AphexTwin gets Choice Prize nod ALAN OWENS
THE enigma thatis Aphex Twin - Richard D James - is, by our estimation, just the second act ‘from Limerick’ to make the Meteor Choice Prize list for album of the year.
It is not a well known fact, but James was born here, so qualifies for the list for Irish album of the year - for Syro - by dint of that fact, confirmed by record label Warp this week.
After Windings narrowly beaten in 2013 - James makes up just Limerick’s second ever

shortlisted nominee for the prize, which will be announced at a five event in Vicar Street on March 5 on the tenth
anniversary of the prize, that took some inspiration from the Mercury in the UK.
The other nominees are Delorentos, The Gloaming, Hozier - a red hot favourite - James Vincent McMorrow, Sinead O’ Connor, Damien Rice, The Riptide Movement, U2 and We Cut Corners.
There was no nod for MynameisjOhn, God Knows and MuRli for Rusangano/Family, one of the albums of the year in 2014, which we expected to at least make the shortlist.
The winning act will receive €10,000, a prize fund provided by IMRO and IRMA. The Meteor Choice Music Prize - Song of the Year 2014 shortlist will be announced later this month.
Lisa Comerford of Meteor said: “The competition is always fierce for the coveted title and this year is certainly no different. As always, our esteemed judges have a difficult task ahead, and given the calibre of shortlist I certainly don’t envy their task!”

Battle for album of the year heats up By Laura Larkin U2 could be in for another cash boost for Songs of Innocence without having to worry about album sales.
The album, which was automatically delivered to apple customers earning a reported $100m for the band, has been short-listed for the Choice Music Awards Album of the Year.
Prize money of €10,000 will be given to the winner - but Bono and co face some stiff competition.
Bray sensation Hozier was also included in the list. The 24-year-old singer
was the toast of the music business in
2014 and is tipped for Grammy success for his smash hit Take Me to Church.
Despite a rollercoaster year, Hozier’s dad John said that the Meteor nomination
would be great. “He really puts in a lot of hard work,”
his proud dad told the Herald. The Choice Music Awards celebrates
the cream of homegrown talent in music. Damien Rice and Sinead O’Connor
have also been short-listed for the prize after both artists returned to the charts this year.
The Delorentos - who previously won the prize - are in the running with a nomination for Night Becomes Light.

Lucan band The Riptide Movement also made the list for their album Getting
Through. “2014 was an incredible year for Irish
music. A wealth of emerging talent made serious inroads in various international
territories while taking the creative force of Irish music around the world,” Victor Finn the CEO of the Irish Music Rights Organisation.
This is the tenth year of Ireland’s main award ceremony which will take place in Vicar Street in March and will be screened on RTE 2.

