Ephesians 3:20 (NIV)

Imagine Christmas coming around and not worrying about where money for gifts is coming from!

Imagine the car breaking down and having a reserve fund because you had planned for such an emergency. No sweat.

Imagine writing a check for tuition with a smile on your face because you had a plan in place.

Imagine being able to change someone’s life because you had money to give, without worry about any negative impact.

Imagine being able to talk to your spouse about financial matters and agreeing on common goals.

And imagine children, who because of your discipline, have learned to give, save and spend in a way that is pleasing to God.

This fall, members of First United Methodist Church are being challenged financially like never before. We are being asked to manage God’s resources God’s way for God’s purpose. We are being asked to look inwardly at our behavior, our practices, and reconcile them to God’s ways for us. We are being asked to take the scripture seriously as we study God’s word about money, wealth and giving.

I believe that this Imagine campaign has the power to change your life, to change your children’s lives and to make a difference in God’s work in the world. If you will give us nine weeks, participate in the Finan-cial Peace University course, and work the plan, your life will be changed.

Here is what we want you to do:

Sign up for a nine week FPU course or the seven week Legacy course on our website at www.fumct.org/imagine.

Do your weekly homework. Work the plan!

Watch what God will do in you, for you and with you!

Courses will be offered throughout the week. Find a time that works for you and register today at www.fumct.org/imagine.

Kick-off Sunday is September 18th. Groups will begin that week. This is the moment you begin to tell your money where to go, eliminate debt, and start saving. You will live like no one else now, so that you can live like no one else later!

And don’t discount for a moment the joy that is in store for you, when in obedience to God, you are managing God's resources God’s way. God is looking for people who know how to do well with what God gives them!

the Legacy journey

Over the past few weeks, you have heard about our fall emphasis, IMAGINE, which features Financial Peace University (FPU) as the primary program. Some of you may qualify to take another program, Legacy. If you have completed FPU and have continued to follow the program, or if you have managed money well on your own, you may want to consider joining The Legacy Journey. Legacy will be offered at three different times in the Fall: Sunday nights, Wednesdays at noon and Wednesday nights.

In this class, Dave Ramsey shares Biblical wisdom on the legacy we build with our wealth. What does the Bible really say about money? About wealth? How much does God expect you to give to others? How does wealth affect your friendships, marriage, and children?

The Legacy Journey consists of seven power-packed lessons that will change your family tree forever. These lessons cover topics such as:

Class Schedule

Dave Ramsey has introduced a different way to take Financial Peace University (FPU) and we hope this plan fits your schedule!

The kit with all the materials is the same.

The video presentations by Dave are the same.

The group camaraderie is the same.

The teaching points are the same.

The time in class is shorter!

And the class discussion is deeper!

We are offering the FPU FLEX program in the fall.

Flex participants commit to watch the video les-sons at home before coming to class. Videos are available online and can stream on your tablet, your laptop or your desktop computer. Class time includes a short review of the lesson and the discussion questions and case studies presented in the participant manual.

If you like the concept of “flipping the classroom” to spend more time in interactive discussion, please sign up for an FPU Flex class. Be on the lookout for more information and details on FPU Flex this fall.

IMAGINE: Financial Peace University Flex FPU Scholarships available There are FPU scholarships available for those who want to take the course but need some help with the $100 fee. If you attend eight of the nine classes, your fee can be refunded in full. Several members who believe in the life-changing power of FPU have generously donated to help others find this peace and learn to manage their finances and their relationships better.

If you would like to apply for a scholarship or if you would like to give to fund a family, contact Gina John-son at [email protected] or 205.345.7261, ext. 101.

VBS 2016 Recap

LittleLambsC o n s i g n m e n t s a l e

august 25-27, 2016

Offering Infant & Children’s Clothing, Nursery Items & Toys

The semi-annual Little Lambs Consignment Sale will be held August 25-27, 2016, offering thousands of deals to shoppers across West Alabama. The sale features gently used infant and children’s fall/winter clothing and shoes, nursery items, toys, books and accessories. The sale grows each year, with a record number of shoppers during the spring 2016 event.

Every spring and fall sale, approximately 120,000 baby and children's items pack the CAC for our community to shop and purchase. This is a “win-win” for the consignor and the buyer—and for the church! The consignor receives a portion of

the sale price, the buyer gets a great item, and the church receives the remainder of the sale price for use in the children's ministry.

Most recently we have started work on a new church activity center floor (pic-tured left). This will replace the carpet with a poly-rubber floor that will allow the CAC to be used for more events. The second project we are working on that was funded by Little Lambs, is an update to the preschool hallway of the church. This will include remodeling each of the seven classrooms and replacement of the children's restrooms in these classes. Both of these projects will be completed over the summer. In addition, Little Lambs funds have allowed for the creation of our WOW area and enabled Children’s Ministry to have new equipment and meet other needs not allocated in the church's budget.

