Dear friends, I hope and wish that the following message finds you well and happy, I would like to share with you that in Norway a none-profit organization named “Maya Friends” has been established. It took nearly four years to get it registered and now it is alive and the organizers are happy to start with their pro-jects. The organization works on the same basis as any project I have engaged in. That means none of us gets any salary or funds for the work we do; we are all giving of our time and knowledge, in order to relieve the struggle of people in Guatemala. The priority targets are children, elderly peo-ple, and single mothers. We are focusing on education, health and dignity. I mention dignity as I feel the basis of human progress is in getting to understand how valuable each one of us is. With that as a guideline, we are able to engage in activities such as those in which I have engaged half of my life, as follows:

Estimados amigos, Espero y deseo que el mensaje siguiente les encuentre bien y felizes, me gustaría com-partir con ustedes que en Noruega, una orga-nización no lucrativa llamada " Mayafriends" ha sido establecida. Tomó casi cuatro años registrarla y ahora está viva y los organiza-dores están contentos de comenzar con sus proyectos. La organización trabaja bajo las mismas con-diciones que cualquier otro proyecto en el que he participado. Esto significa que nin-guno de nosotros se pone ningún tipo de sa-lario o fondos por el trabajo que hacemos, todos estamos dando de nuestro tiempo y conocimientos, con el fin de aliviar la lucha del pueblo en Guatemala. Los objetivos prioritarios son los niños, los ancianos y las madres solteras. Nos estamos centrando en la educación, la salud y la dig-nidad. Menciono dignidad ya que siento la base del progreso humano es llegar a entender lo va-lioso que cada uno de nosotros es. Con eso como una guía, somos capaces de participar en actividades tales como aquellas en las que he ocupado de la mitad de mi vida, de la si-guiente manera:

Support the poor or the almost nonexistent health system in rural Guatemala

Deworming programs for underprivileged

children in villages and schools Provisional clinics where medical care and

preventive measures can be offered Distribution of vitamins with a focus on eld-

ers and pregnant women Facilitate transportation to the nearest capa-

ble facility in case of emergencies Work in coordination with the already ex-

isting health centers and help with the infrastructure of the building when it is needed

Support the educational system in Guatemala

Support the already established schools by

providing them with school materials such as: writing boards, pencils, color pencils, paper, notebooks, etc.

Sponsor on a yearly basis students who are not able to pay for their education

Facilitate workshops and transportation for psychotherapists who are professional in the field of special education, in cases of children with different abilities such as: Down’s syndrome, Asperger’s Syndrome (a high functioning form of Autism), At-tention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, etc.

Engage directly and strictly not tolerating any form of child abuse. We wish to do this by setting up informative seminars for parents and teachers on preventive education and successful methods of communication

Build and implement playgrounds in schools or public areas, with the labor aid of lo-cal people

Help finish those unfinished school build-ings, help in maintenance or when needed build new schools

Programas de desparasitación para niños

cer atención médica y las medidas pre-ventivas

Distribución de vitaminas con especial aten-ción a los ancianos y las mujeres embara-zadas

Facilitar el transporte a la instalación más cercana en caso de emergencias

Trabajar en coordinación con los centros de salud ya existentes y contribuir con la infraestructura del edificio cuando sea necesario

Apoyar al sistema educativo en Guatemala Apoyar a las escuelas ya establecidas, pro-

porcionándoles materiales escolares, ta-les como: tableros de escritura, lápices, lápices de colores, papel, cuadernos, etc.

Patrocinio anual para estudiantes que no son capaces de pagar por su educación

Facilitar talleres y transporte para psicotera-peutas profesionales en el campo de la educación especial, en los casos de niños con capacidades diferentes, tales como: Síndrome de Down, Síndrome de Asper-ger (una forma de autismo de alto funcio-namiento), Trastorno por Déficit de Atención con Hiperactividad, etc.

Participar directamente y estrictamente no tolerar ninguna forma de abuso infantil. Queremos hacer esto mediante la crea-ción de seminarios informativos para pa-dres y maestros sobre métodos de educa-ción preventiva y metodos para la comu-nicación exitosas

Construir e implementar parques infantiles en las escuelas o áreas públicas, con la ayuda y mano de hobra de la población local

Ayudar a terminar los edificios de la escuela sin terminar, ayudar en el mantenimiento o cuando sea necesario construir nuevas escuelas

Support and encouragement of environ-mental programs

Work in coordination with village’s leaders

and non-governmental organizations, to promote the reforestation of their water resources and reforestation in general with native species of trees. Hopefully work with children in schools, so each one plants at least one tree

Promote programs of waste management. Teach the obvious importance of reduc-ing waste, as in packaging, especially in a country where recycling facilities are nonexistent

Seminars on natural methods of water puri-fication and distribution of organic wa-ter filters

Assist local programs and establish new pro-grams to develop natural products which would become an alternative to the use of chemical products

Encourage and assist local coops of hand crafted products for local trade as well as help the indigenous communities to get their products into the international market with fair trade policies. Most of their products are elaborated with natu-ral resources

Import, transport and distribution of

donations In several countries there are friends who are

collecting items such as: clothes, warm jumpers, blankets, boots, running shoes, toys, books and any product related to work in Guatemala; we are looking for used items in good condition.

Reach out sea cargoes which could be able to help us transport the donations. The aim should be to use the least money possible on administrative fees so that the greatest percentage of the funds we raise reaches the hands of people in need in Guatemala.

