening more than a dozen kids gathered at a pond outside of Millstadt opposite Werner’s greenhouse. A bonfire burned. Sticks were sharpened to thread wieners and marshmallows for roasting. My sister’s skates would fit (with a sock stuffed into each toe). Off Dad and I went. On the floorboard lay the skates from the cellar rafters – oiled, shining brightly with knife sharp edges. In response to my question he replied, “Someone might need them.” Giggling, laughing, lacing up, and finally with wobbly steps we individually hit the ice to the strains of music from a tiny portable radio. Of course, some of us literally HIT the ice as glides faltered and ankles collapsed. “What? Who?” And, there he was, hands behind his back – striding, gliding forward – a cross-toe step and backwards he came – a cross-toe step and forward – a figure-eight – a toe step to stop – and, he helped me back on my feet. Never had I been more astonished. Eventually, he helped me and some others to circle the pond several times.
A couple hours later, we unlaced to clean up the food and bonfire. Finally, We arrived back home. “Did you have a good time?” “You bet! And, guess what? Dad knows how to ice skate and do all kinds of stuff!!!” “What? How long has it been? 20 or 30 years? You old fool! Dad whistled all the way down the cellar stairs with his gleaming skates slung over his shoulder.
Groups Or Businesses Wanted Is your group or business interested in sponsoring an event at the Millstadt Senior Center? We are looking for sponsors for celebrations that include: Mardi Gras , St Patrick’s Day, Easter,
Beginning of Spring, Flag Day, 4th of July, First Day of Summer, Labor Day,
Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. or any theme of your choice. The sponsoring group or business would provide snacks, games
(Bingo very popular) and prizes. A few members of your organization could come and mingle and manage the party. This would help your group to see what we do here and to meet some of our patrons and would also help the Center. If you are interested in sponsoring an event, please contact Director Patty Evansco at 476-3731.

Services Available Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them.
Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. If you have any questions concerning the lunch program please contact Patty Evansco at 476-3731.
All Lunches are Catered from the Millstadt IGA, West End Bar & Grill and
