FRIENDS OF HAZELHURST COMMITTEE

FRIENDS OF HAZELHURST WEBSITE AND EMAIL UPDATE

By Kiri Koubaroulis

Dear Friends,

The committee is excited to announce that our new Friends of Hazelhurst website is up and running. The website is an online home for the Friends and contains information about who we are, what we do, what’s on, membership information, exhibition opportunities, past and present newsletters and other important news.

Having a website makes us more visible to a broader audience. If someone should search for us on Google, they would find our website immediately. It is just another way to increase our visibility and to communicate with present and potential members.

We encourage you to visit the page and have a good look around. Bookmark the address so that you can return to it as information will be updated regularly.

Website: http://www.friendsofhazelhurst.org

Feel free to send us any comments or feedback through the contact page.

As we continue to update our communication channels and processes, we encourage members to go paper-less if they can and to request they receive this newsletter through email. This helps the Friends save on printing and postage, is better for the environment and cuts down on the work and time involved by our volunteers.

If you’d like to receive your newsletter via email instead of post, please send us a request via email to:

[email protected]

As this newsletter is now being sent quarterly and though we will endeavour to include all news and events therein, there will be times, inevitably, when we will want to send out news and contact our members in between newsletters. We aim to do this by putting up posters around the gallery in prominent places and to send out occasional emails to members. This is yet another reason to opt-in to receiving emails from us - you don’t want to miss out on Friends of Hazelhurst news and events of course!

So, shoot us an email and opt-in to email updates: [email protected] do check out the new website: http://www.friendsofhazelhurst.org

Cheers,Kiri Koubaroulis (Website and Social Media Co-ordinator)

A WORD FROM FRIENDS OF HAZELHURST PRESIDENT

Robert Mander

Hello Friends one and all,

It’s been a good and busy first quarter of 2016 for Friends of Hazelhurst.

Our Annual General Meeting was well attended with all positions on the Executive, plus most sub-committee positions, being filled on the night. The list of 2016 Committee Members appears on Page 2. We are still hoping to fill the role of Events Coordinator and will continue to welcome more members to help out with different activities.

We were pleased to have announced the formal launch of our Friends of Hazelhurst website at the AGM.

Our inaugural welcome evening to new members in February was most enjoyable. Everyone was pleased to have the opportunity to meet others, share views and have more involvement with the Friends and Hazelhurst. As a consequence of the evening, and in keeping with our aspirations to have more members involved, we were delighted that Irene and Diane immediately joined in and assisted with the very successful raffle at the Fest Day.

As previously highlighted, the new category of Art and Community Groups has been included for Friends of Hazelhurst Memberships in 2016. We have had positive interest from our initial conversations with art groups and have our first member in this category. We believe there are great mutual benefits for art groups in joining Friends of Hazelhurst, and would welcome individual members of Friends of Hazelhurst encouraging their art groups to join.

In wanting to be inclusive, Friends of Hazelhurst will be pleased to discuss how anyone can be involved. Following the great enthusiasm and wonderful vibe that came with the “HITS LIKE A GIRL” ladies drumming performance at the last Night Fest, FOH are going to include them under our umbrella, thereby helping them to be an ongoing part of our community. Please see their separate article on Page 4 of this newsletter advising of their continuing workshops.

I look forward to seeing you at some of the many activities and events that make Friends so busy.

Cheers,Robert Mander.

RAFFLE WINNER FROM WOMBARRA

A successful raffle topped off a wonderfully busy weekend for FOH at the end of February. Hazelhurst generously donated a selection of photographic goods which, with a FOH apron and tea towel, made a great prize to win.

We started selling tickets on Saturday when we enjoyed an inspirational look at Wombarra Sculpture Gardens with the creator, sculptor Gaby Porter, in another of our Heart to HeARTS talks. Gaby shared her creative passion, showing images of many of her major sculptures and her Sculpture Garden. Look out for the information elsewhere in this newsletter about our bus trip there in May. See Page 1 for this information.