Cork turns up the volume for music lovers
CORK’S music scene is
punching above its weight. Local event bookers and producers
are lauding the reopening of the Pavilion on Carey’s Lane and the continuation of Live at the Marquee as evidence that the city, is alive find loud.
It’s a small music scene but an industrious one, with collaborative
events between venues and bookers ensuring that the city benefits.
With a host Of vibrant local venues, well-run festivals and the
unique experience of Live at the Marquee, Cork has a boisterous music scene that caters for all musical tastes.
The city and county have a long tradition of attracting major acts that are rare outside cities with much higher populations.
The resurrection of the Pavilion under new ownership is being lauded as a boost for local venues. Downstairs - now called Pana has opened already and will host local music every night of the week, while upstairs (simply ‘The Pav’) will open at the end of March.
The Booka Brass Band has been secured to be part of what is promised
to a spectacular opening weekend, the full details of which will
be revealed in the coming weeks. Musically, the venue will be
looked after by Edel Curtin and her team at Coughlan’s Live whose work on Douglas Street was recognised nationally when they picked up the gong for IMRO Venue of the Year 2013, their first full year in operation.
Tfds was a game changer for the venue, allowing ihem to attract more prominent acts. They are nominated for the award again this year.
Ms Curtin said: “Last year we won the IMRO Award. This put us on the map in terms of credibility for the venue.”
She also said that this is what prompted the new owners of the Pavilion to approach Coughlan’s Live to get involved in the running of the operation.
Despite the emergence of a number of smaller venues in Cork over the last 12 to 18 months, including
Coughlan’s, the Oliver Plunkett and El Fenix, the disappearance
of the Pavilion left a void in the Cork music circuit. It was the city’s prominent mid-size venue with a capacity of approximately
400. The vacuum meant that fewer international acts were including Cork in their touring schedules.
Vibrant local venues, well-run festivals and the unique Live at the
Marquee mean that Cork caters for all musical tastes, writes KEVIN O'NEILL
Lady Gaga performing at Live at the Marquee. She is just one of several international stars who have performed at the venue over the years, inducting the likes of Kanye West, Jay Z, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Cliff Richard.
Edel Curtin said: “In those few months when the Pav closed, you just saw Cork disappear from touring schedules for a lot of international
bands. “Cork needs a mid-size venue
like the Pav. It has great small venues in Coughlan’s and places like
the Oliver Plunkett which are really coming into their own as venues.
For international bands, the
Opera House and Live at the Marquee do great jobs. There is such an avid following of music in Cork that it is a shame to have to travel to Dublin.”
The Pavilion had hosted the likes of Mercury Music Prize winners Franz Ferdinand and the XX, Laura Marling, the Fall, Buzzcocks, a now-legendary postMarquee
set from Kanye West and
numerous slots for the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and house legends
Fish Go Deep during its previous incarnation.
Major international acts have had a regular place in Cork since the inception of Live at the Marquee in 2005.
This year marks a decade in operation with its international and
domestic line-up beginning to

trickle out. Guitar-rock legends ZZ Top return
to the tent, alongside punk legend Billy Idol. The most recent addition is Grammy Award-winning
music legend Van Morrison, his first show in Cork since playing
the Marquee in 2005. There are also two slots for the
Coronas, one of which has already sold out, a triumphant Leeside return
for Damien Rice and a 25th anniversary show from the Frames. Riverdance will pack out the tent for five nights in early June also.
Christy Moore also returns to Cork, making it 11 shows in 11 years at Live at the Marquee for the folk singer.
Completed line-ups in the past have boasted a wealth of talent
that is normally absent outside major urban centres like Dublin and London, from legends such as Cliff Richard, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan and Neil Young to pop mega-stars like Kanye West, Jay Z, Lady Gaga and Paolo Nutini.
Managing director of the Indiependence Festival in Mitchelstown,
Shane Dunne, commended the capability of Live at the Marquee to attract such acts, saying
that they are evidence that Cork punches well above its weight in comparison to cities and towns of its size.
He said: “Cork is very difficult to book for.
“What people don’t understand is that booking agents want to get the ferry to Dublin, drive up the Ml to Belfast and get the ferry
straight back to Scotland after. In touring terms, Cork is equivalent to Ipswich or Stoke.”
Mr Dunne said that it’s difficult to know what will sell in Cork. Previously, he worked in the Savoy on several major bookings. During his time with the city centre venue, MCD brought Mumford
& Sons to Cork, while Aiken brought Mr Dunne himself was responsible
for securing performances from hip-hop legends WuTang
Clan, 2manydjs and Janelle Monae.
The latter, he explained, was indicative of how difficult it is to
gauge how a show will sell in Cork. Monae had performed to huge crowds the previous August at the Electric Picnic festival and was due to play Cork four days after
the Glastonbury festival. Prior to her Glastonbury show,
just 60 tickets were sold. Her entire set was broadcast on BBC on the Friday and in the four days, a further 500 tickets were snapped
up. He said: “People could sell out
three dates in the Olympia in Dublin - that’s 4,500 tickets - and sell
50 in Cork. It’s really hard to tell.” Live at the Marquee is different
to anything else in the country though.
“It’s a bit special. It goes up for six weeks, the bands play and move on and then it goes down again.
“There’s something magical about it. Even now people are waiting
to see who is going to be booked to play it.”
Some of the performers in Riverdance, who will pack out Live at the Marquee for five nights this summer, and have now added an afternoon show as well.