Apoyo y fomento de los programas am-bientales

Trabajar en coordinación con los líderes de

comunitarios y de las ONG´s, para pro-mover la reforestación de sus recursos hídricos y la reforestación en general con especies nativas de árboles. Esperamos trabajar con los niños en las escuelas, pa-ra que cada uno plante al menos un árbol

Promover programas de gestión de residuos. Enseñar la importancia obvia de la re-ducción de residuos, como en envases, especialmente en un país donde no exis-ten instalaciones de reciclaje

Seminarios sobre métodos naturales de puri-ficación de agua y distribución de filtros orgánicos

Asistir programas locales y establecer nue-vos programas para el desarrollo de pro-ductos naturales que se convertirían en una alternativa a la utilización de pro-ductos químicos

Alentar y ayudar a las cooperativas locales de productos hechos a mano para el comer-cio local, así como ayudar a las comuni-dades indígenas para llevar sus produc-tos al mercado internacional con las polí-ticas de comercio justo. La mayoría de sus productos son elaborados con recur-sos naturales

Importación, transporte y distribución de

las donaciones En varios países hay amigos que están reco-

lectando artículos como: ropa, suéteres calientes, mantas, botas, zapatillas, ju-guetes, libros y cualquier producto rela-cionado con el trabajo en Guatemala, es-tamos en busca de artículos usados en buen estado.

Contactar compañías de cargo, que podría ser capaz de ayudarnos a transportar las donaciones. El objetivo debe ser el uso de la menor cantidad de dinero posible en gastos administrativos para que el mayor porcentaje de los fondos que recaudamos llege a las manos de las personas que lo necesitan en Guatemala.

I am open to ideas, suggestions and possible projects, which would relieve the underprivileged people in Guatemala. We wish to provide volunteering opportunities of all sorts, all within the frames of cultural sensitivity and the un-derstanding that our priority is to pro-mote sustainability and self-reliance. Earlier this year, I came to the con-clusion that a foundation has to be estab-lished in Guatemala and also the importance of establishing a center of operations to co-ordinate all activities for the rest of the country, and a permanent place where all the above activities would be carried out on a permanent basis. Right now priority number one is to raise US $ 8,500 to register the foundation in Guatemala. In order for the Foundation to be a none-profit organization, the government of Guatemala requires: (a) an initial fund, (b) seven members residents of Guatemala who will represent the foundation as Board of Directors, (c) a registered accountant who will report on a yearly basis to the govern-ment the financial activity of the foundation, and (d) an attorney who will assist us in le-galizing all necessary paper work. The name of the foundation in Gua-temala will be “Friends of Friends” or “FOF” because that is what we are, friends of friends trying to do something good in the world. In my heart I wish to continue giving 100% of funds to people as I have always done, but inevitably there are running costs for the foundation. The running costs of the foundation per year will be of US$400.00 or US$33.33 per month, a relatively low cost. However, I see that this small fee is fair tak-ing into account what we will be able to do when the foundation gets registered. It is my wish that the foundation gets registered at

Deseamos proporcionar oportuni-dades de voluntariado de todo tipo, todo dentro de los marcos de la sensibilidad cultural y la comprensión de que nuestra prioridad es promover la sostenibilidad y la autosuficiencia. A principios de este año, llegué a la conclusión de que la fundación ha de esta-blecerse en Guatemala y también la impor-tancia de establecer un centro de operacio-nes para coordinar todas las actividades para el resto del país, y un lugar permanente en el que todas las actividades mencionadas se llevaran a cabo de forma permanente. En este momento la prioridad número uno es recaudar a US $ 8.500 para el registro de la fundación en Guatemala. A fin de que la Fundación sea una organización no lucrativa, el gobierno de Guatemala requiere: (a) un capital inicial, (b) siete miembros residentes en Guatemala que representarán a la fundación como Con-sejo Administrativo, (c) un contador regis-trado que informará anualmente al gobierno de la actividad financiera de la fundación, y (d) un abogado que nos asistirá en la legali-zación de toda la documentación necesaria. El nombre de la fundación en Guate-mala será “Friends of Friends”, en español quiere decir "Amigos de Amigos" o "FOF" porque eso es lo que somos, amigos de ami-gos tratando de hacer algo bueno en el mun-do. En mi corazón quiero seguir dando el 100% de los fondos a la gente como siempre lo he hecho, pero inevitablemente existen costos para mantener la fundación. With the help of Andreas Halm, the ISC Kon-stanz will donate several solar panels, for the construction and future needs of the center. However without a none-profit organization in Guatemala they cannot send the panels as it would mean high fees for transportation and import tax. Thank you Andi!

I have included in this letterthe above infor-mation as you might be interested in volun-teering in projects or wish to help me to help. Along the years I have been engaged and sponsored most of the projects myself, with the valuable help of many friends who today continue to help. What I have seen is that when people hear about what I do or see it; ten out of ten persons say they want to help. However I have to say that it is only one out of those ten who actually donates or volunteers. Updates The registration of the foundation is still in progress. We have been offered to use an already existing foun-dation of a friend to do the paperwork that needs to be done in case of receiving funds or material dona-tions if required. The building of the center Friends of Friends will be started the last week of February. We will start with toilets and showers. The idea is that after these toilets are made we can receive volunteers for the building of the rest of the center. This will take about two months and will be made with local workers. There is already a rustic shelter that will be used by volunteers and an efficient stove has been purchased for the kitchen. Actualizaciones El registro de la Fundacion aun esta en progreso. Un amigo nos ha ofrecido utilizar su fundación para hacer los papeleos en caso de recibir fondos o dona-ciones materiales. La construcción del centro Friends of Friends comen-zara la última semana de febrero. Comenzaremos con los baños y duchas. La idea es que cuando estos ya estén construidos podremos recibir voluntarios para la construcción del resto del centro. La construcción de los baños tardara aproximadamente dos meses y se harán con trabajadores locales. Ya hay una cabaña rustica que se usara para los volun-tarios y ya se ha adquirido una estufa eficiente de leña para la cocina. El website en Noruega ya se puso en marcha, échale