At the ARTEXPRESS Fest Day on Sunday, Shirley Wilson led a great team from the Friends of Hazelhurst table, Irene, Diane, Kiri and Peter, to sell a bumper load more tickets. The lucky prize winner was Prue Watson, a regular Hazelhurst visitor and neighbour of Gaby’s, who had attended the Heart to HeARTS talk. Congratulations to Prue.

Raffle winner Prue Watson receives her prize from Friends President, Robert Mander.

ART CLASSES AT HAZELHURST

Dear Friends,

This Autumn at Hazelhurst we are celebrating the art of the portrait, that timeless pursuit of capturing a likeness, revealing traits and sometimes vulnerabilities of sitters through the eyes of the artist. Many subjects can feel somewhat exposed when having their portrait painted and it is that intimate experience between artist and sitter we gain some insight to in viewing their work. On Friday evening 8th April 6pm we are delighted artist Wendy Sharpe will officially open Australia’s richest prize for portraiture here at Hazelhurst - the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. Wendy has won a number of distinguished art prizes including the Archibald Prize and her self portrait is a highlight of this exhibition. All 30 finalists will be exhibited and include portraits of Kirk Pengilly of INXS, actor Robyn Nevin, Edmund Capon AM OBE, milliner Rosie Boylan and artist Del Kathryn Barton. Among our special portrait events is the late opening At Night with a host of free art activities, music and talks with a special feature of one of Australia’s leading portrait artists Jiawei Shen creating a portrait of a surprise celebrity on the evening. There are masterclasses by exhibiting artists and also be a celebrity luncheon in the café so look out for details. The exhibition also features the Moran Contemporary Photography Prize celebrating excellence in photography and includes over 30 works by leading Australian artists. Stay tuned for more announcements on exhibitions - a great way to get the latest news is to subscribe to ENews via the website. I also hope some of you were able to be at our inaugural screening of Tropfest in the gardens in February. A beautiful evening and some great short films made for a memorable event with over 500 visitors enjoying the outdoor cinema. A highlight was a hello to Hazelhurst filmed by locals Nick Baker and Tristan Klein who gained second place in Tropfest this year. Stay tuned for our next outdoor screening event. A great time to be a Friend of Hazelhurst.

Cheers, Belinda

Community Group

MemberWATERCOURSE ARTISTS INC.

The Watercourse Artists group was instigated by Gai Grayson and Alison Duff in 2004 to showcase the work that was being created by watercolour students of Jan Kellaway at Hazelhurst Arts Centre.

They created the name “Watercourse” in recognition of the fact that all of the artists had come together through the study of a course of watercolour painting.

Early in the Watercourse Artists history it became obvious that the title was incredibly appropriate because although the artists had all had the same source of teaching and used the same medium they were all taking their individual artistic journeys following different paths, just as a watercourse does.

Over the past thirteen years many of the original artists have gone on to pursue other careers and interests and new members have been invited to join the group. The new members haven’t all sprung from the same painting source at Hazelhurst and, having a different perspective, have added a vitality and freshness to the group.

The eighteen artists busily preparing for their 13th exhibition to be held in the Palmhouse at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney from 13 – 16 April are looking forward to another highly successful exhibition in terms of a high volume of visitors and also sales of work. Visitors to the exhibition will encounter a vast range of styles and media from watercolour to acrylics and mixed media.

Watercourse 2016 Artists are: Pauline Blaik, Janet Brennan, Liz Coleman, Kathy Curtiss, Alison Duff, Kate Evans, Lee Flanagan, Barbara Gray, Gai Grayson, Chris Griffiths, Vicki Hazzard, Margaret Hincks, Keith Lamport, Janelle Langridge, Anne Leuzinger, Cheryl McDonnell, Raquel Tapia and Glenys Thompson.

The group are thrilled to join Friends of Hazelhurst in the Art and Community Group category and look forward to being connected with other groups and individuals from southern Sydney who share an interest in the arts.
