1. Introduction to Xiaomi2. How Xiaomi began its journey3. How Xiaomi entered the hardware market4. Xiaomi goes beyond smartphone industry5. Xiaomi-Apple controversy
FIRST, A BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF XIAOMI
Xiaomi is a Chinese company, founded by Lei Jun and headquartered in Beijing.
It is ranked 4th amongst the smartphone manufacturers of China and has influenced international markets to a great extent.
It defeated Samsung in terms of sales in the second quarter of 2014 in China!
Though it is not yet known in some-parts of European countries, it has set its foots on China, Malaysia, Singapore, India and Indonesia.
HOW XIAOMI STARTED ITS JOURNEY
Xiaomi began as a software company creating custom ROM based on Android, named MIUI.
They made MIUI available for all, even non-developers stating that their aim was to improvise Android and provide users the features they didn’t have before.
MIUI was quite related to Apple’s UI, having features such as cloud backup and music player. (They even had their own app store!)
This led to a controversy, where Apple openly accused Xiaomi claiming that they copied Apple’s UI. (More on that later)
As a result of tremendous spread, at the end of 2014, Xiaomi could brag of having over 30 million MIUI users worldwide.
XIAOMI STARTED PROGRESSING
While rocking the floors of the software industry, Xiaomi decided to try their hands in the hardware market.
In 2011, Xiaomi launched Mi One, their first ever Android smartphone, which was a good one in its range.
This continued as Xiaomi manufactured Mi2, Mi3, Mi4, Redmi 1s and many other smartphones.
APPLE-XIAOMI CONTROVERSY
As talked about earlier, Xiaomi is accused of copying Apple’s UI (User Interface), which took years to develop.
However, Hugo Barra, the Vice-President of Xiaomi global, refused to accept the fact saying that they just took their design as an inspiration.
IT’S NOT JUST SMARTPHONES NOW
Today, Xiaomi manufactures Smart TVs, Wi-Fi Routers, Power Banks, Headphones etc., giving a direct challenge to Samsung and Apple.
