FOCUS ON INFECTION CONTROL

feature

PLAY IT

On December 8, 2011, the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts affirmed the final decision and order of the Board of Registration

in Dentistry suspending the license of a dentist who failed to conduct and record weekly spore testing. The dentist’s failure constituted dental malpractice.*

Biological Monitoring and Indicators With the results of that recent case, spore testing (biological monitoring) is more important than ever before. Spore testing uses highly resistant bacterial spores (Biological Indicators) to test sterilizers. Since spores are more resistant than other microbes, killing them should also kill the less resistant microbes on equipment. Biological Indicators are considered the benchmark for biological testing.

Sterility Monitoring Options: • Mail-in sterilization monitoring services to a 3rd party testing laboratory • In-office 24-hour monitoring systems• In-office 10-hour monitoring system by Crosstex

While some offices prefer to use a professional lab for 3rd party documentation, others appreciate the convenience that in-office processing provides without having to mail and wait for results. With the new 10 hour monitoring system, offices can now react even

more quickly to address a problem and achieve peace of mind without having to wait or guess on results.

It should be noted, in-office monitoring systems can only be used with steam (autoclave) sterilizers; the mail-in monitoring services can provide results for steam, dry heat, chemical vapor, and EtO (ethylene oxide).

CDC Guidelines**According to the CDC correct functioning of sterilization cycles should be verified for each sterilizer by the periodic use of biological indicators. In addition, testing should occur at least weekly.

Play It SafeIn addition to conducting routine weekly biological monitoring, equipment users should perform biological monitoring for the following occurrences:

Maria Friske - Fine Art Bio

Maria Friske proudly declares herself an “American artist, a regionalist, even a localist.” Deeply inspired by a sense of community and place, her work conjures up the genus loci of natural features and landmarks. Her themes have encompassed the Finger Lakes region of New York State, the historic Rochester (NY) Public Market, and other Upstate Regions and Neighborhoods whose legacy has inspired, according to Friske, “America’s greatest hits.” These themes have included civil rights, women’s rights, and african and native american political, communal, musical and artistic legacies. Her innovative use of 3-dimensional objects, combined with an interest in mythic forms, results in a revelation and celebration of contemporary iconography that is designed to enchant by re-animating “common places” with a renewed spirit of community and shared values.

Educated at Syracuse and Alfred Colleges, after a brief sojourn in the sciences, Friske lived in Manhattan and Rochester launching a successful career in the commercial arts, which won her numerous awards and citations. In 1992 she began to submit fine artwork to exhibitions and again won accolades. In addition, education became another passion. She has served on the Fine Arts faculties of Nazareth College and the University of Rochester, and has served as a mentor and educator to “at risk” population children, not-for-profits, and other 6-12 population classrooms.

Active in community and arts initiatives, Friske has devoted considerable time to grass roots art organizations. In 2007 Friske was commissioned to design an outdoor mural by the Swillburg Neighborhood Association (Rochester, NY) through the Arts & Cultural Council’s Culture Builds Communities Block Grant Program. She is the founder and Director of Artists’ Row, the Rochester Public Market Annual Arts Fair.

Her work has been shown in galleries across Western New York State.
