Dear Friends,Welcome to our second Duke Humfrey’s Night. The first, held last year to commemorate the 620th anniversary of the birth of Humfrey, Duke of Gloucester, was a great success thanks to your immense generosity. We raised some £80,000 towards acquisition and conservation while at the same time generating a much wider and deeper awareness of the work of the Library and the cultural and historical importance of its holdings. This year’s celebration will adopt the same format: on display in Duke Humfrey’s Library, the splendid reading room constructed to house the large collection of classical texts donated by the duke, will be a selection of precious manuscripts, rare and modern books, printed ephemera, musical scores, tapestry maps, drawings, and electronic archives. Worldwide in coverage and ranging from the 12th to the 21st centuries, the chosen items demonstrate the amazing richness and variety of the Library’s resources. Every aspect of life is here: religion, politics, art, literature, music, military and social history, science, and love – illustrated by a charming collection of Victorian valentine cards. Dedicated keepers and curators will be on hand to discuss the history and significance of each item with prospective sponsors. The costs that we need to recoup for the purposes of acquisition or conservation range from a mere £65 to £114,500. But at a time of deep financial difficulty, any assistance our Friends can offer us will be gratefully received. Sponsors can opt to cover the total cost of an item or share it with others, whether as a personal donation to the Library, a tribute to a friend or partner,or in memory of a loved one. A bookplate naming the donor, or a person or institutionthe donor wishes to honour, will remain with the item in perpetuity. Sample bookplates may be seen at the end of the catalogue.

I look forward to meeting you on 15 October, on what promises to be both an enjoyable occasion and another highly significant moment in the Library’s history. The Adderbury Ensemble will perform a brief recital of music by Pachelbel, whose manuscripts will be on display (item 51). There will also be a digital show of conservation work funded at last year’s Duke Humfrey’s Night. We continue to rely, as in the days of Duke Humfrey and Thomas Bodley, on the kindness of our Friends.

Instructions1. The present catalogue is divided into two parts: acquisitions and conservation

projects, and ordered chronologically within these categories. It is also available online at www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/bodley/friends/dukehumfreysnight.

2. The acquisition prices in the catalogue do not necessarily represent the items’ value, rather the amount still needed to recover the cost of their purchase.

3. Sponsorship and other donations may be made on the day, in advance or until the following Saturday, 22nd October, by contacting the Friends’ Office: 01865 277234 or [email protected].

4. A plan of the display will be available on the night. 5. Some of the items are in fragile condition and we would ask you not to handle

them yourselves, but to request the assistance of a curator or conservator in viewing them.

6. Each item is assigned a number corresponding with that in the catalogue and is coded either green (available for sponsorship), orange (already partially sponsored) or red (already fully sponsored).

7. You are asked to put your name and the amount you are prepared to donate on a card next to the item; the curator or conservator responsible for the item will give you a bookmark to take to the donation desk where you can complete your payment.

8. You may share the cost of any item with others, with a minimum individual contribution of £25 unless otherwise specified.

9. Payments can be made by cheque (made payable to the Friends of the Bodleian) or credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Maestro only). If you are a UK tax-payer you will be encouraged to complete a Gift Aid form, which will enhance your donation by 25% at no extra cost to you.

10. You will then receive a hand-printed thank-you card as a receipt and acknowledgement of your kind donation.

11. We would like to acknowledge your generosity. Please let us know if you DO NOT wish your name to appear: (a) on a bookplate, (b) in the reports on this event.
