by FVC Chaplain, Jake Bennett

Happy New Year! Can you believe

we are beginning the 2014 year? I

truly hope this coming year is an

encouraging and blessed one for

you and your family.

With the conclusion of 2013 my

primary focus was to take a brisk

walk through a brief history of

hymnody. As I studied and

reflected upon the deep riches of

the many hymns and songs that

many of us have sung throughout

our lives I realized how little I

know about some significant men

and women throughout Church

history. This year, as we start with

new beginnings, I would like to

invite you to walk with me on a

journey through history as we read

about the lives of some fascinating

men and women.

This is a daunting task since there

are so many amazing people and

only 12 months in a year! To help

narrow the field a bit I am planning

to cover people with a tie (holiday

or significant event) with each

month of the year.

This month I want to share with

you about St. Basil’s Day. No, this

is not the day when we put extra

basil on our food. This day is

celebrated on different days

depending on the branch of

Christianity. St. Basil’s Day

commemorates an early church fa-

ther who lived and served in the 4th

C. Some Christian traditions do

not celebrate St. Nicholas’ Day

(which is where we get the cultural

image of Santa Claus) but instead

and chose to give away his

wealth to the needy. He saw

this as following in Jesus’

footsteps.

There is much more that could

be said about Basil but I hope

that you get an encouraging

picture of a man who sought to

be humble in the face of

adversity because of his faith in

the Lord. We need these

pictures to encourage and direct

us towards how we can love

and serve each other in our

community. Well, until next

month, here is a quote

attributed to Basil, “God who

created us has granted us the

faculty of speech that we might

disclose the counsels of our

hearts to one another and that,

since we possess our human

nature in common, each of us

might share his thoughts with

his neighbor, bringing them

forth from the secret recesses of

the heart as from a treasury.” I

hope you find this ability to

share your story and find this

kind of connection within our

community here at Friendship

Village Chesterfield.

choose St. Basil’s Day to

exchange presents.

Basil was born around 329AD

and is considered one of the

Cappadocian Fathers. These three

men were the major theological

leadership in the region of

Cappadocia, or modern-day

Turkey. They are very important

for the development of Christian

theology. In the years after the

Counsel of Nicaea – which

established the Nicene Counsel,

Basil was one of the major

proponents in ending heresies that

kept trying to deny Jesus’ divinity

– specifically a group called the

Arians. He would not

compromise his convictions as a

bishop and follower of Jesus,

even when it meant confronting

the Emperor (Valens). Basil stood

his ground on God’s Word but

sought peace in everything else.

While his stand against heresy

may be what he is most known

for Basil was also a very pious

and generous man. He lived in the

pre-monastic days and yet often

saw the joys of living a simple,

communal life. His writings were

heavily influential on Christian

monasticism.

Additionally if you ever walk into

a cathedral or church building that

has many paintings on the walls,

tradition states that this form of

decoration began with Basil.

Probably least known about Basil

was his care for the poor. He was

born into a very wealthy family

For this

month’s

issue, the

Village

Voice has

decided to

turn the

tables and

spotlight the

woman

behind all the wonderful articles

we read each month.

Since 2005, Esther has

interviewed 316 new residents

and written 316 articles for the

Village Voice. Esther makes the

interviewing process look easy.

She puts her interviewee at ease

by bringing the new resident a

“Welcome Bag” as a gift. She

would like to thank her daughter,

Ann Kallemeier, for driving her

to purchase these bags and their

contents. Esther has truly blessed

this community with her gift of

word and hospitality. Esther

retired from this very important

position this Winter 2013.

Many of you know Esther as she

is very involved at Friendship

Village Chesterfield, but here is a

behind the scenes look at this

very accomplished woman:

Reprinted from the July 2005

issue of the Village Voice.

When Esther moved into

Friendship Village in March of

2005, little did we realize what a

dynamic lady she was. Esther was

born in Kansas City and raised in

Quincy, Illinois. In 1942 she

received a scholarship to GEM

26

City Business College and in 1942-

1945 attended the University of

Illinois and later, attended the

American Institute of Banking in

1967-68.

Her list of credentials is

outstanding. In the spring of 1955

after being a homemaker and

community volunteer she served as

journalist for the St. Ann News. In

1957, she began serving as editor of

Arcade Publication Inc. of

Overland, MO., later becoming

Editor of the St. Louis County Star,

Donnelly Publications, Inc., of

Overland. In January of 1967 her

new role was that of Customer

Relations Officer at the Bank of St.

Ann on St. Charles Rock Road. In

April of 1968 she was named

General Manager of Donnelly

Publications, Inc. and effectively

began a new weekly publication,

the Creve Coeur Citizen. She later

became the Advertising/Public

Relations Director for Home

Federal Savings & Loan in

Overland, MO, for several years.

Esther was Vice Chairman, Board

of Managers of the Northwest

YMCA, and in 1974 she became

Community Chamber of

Commerce President. She was also

the first woman to be elected to the

board of elders and member of the

Diaconate at Overland Presbyterian

Church.

Other acclaims she received were: “Woman in Finance and Industry”

“Woman in Communication”

“Who’s Who of American Women”

“2,000 Women in Communication”

“Women in Business & Industry” “Who’s Who in the Midwest”

Some of the offices Esther held

included president of the six-

member executive board of Lake

Sherwood Estates and Northwest

Business and Professional Women.

She served three times as president

of Beta Sigma Phi—XI Gamma

Epsilon Chapter.

In addition to her vast business ac-

claims, she received recognition

from the Pattonville School District

for her volunteer work in public

education.

Esther was married to Clyde R.

Phillips for 58 years. They raised

five children– all honor graduates

from Pattonville High School; three

were honor graduates from colleges

or universities.

At Friendship Village, she enjoys

playing bridge, her morning

exercise as well as attending the

Monday Morning Coffee Hour.

Thank you, Esther

Phillips, for your

tremendous job as

Resident Reporter!

You are a true gem to

the FVC community.

Friendship Village Chesterfield Senior Food Drive Update

The generosity of our villagers provided a great donation of food for the hungry for the

month of November. There were 356 cans of food and personal items, $511 in monetary gifts

with a total value of $1156. This was enough to feed and care for 680 persons for one day.

Again the monetary gifts were used to purchase liquid protein and other essentials.

Although the Holiday season is over, the hungry still need to be fed. Please continue to show

your love and concern by providing for St. Louis Seniors in need. The next collection will be

held on Monday, January 6th at 9:00 am. Checks should be made out to “Operation Food

Search” and turned in at the front desk or given to Chaplain Jake Bennett.

Thank you all for your continued support.
