rJj t is my pleasure to greet all nurses throughout theCommonwealth of The Bahamas, as we celebrate NursesMonth 2003, under the theme, uNurses Always There ForFamilies: Fighting AIDS Stigma, Caring For AIl.~

Many 01 you confront the devastating reality of the HIV/AIDS pan­demic each day. You routinely care for victims and struggle to maintainyour strength in the face of great difficulty. We salute your courage, yourexpertise and your compassion.

The HIV epidemic has created a terrible burden for millions of indi­viduals, families and communities worldwide. Relieving the sufferingrequires improved health care, better access to treatments, more vigor­ous prevention efforts, more effective social outreach and support forthose most vulnerable, particularly orphans.

However, we recognize that stigma and discrimination block themarch forward against HIVIAIDS. They fuel the HIVIAIDS epidemic bycreating aculture of secrecy, silence, ignorance, blame, shame and vic­timization. Stigma prevents communities from addressing HIV/AIDSwith the appropriate Health care services or legal and educationalstrategies. What stops them is HIV prejudice. And all that will stop HIVprejudice is speaking openly about the facts.

Some people with AIDS are being denied basic rights such as foodor shelter, and dismissed from jobs they are perfectly fit to perform.They may be shunned by their community, or most tragic of all, by theirown family.

The fear of stigma leads to silence, and when it comes to fightingAIDS, silence is death. It suppresses public discussion about AIDS, anddeters people from finding out whether they are infected. It can causepeople - whether a mother breastfeeding her child or a sexual partnerreluctant to disclose their HIV status - to risk transmitting HIV, ratherthan attract suspicion that they might be infected.

But whatever Jaws and regulations are adopted, the most powerfulweapons against stigma and silence are the voices of the world's peo­ple speaking up about AIDS. By continuing to fight AIDS stigma andcaring for all, nurses will be leading the way in breaking down the wallsof stigma and silence.

On behalf of the Government and people of The Bahamas, I saluteall nurses throughout the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, for theinvaluable contributions which you make, on a daily basis to the careand safety of persons in this vulnerable group and the nation as awhole.

Your theme, "Nurses Always There For Families: Fighting AIDSStigma, Caring for All", is most timely, as the HIVIAIDS epidemic hasproven to be overwhelming to the heallhcare system, socially and to thenation. You are aware that the stigma of HIV/AIDS has created acultureof secrecy, silence, ignorance, blame, shame and victimization. Thisnew, but unwanted culture, can hinder the ability of health care workers10 address the issues effectively. The stigma can also lead to discrimi­nation, which has often led to loss of jobs, broken relationships, socialostracism, violence and unfortunately, missed opportunities for treat­ment. As stated by Derek Bodell, of the organization 'AIDS Trust' - "aspeople with HIV are living longer and healthier lives, it is vital that theylive without the fear of discrimination." The involvement of family andtheir communities is a meaningful way of fighting this new culture andbreaking down walls. Highlighting the role of the family during yourmonth of activities, is indeed an excellent way of reaching out to per­sons who are closest to the victims of this disease, and a means of uti­lizing an untapped, invaluable resource to fight this unwanted culture.

Tonight's event demonstrates to the community your commitment tofostering an environment of togetherness. Is shows that while a nurseis a committed professional, she is also able to balance her life withsome relaxation. In our community, nurses are known for their untiringcommitment to the well-being of the population. It is this commitmentthat has assisted the nursing profession to grow in the academic andclinical arenas, as well as in the community. Indeed, nurses in TheBahamas have long been able to meet the standards of local, regionaland international bodies.

I applaud each and every one of you for your hard work and dedica­tion to the delivery of quality care throughout Grand Bahama and theNorthern Region.

~The month of May has been proclaimed Nurses Month byr;::) our Prime Minister and traditionally, we pause to recognizelSI the contributions made by our well-deserving nurses.

This year's theme for International Nurses Day, "Nurses AlwaysThere For Families: Fighting AIDS Stigma, Caring For All" implies thatnurses are the main primary Health Care providers to families includingthe marginalized such as persons with HIVIAIDS. Therefore we have asignificant role to play in the fight to reduce the affects of the stigmaassociated with HIV/AIDS.

It also reminds us of that part of our Nursing Code of Ethics whichdictates that the fundamental responsibility of the nurse is fourfold: topromote health, prevent illness, restore health and alleviate suffering.

I take this opportunity to express sincere appreciation and salute allnurses in the Grand Bahama Health Services for their commitment,dedication and invaluable contributions to the Health care system ofour nation.
