Here are some photos from last week.  One is a nice shot of the kitchen which gives a good feel for it.  We had Thomas' friend Freddie over for tea with his parents and you can see the boys demonstrating their Highland Fling on the table. 

There are a few shots of Thomas and Graham in the garden when we were having lunch on the weekend.

I had a meeting with my various bosses today to discuss my return etc.  It would seem that however and whenever I like will be fine.  Suzanne said she rather me back sooner, but completely understands me taking the year.  Thomas charmed the secretaries and one or two of my patients.  He has his first running snot nose like other babies, and even this I delighted in.

Thomas is changing by the day.  Last week he found his toes, yesterday he has been

developing his voice.  It occurred in the context of his outrage about going swimming.  Having enjoyed it the first few weeks, yesterday was in stark contrast.  He bellowed with indignation from the outset and continued through out.  Even screamed as he was put under water - i knew this as I saw the bubbles coming out his mouth.  I'm beginning to doubt the wisdom of persevering - on the one hand it is important that he learns to swim and be confident in the water...but is this the only way. 

This morning  he has developed his repertoire further and has been making high pitch squeals which please him no end.  I think he may be teething as he has started being a little unpredictable and oscillating between crying and smiling for no apparent reason.  I have kept him happy by doing marathon singing sessions, complete with actions.  Interestingly, he has a clear preference for 'twinkle twinkle' over 'ba ba black sheep'.

Hi,

We're just back from a Mini Music Maker's session which was great - see photos attached.  No photo of the tea and scones after which is an equally important part. 

We've had some lovely crisp weather, the leaves have almost all fallen which has made for some cracking bon fires.  I've included some pics of Graham outside with Thomas.  He loves a roam in the garden and woods and is asleep by the end of it.

We went to a Halloween part at the neighbours with all the kids from The Loan.  Thomas went as a cat - you may recognise the pink ears that I knitted him for his mouse outfit, but I made him a fresh tail and fashioned him a cat head out of my maternity knickers.  Edgy, and a talking point with the neighbours.

We're having a day in this afternoon - a four and a half hour drive to see Nell and yesterday, a drive deep into the Boaders to a woman in our antenatal group who was hosting this week's walk and lunch.  The rain was remarkable so we sat by the fire having soup and cake.

Looking forward to nz sun and sea.

That's quite a photo. He looks grown up and official or could that be the effect of the marble statues?

Thomas and I are just back from a day trip to visit Nell who is, quite literally, heavily pregnant. It was a four and a half hour drive all up and Thomas managed it well. He slept for much of it and enjoyed entertainment by the Jelly Kitten when awake. There were tears only for the last stretch. Who could blame him - it was getting tedious by then. We only had one baby tape which ran for 25 minutes before requiring to be rewound.

Nell was grand. In the middle of a lot of house changes. The timingof which seems to be cutting it fine. She's changing her colourscheme from all white to shades of grey which is more significant than it sounds. She has 11 days left til her due date. I tried to make reassuring sounds by drawing parallels to us moving house 3 daysbefore our due date, but just ended up sounding reckless.

This week Thomas has moved from random grasping of passing lightweight toys to determined and effective picking them up. He can passa Jelly Kitten from one hand to another with relative ease. Thisevening he was quivering with excitement as he looked at vintagefabrics in a design magazine that Nell gave me. He even managed toturn a page, but Graham thought this was a by product of trying to put it in his mouth.

Graham's work on Fiona's extension is going well. He's making goodprogress and it is looking great. Long hours though. We're lookingforward to our holiday together.

And yes, sound like a good idea to book a place for Megan's wedding.

We had a quiet weekend.  Saturday we had friends out for burning of leaves followed by soup.  Got 10 around the kitchen table fairly easily.  Long breakfast on Sunday with Thomas on Graham's knee fixated with everything that was going in his mouth - will send photos when I down load them, camera upstairs now.  Can't remember what else - Graham worked on the pantry - plastering and putting up shelves.  Thomas and I had more songs, books and he had a full body massage which he loves.  He now has considerable strength on his tummy.

Graham and I have talked again about child care options.  Last week we had considered sharing child care with Lindsay - I'd work 3 days, look after Thomas on one day and after Freddie and Thomas on another, Lindsay would look after them both another day, graham with Thomas on a 4th and nursery on the 5th day.  Seems a bit complicated. 

