ASPE News - Eastern Michigan Chapter 5

Hello from your VP Tech!

nice and best of all – golf leagues have started! The sad news is that this means that we have only one more meeting left in this program year. But what a meeting it will be!

our tabletop and event sponsors last month:

April Meeting Sponsors: Meek Beck Associates, Performance Engineering, VE Sales, Balfey & Johnston, Merlo Energy, Burke Agency and Reliance Detection Tech!

that show our Chapter so much support.

April’s meeting was all about hot water. Mike and Paul started us out by reviewing the hot water requirements in the Michigan Plumbing Code and also doing a brief review about when is a water heater a boiler and when do ASME ratings apply. Some take-a-ways from the Design Session:

» If your system is under 200 MBH, heating to less than 210°F and storage is under 120 gallons, it is a water heater and no ASME rating applies. If these conditions do not apply, then you need to follow the Boiler code and need an ASME expansion tank. That being said, in the IMC, you need an ASME expansion tank if you are at or over 30 psi operating pressure, and since in boilers the relief is set to 30 psi, all tanks need to be ASME rated. One last note – Detroit has its own boiler inspection group – so check with them about their requirements.

» If you have a multiple tank hot water system, you need a T&P valve for each tank.

» T&P valves are very important, any time you heat water in a pressure vessel – the vessel has the ability to explode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGWmONHipVo

» Michigan code differs from IPC in that the T&P relief

» Michigan required an individual 1070 mixing valve for

Centers, Nurseries, Adult Group homes, Adult congregate

basically all public restrooms that have ADA lavatories, have to apply this rule.

»but it is good piping practice to provide one.

» T&P relief piping should be metal and rated at 210°F (copper/steel).

Our Technical session was about multi-temperature hot water systems, presented by Alan Deal from Performance Engineering.

VP Technical ReportTheresa Allen, PE, CPD, LEED AP BD+C, GPD

Some items of note from his presentation:

»

line.

» Pressure drop through the master mixers should be around 10-20 psi unless other known reason (i.e. low building pressure).

»psi unless otherwise published.

»

make sure the master mixer will still work at these conditions.

»more than 50 ft. from the source of hot water (30 ft. in food service applications) or if it takes more than 30 seconds to deliver hot water. The Michigan code now refers to the IECC when it comes to when recirculation is required.

» When working on food service projects, don’t forget about the Michigan Department of Agriculture’s code

» When you have projects that have different water temperature requirements (projects with normal

water over 140°F) – you should consider creating two hot water systems and decoupling them. This can lower the cost and provide for less risk of scalding for occupants.

May’s meeting will be about the Single Stack Vent Method and we are bringing in Julius Ballanco again, since his presentations are always well attended and very informational! The Design presentation will be about Combination Waste and Vent and Section 915 in the Michigan Plumbing Code. We hope to see you all there!

Also be sure to join us on May 11th for the AYP Social at Bagger Dave’s! If you didn’t get an invite, let me know – this will be a great way to celebrate the end of a good program year and get to know your fellow Chapter members better.

In closing, and most importantly: REMEMBER TO SUPPORT THOSE WHO SUPPORT THE CHAPTER!

Sincerely,

Theresa Allen, PE, CPD, and your VPT

Dann Holmes, ASPE Region 2

Just when you thought the elections were over, here they are again. This time, we won’t be seeing a billion dollars spent on ads and politicians taking over the airwaves. These elections will be quick, quiet, but none the less important. Will you be voting for your local ASPE representatives? Better yet, are you volunteering to run for a chapter board position? Please

consider it, being involved in ASPE at the board and regional level has brought me more personal satisfaction than I can express.

Since we are talking about change, how about changes to the plumbing and mechanical codes. Do you have a current copy of the 2015 IPC, IMC and/or IFGC books? Do you like to read the commentaries? If so, please contact me. As a member of the Code Study & Development Group of SE MI, I have these publications in stock and ready for shipment. For those of you in Michigan, I also have the amended Michigan code books. These books are priced to sell and often less expensive than ordering directly from our friends at ICC.

The Eastern Michigan Chapter of ASPE will be hosting the Region 2 Presidents’ Meeting on June 2-3 in Detroit. This should be a memorable event for those who think of Detroit

but not anymore. The incredible amount of building undergoing renovations, professional sport teams returning to the city, new stadiums, Midtown, the M-1 Rail, the Grand Prix, an international riverboat cruise are just a few of the events waiting our ASPE guests. You need to add Detroit to your bucket list!

For those of you that love to golf, many of our chapters are hosting their annual golf outings this month. These are usually their biggest fund raisers of the year so please open up your wallet and let your charitable donations out.

Best regards,

Let me know what you think:

Just over a year ago, I set out on a mission

for the construction industry. We have all seen the GPS robotic total stations… and laser scanners are yesterday’s news, right?
