Mark Your Calendars! Fall Book Sale: October 4-7, 2012

“I am eternally grateful ... for my knack of finding in great books, some of them very funny books, reason enough to feel honored to be alive, no matter what else might be going on.

Kurt Vonnegut (1922 - 2007)

People donate books to the Book Sale knowing that they will bring in money to the FOL, who will then use the money to support the Richardson Library. All very good things!

However, the good those books do goes far beyond the walls of the Book Sale. The left over books go to several community agencies to bright-en lives in unexpected ways:• The Elks Club for distribution to many VA facilities in the Dallas area; the books help our vets pass the time while they are in the hospital.• The Network of Community Ministries who nurture literacy by giving books to children whose families cannot afford their necessities, much less books.• The Richardson Adult Literacy Cen-ter to use in their literacy tutorial activi-ties; what better way to build vocabu-lary than by reading!• The Richardson PTA to add to their Book Sale which funds scholarships for Richardsonʼs graduating Seniors.

Have you ever gone to the last day of a Book Sale and found the tables almost empty except for twenty copies of a book that you could hardly wait to give away, too?

This is never the case at the FOL Book Sale. These are the people who sort the books donated for the sale throughout the year, and who keep the tables filled with interesting, enticing books during the sale.

“Those w h o m we support ho l d u s u p in life.”

Marie Ebner von Eschenbach

FOL President Sandy Martin presents a check to Nancy Kubasek, President of Richardson Reads One Book.

The FOL provided $1000 to fund the addition of The Plaza of Richardson to the Library's Out-reach Program to Senior Living Homes. The funds were used to purchase 75 Large Print books to form the nucleus of an 11th outreach collection. The Library rotates new Large Print collec-tions every three months to eleven sites including retirement and assisted living homes, nur-sing homes, and the Richardson Senior Citizens center.

Volunteers from Altrusa of Richardson do the physical mo-ving of the books.

FOL Sponsors Three Librarians

When budget cuts preven-ted the Richardson Library from sending representatives to the Texas Book Festival, FOL saw an opportunity to help our friends at the Library.

The Texas Book Festival takes place in October at the State Capitol in Austin. It is described as “one of the most respected and engaging book festivals in the country that is entirely free to the public.”

It was established in 1995 by First Lady Laura Bush and has quickly evolved to hosting annually over 200 Texas and nationally known authors.

If you enjoy reading and dis-cussing the best in literary fiction, nonfiction, memoir and biography, then one of the BOOKbabble book discussion groups is for you!

There are several groups to choose from including two morn-ing groups and an evening group. Copies of the books are available to members of each group.

The Friends of the Library provided the seed money to sup-ply discussion books to begin this popular program in 2008. The Li-brary has continued to provide a supply of book club books each year to participating BOOKbabble members.

Call Janet Vance at 972-744-4376 or Penny Manly at 972-744-4350 for more information or to register.

BOOKbabble! In Memory ...Looking for a mean-

ingful memorial for the birthday, anniversary, or day important to a loved one who has passed away? The FOL can help select and purchase a book for the Library on a topic that you designate.

The Library will send you a letter acknowled-ging your gift and a book-plate will be placed in the book indicating in whose memory the book has been donated.

For more information on donating books through FOL, call Sandy Martin at 972-744-0419.

“A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.”
