    1

Welcome to the 2010 Fringe Programme.

This is the 64th time that the wonderful city of Edinburgh has hosted the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the greatest show on earth.

The programme about to unfold before you is truly mind blowing. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest, most energetic, most brilliant festival in the world. Entirely open-access, it is brought to you by thousands of dedicated, talented, driven and creative performers, producers, venue managers and artists of all art-forms, from all across the world.

Our programme cover highlights this principle of open access – created from ideas tweeted by Fringe followers and drawn live by brilliant illustrator Johanna Basford during a two day twitter extravaganza. So, just like the Fringe itself, it was the result of a huge collaboration involving anyone and everyone who wanted to take part.

    Introduction

And there truly is something for everyone at the Fringe, whether you’re from Edinburgh or are travelling to the festival from further afield, whether this is your first time at the Fringe or whether you’re one of the many, many festival stalwarts.

So, enjoy reading this programme, enjoy discovering the funny, moving, challenging, enlightening and entertaining shows the Fringe has to offer, enjoy this beautiful, historic city, and above all enjoy the festival. The Fringe is about discovery, and you’re in for a treat!

Support the FringeThe Festival Fringe Society has existed since 1959 and has been a registered charity since 1969. Our mission is to advise, support and encourage everyone taking part in the Fringe, to provide comprehensive information and ticketing services for participants and the public, and to continue to raise the profile and promote the entire Edinburgh Festival Fringe throughout the world.

We here at the Festival Fringe Society strive consistently to maintain our open-access policy, ensuring anyone can take part in the festival without being subject to artistic vetting or selection. This policy is key to the overall success of the Fringe and over our many years has meant that we can proudly present an annual programme featuring a wealth of new writing and the hottest new talent from all over the world.

The Fringe generates £75 million for the economy every year and is part of what makes the city a wonderful place in which to live, visit, invest and study. We are entirely and enduringly grateful to all of our supporters, the Friends of the Fringe, our corporate sponsors, our public funders and the many individuals who donate to the Society. This support helps us keep the cost of participation as low as possible, allowing us to create, maintain and develop facilities and services for the next generation of Fringe performers whilst ensuring that the Fringe is the world’s greatest platform for nurturing and discovering new international talent across the whole spectrum of the arts.

The #fringecover projectAt the heart of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is our founding principle of open access. That means that anyone with an idea and vision can bring a show to Edinburgh. To celebrate this, the 2010 Fringe programme cover was drawn by artist Johanna Basford inspired by ideas sent in from our audience and performers through Twitter.

On 8/9 April 2010 Johanna collated and drew your tweets based on the question, ‘What is the most unusual thing you’d like to see at the Fringe?’.

There were a total of 2634 tweets about the project as well as 1675 suggestions – 176 tweets were drawn over the 24-hour drawing period and dozens made it onto our three Fringe covers.

We would like to thank everyone for participating in this fantastic event.

Top Tips Variety equals spice The Fringe features artistic endeavours of every variety, so why not get stuck in? Don’t just stick to what you know, try and sample a bit of everything, from theatre to stand-up, panto to dance, music to an audio adventure around the city.

Go freeThere are plenty of free shows on offer, not to mention all the discounted tickets and 2for1 ticket deals – being broke is no excuse not to get out and catch a show.

Dress wiselyThis is Scotland, the country of four seasons in one day and even though it’s August you’d best be prepared for sun, rain, cold and lots and lots of walking.

Pace yourselfWith over 2400 shows on offer, there’s no way you’re going to catch everything, so try and find the perfect balance between quantity and quality. By starting out early each day you’ve got a better chance of getting the tickets you want and not missing anything on your must-see list.

Open your mind … and your heartEdinburgh’s population triples during the festival, so that means crowds, queues, and more crowds. Keep a sense of humour and an open mind as you battle around town and you’ll escape ‘crowd rage’ and get a lovely dose of ‘festival fever’ instead.

Choose a show Edinburgh Festival Fringe iPhone App Download the free Fringe application on your iPhone to access all of the Fringe’s show listings and get exclusive access to that day’s half price ticket offers, available from the Half Price Hut. The official Edinburgh Fringe iPhone App will tell you what shows are starting on the hour and provide you with directions to get to the venues, as well as helping you navigate your way around the city. You can also submit and read show reviews, helping you to plan your day on the go.

Half-Price Hut – supported by the Scottish Café and RestaurantNo particular plans for the day? Then swing by the Fringe Half-Price Hut at the Mound Precinct and see what tickets you can pick up at half-price for that day. Open 10:00-21:00, 11-30 August.

MediaA huge range of critics cover the Festival, from the daily broadsheets and international media to blogs, specialist publications and street press. Keeping an eye on the reviews sections will give you a good idea of what shows people are talking about and what’s getting good feedback.

Ear to the streetProbably the best way to pick a show during the Fringe – besides this programme you’re holding in your hands – is just to talk to people. Ask friends for advice, chat to people in the pub or people in queues. Pick up flyers, check out posters, stop by the High Street stages to catch free previews and go with your gut instinct – you may wind up seeing a turkey, or you may catch this year’s golden goose, you never know. That’s the thrill of the Fringe!

The Environment The cover of the Fringe programme is printed on FST accredited 50% recycled paper (the remaining pulp is from accredited sources) while the inside pages are printed on 100% recycled stock.

Please hang on to your copy and pass it on to a friend, or recycle it when you’ve finished with it. If you need to use the map to get around town, pick up a copy of the official festivals map, available at the Fringe Office and most venues around town.Free parking in Edinburgh during August is scarce. If you usually travel to the festival by car and would like to try public transport or car sharing instead, visit edfringe.com.