Then it occurred to us...Graham could look after Thomas full time and I go back to work full time in the summer.  It feels good.  That way Thomas and Graham will have

the benefit of spending a year together and I can put in some good hours at work to feel like I've pulled my weight before I take another year off if we have a second baby.  Course, it'll be tough and with my long hours, I may not  him much during the week - though Graham suggested they get up early, have breakfast with me and join me on the cycle over the Pentlands.  Nevertheless, my priority is that Thomas has a good infancy with plenty of time with us.  So even though I'd rather go back part time, it's a great opportunity for Thomas and Graham.  And it makes good financial sense as my next lot of maternity leave would be calculated on my full time consultant's salary.  This plan fits in well enough with Graham's work - it would follow on neatly from his break in work (our house, Fiona's house then the Antarctic).  When he got back, he could start a fresh (maybe out here) or making High Fashion Jewellery (another story).

Yes, the fist in the mouth photo does indicate a certain penchant for putting things in.  Watching him though, it seems that he likes the feel of his tongue and he often puts fingers into his mouth and sort of licks them. 

He had a bath this morning and floated like an angel until he discovered that he could slam both feet into the water to make remarkable waves.  Later in the day he a massage, a walk to the post office and a long sleep in the sling. 

He's currently getting his evening change and songs and chat from Graham.  I can hear that it's time for his feed.

The hand grasping is a great stage – I guess he is also into putting everything in reach into his mouth as well – or close to.  I see from the other swimming photos that he still has a proclivity for whole hand exploration. Cute adaptation of the pram as well; that Silver Cross is turning out to be very flexible; and it seems such a short time ago that he was so small, he was almost lost in it.

Hi,

We had a super day today.  Thomas had his first swimming lesson in a posh hotel in the middle of The Borders.  We met Freddie and Lindsay there and had tea before hand.  The boys loved the water.  Thomas was relaxed and floated peacefully - aided by his plastic nappy which ballooned his bottom to the surface.  He was unaffected by water on his face or in his ears and loved being trailed through the water.  The woman taking the session was lovely and showed us safe ways of holding them and moving them about  - and she led the singing.  It was just the four of us and perfect.  The pool was otherwise empty and was nicely heated.  Lindsay bought us surprise underwater cameras.  I've included a few pics from the changing rooms.

Did baby massage today and have now completed the whole body.  Also went to mini music makers this morning which was fantastic.  It is run by a woman in the Scottish coral society who is brilliant and imaginative and the babies and kids love it.  Thomas shouted and flapped his arms in the exciting bits and looked pleased when his name was sung and ecstatic when the ball was bounced towards him on the magic stretchy silver material.

 Greetings from Vietnam – Hoi An in Danang province, to be precise.  It’s a beachside place and the signs of the recent big storms are everywhere – the sludge on the walls about chest high, the mountains of sand piled on either side of the road (a bit like snow!), great gobs of green blobs floating down the river outside the hotel room etc.  Walking under the coconut trees is dangerous; a falling coconut hit a guest and since then, there has been a mass rush on the trees to remove coconuts and damaged fronds.

 It’s been a good meeting – interesting bunch of people from ASEAN countries, all trying to work together to produce some papers in the region for the Lancet; an interesting process, to say the least. My role is as adviser to one of the papers and I have lucked out with a chap from the Philippines who will do a great job as lead author.

 One of the interesting spin offs of the meeting was the suggestion that Robert and I try to organise a meeting in Bellagio next year of people who want to take the idea we discussed with Richard in Edinburgh a little further (yet to be discussed with Robert; contact has been very erratic).  If this goes ahead, I thought it would be great if you 3 could slip across!  It is a truly magical small Italian town on a lake.

Dear Anna,

Sounds like a lot of fun – and a good deal - but what was the film?

We are now back home, after the first half.

Began with a pick up of Rob at the airport, after Ruth had been to the Suffragette breakfast.

A couple of hours at Whale Bay with Jim and the family – all there and a practice of our songs. Then to the local marae for a send off from the school kids, rather good performance, and a change over to the hearse which couldn’t get down the drive. A slow drive into Ngarauwhahia and the Turangawaewae marae. A formal welcome and speeches (21/2 hours) from locals with responses from University people and an appearance by the King – a huge honour for Jim and Jane. Then “tea” and another karakia. Rob was staying overnight in the tent with Jim, also Jenny, Helen, Sarah and the two babies and other kids. Jane, David and Stephen went home to the Bay; David, Bhagee and Vidi went to a local motel.