Treacling the i trad scene
Ronan Leonard hears from Mat Molloy on the winding career path of a trad musician THE
winding career paths that Irish traditional musicians
take is exemplified by Matt Molloy, the flautist
who was an original member of the The Bothy Band, then joined Planxty, and became a member of The Chieftains.
He has released 10 albums under his own name and in collaboration
with other musicians. His most recent record Pathway To The Well was released in 2007 and recorded with John Carty and Arty McGlynn.
That trio will be performing tomorrow night as part of The Ballincollig Winter Music Festival.
Matt’s explanation for how the trio came to be formed is not a particularly
dramatic one: “I suppose we’ve been friends was the start of it, myself and Arty go way back. I met John about 20 years ago, we are from the same neck of the woods. While he was bom in London,
all his people are from around Boyle which is about 12 miles from where I’m from, Ballaghaderreen. It’s always been good for our kind of music in that area of North Roscommon,
South Sligo, parts of Leitrim and a corner of Mayo, there’s
a strong tradition of fiddle and flute music.”
While the trio have been playing together for many years, there is no set routine for them. “It’s not a
hard and fast thing. We work in different orbits if you like, and every now and then we get on the same page and might be able to do a few gigs together. We all really enjoy playing with one another, all three of us have the same music interests.
“We always talk about making another album, and we probably will when we get our bits and pieces together and we find some time we do that. At Ballincollig we’ll play a lot of sets that aren’t on the album, we’ve plenty built up now!”
Matt’s schedule after this concert is a busy one, “I’m with The
Chieftains all the time, we did two big tours last year. We are taking it a little bit easier now but still we’re very functional,' we're off to the States for a pretty intensive four-week tour in February and March doing the East and West coast.”
Traditional music gigs, unlike most other genres, tend to have blurred lines between the ‘opening’
and ‘headline’ acts, with musicians joining each other for sets.
When speaking about Jackie Daly,
the original accordion player in De Dannan, and Matt Cranitch, a highly acclaimed fiddle player, a duo who chiefly play Sliabh Luachra music.
Matt Molloy said: “There’s a very likely chance that we’ll all end up playing together that night, we’ve all played with each other in various combinations, just on and off over the years at different sessions. The music fraternity, it’s a small world really, you’ll always bump into someone sooner or later!” ,
Outside of his music career, Matt also runs his own pub ‘Matt Molloys’ which won last years IMRO’s Connaught live music venue of the year.
He feels the connection between pub and traditional Irish music is vital. “As both a publican and a musician, I think it’s very important
for pubs and venues to support music. From my own point of view, I’d like to think musicians are looked after. I can remember when I started off, we’d be told to put the fiddle and flutes away ‘they don’t have music in this place’ and that’s not too long ago.
When I moved to Dublin first in 1964, there were only two clubs to play in, there was The Pipers Club on Thomas Street which was on a Saturday night, and the Church Street Club which was on a Wednesday
night. It was run by Leitrim and Sligo ex-pats.
“Shortly after that O’Donoghues started to allow the music in,
from which The Dubliners grew from, and then the ballad boom came along. I think it’s very important
that pubs cater for music and give that facility.”
Matt applauds The White Horse for initiating the Ballincollig Winter Music Festival. “I think it's a wonderful idea to have a festival at this time of year. Anything to shorten the winter, raise the spirits and bring a feelgood atmosphere,
who wouldn’t like that? It^ keeps you going until the grass’ starts to grow...” .
Matt Molloy, John Carty and' Arty McGlynn play The White Horse on Friday, January 30, with special guests Jackie Daly and. Matt Cranitch. Doors are 8.30pm’ and tickets are available via www.tickets.ie