It starts again at 10.30 am or so with a more public service. Then to the local endowed school and then a drive by the University and Cambridge Tce before the cremation at 3pm. We will then come back and drop Rob off for the 7pm plane to Nelson.

Sorry I missed your call this am - I had left the house already to catch the 9am bus into town.  I met Lindsay and Freddie en route and we went to the Cameo cinema for a screening for mum's and babies.  the session is called 'for crying out loud' and for £4.50 you get a movie ticket for you and bub and a cup of tea!  It was brilliant - about 60 mums, lots of swaying in the isles, but surprisingly little commotion/distraction.  Thomas watched the first half, cooing in appropriate places, fed and gurned for the rest.  then lunch out before the bus ride home.  Hope the funeral goes well. love Anna

Dear all

It has been a wonderful day- Anna had the interview this morning and within an hour, was offered the position as consultant psychiatrist in old age medicine – a job that is ideal for her and which she can have as long as she wishes.

We have all been exuberant all day – and after a celebratory lunch, returned to W Linton and went for a walk in the area which enters a rough track at the start of a 10 mile bike ride over the Pentland hills to get to the job – in a year’s time , that is.  Wild wild country with highland cattle and sheep that have crumpled horns.

We have just been celebrating with prosecco and salmond blinis – and now a simple meal to seal the day.

Thomas managed to play a crucial role – long (5 hour) sleeps over the past 2 nights and slept throughout the morning’s excitement.

We may now be able to relax and start to enjoy the Edinburgh festival, starting tomorrow with the history of Scotland over the past 8 centuries!

Dear Ruth, Rob, Sam, Bhagee, David and Jane,

We have the opportunity of a three hour Easy jet delay here at Amsterdam airport to make contact with you.

We have just finished our week of teaching at Erasmus and are heading, slowly, back to Edinburgh to spend a little more time with Anna, Graham and wee Thomas, now five weeks old. The teaching went well, 60 students, hard work but rewarding. The evenings out at our favourite local restaurants were fun – mostly seafood for me.

Anna is doing well, very happy as a new mum with plenty of confidence and a very relaxed attitude. She is enjoying the early stages of her year off on maternity leave. On Monday she has an important job interview for a position as a consultant old age psychiatrist – actually the job she was filling in for the three months before delivery. She seems confident although hasn’t been able to do much last minute preparation.

Their house, The Heddles, is progressing slowly. I hope that by the time summer ends the heating will be working. The decorators are meant to be in the first week of September when they are off in Switzerland for a short holiday. Lovely grounds just over a hectare,, sloping lawn and woods, all situated in a nice village 15 miles south of Edinburgh.

We are back in Devonport on September 6,

Dear family and friends,. THG is now one week old, actually 8 days old. He was born at 8.30pm on Friday 10 July after a very easy pregnancy and an even easier delivery.

He went home the next morning. We met him on day 4 after coming from our London meetings. He is an easy, calm and relaxed baby – sleeps most of the night and day and wakes only to feed. He lost only an ounce of weight and his now back above his birth weight (7lbs 3 oz). His parents have taken to their new roles in the most natural way.  They are both enjoying every moment with THG and find it hard to believe their good fortune.

Meanwhile their house (The Heddles) is a work in progress. It is rapidly showing its potential and once the decorating is finished, the bathrooms connected and the heating installed – all in the next couple of months – it will be a house transformed. My main contribution so far has been mowing the lawns – 2 1/2 hours worth. In all there is 1.25 acres with plenty of mature trees and woods as well as a large vege garden with glass house.  Ruth has done a huge amount of cooking (lots for the freezer) as well as tacking some of the garden – a lost cause as it is so huge.

The village of West Linton is very cute, and the Loan – their lane – leads up onto the Pentland hills, a great place for walking and running.

Today we moved into Edinburgh and are staying in a flat in the converted stables of old friends who have very generously allowed this to be a second base; they have gone sailing for the next three weeks. We will visit Anna and THG most days.  He is still a tiny baby (after Sol Harvey Beaglehole)