The doors will open to the public on Thursday, August 25 at 6:00 PM for a preview sale, which offers shoppers a first chance at the items before the general public. There is a $5 admission for the preview sale and no strollers are allowed that night. On Friday, August 26 from 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM the sale will be open to the public with free admission. On Saturday, August 27 from 9:00 AM to noon the sale will include most items at half price. Volunteer slots are still available, and volunteers are able to shop prior to the public sale.

Visit www.fumct.org/ministries/little-lambs for more information or contact [email protected] or 205.239.1957.

According to the Alabama Depart-ment of Early Education, half of Alabama First Class Pre-K students enter Pre-K behind,

socially and academically. At the end of the school year, 95% of First Class Pre-K students meet or exceed age-level expectations for kindergarteners.

In May, 2016, Alabama’s First Class Pre-K, a state-funded, high quality, voluntary program was named the nation’s high-est quality Pre-K program for the 10th year in a row. Nine (9) of those are lo-cally funded. They do not qualify for the state grants and have had inadequate funding compared to the First Class Pre-K classes that are part of the state budget. These nine classes are at Arcadia Elementary, Skyland Elementary, Uni-versity Place Elementary and Woodland

initiativePre-K

Forrest Elementary. We asked these teachers for a wish list of classroom equipment and supplies. Through the generosity of our Sunday school classes, we will provide $3,300 of classroom equipment for these nine classrooms.

Now, you will have the chance to take a list of supplies for the class-room, essentials such as crayons, glue sticks, hand sanitizer, and pro-vide those. Or you can donate for cases of paper for the classrooms.

Visit the Great Hall or outside the Bridge to get a list on July 24th and 31st. The timeline is tight. We need to have these in the class-rooms on August 1. Our four year olds in Tuscaloosa need your help. Contact the church office for more information at 205.345.7261 for ways to help.

One Family, One Home, One Neighborhood

At the end of March, 2016 we began building our first of three Habitat for Humanity houses on Juanita Drive in the Alberta City area of Tuscaloosa. We had hun-dreds of volunteers that donated thousands of labor hours to help us accomplish the building and dedica-tion of this home!

Xandrea Jones and her son, Isaiah (9) are now the proud owners of a three bedroom/two bath house located at 111 Juanita Drive. This home means secu-rity for a single mother and her child. Isaiah can walk to school each day. Xandrea is proud to be a home-owner, and she knows that the body of Christ was put into action on her behalf. This home shows Xandrea and Isaiah the love and loyalty offered of a Christian community, and that is a special thing. Thank you for offering this to our neighbors!

As we continue to build homes for families on Juanita Drive, we ask that you drive through the neighborhood and take a look at the joy and life abundant that you as a church are helping create. I pray as you make that drive you see how you can play a part in our next home build. You can be the person that offers security, pride, joy, and the love of Christ to others. As we continue this work, we will be a part of transforming how our com-munity works with and for one another, making Tusca-loosa as much like the Kingdom on Earth as possible.

Imagine all of the children in Tuscaloosa County reading at grade level…

Imagine the children at Challenge Farm not having to give up their portion of food so new children can be taken in…

Imagine the security a family in need would feel if we could build a home every year in Tuscaloosa…

Imagine Honduras not having the highest infant mortality rate in the world because we have built a women's clinic...

We have the capability to change the world as a congregation. Can you imagine?

Imagine a #primelife with

Another summer has come and gone! BigStuf in July challenged us with Imagine by living the #primelife. Not neces-sarily a life of success and recognition but a life that matters.

As Christians, we believe that a prime life is possible—one full of adventure, splendor and glory—and Jesus has the answer. Jesus said in John 10:10, “I have come so that they might have life and have it to the full.”

Starting in September, we will study Dave Ramsey’s Generation Change. It is a suite of Bible studies designed to lead students to a better understanding of God, themselves and their money—and how it all works together.

We are hit from all sides with mixed messages about what’s important and what gives us value. It’s time to find a new reality—one that’s founded on biblical principles, not the latest fad or pop sensation. It’s time to tear down the fake gloss of what society calls "success" and find a true understanding of our value in Christ. It’s time for Genera-tion Change.

#everystudenteveryschoolGet ready! Discovery 2016 will be one for the ages. Discovery is a spiritual formation weekend where our students experience God’s love, the joy and forgiveness of Christ and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The middle school students will be led by the senior highs and adults of our church to experience and share God’s love. Please continue praying about this life changing weekend as we prepare students to be the “hands” and “feet” for Christ. Every student matters to God and it is our goal to help provide a life changing experience with Christ. Imagine (and pray for) #everystudenteveryschool joining in this Discovery weekend, August 12-14.

Mug MinistryDo you have an hour or two a month to devote to welcoming a visitor? Our mug ministry is seeking folks to help deliver a coffee mug to the home of a first-time visitor. It’s a friendly way to thank someone for visiting, showing hospitality to strangers, and inviting them back again! If this is something you’d like to be a part of, or if you have questions about this ministry, contact Cindy Sands at [email protected] or call the church 205.345.7261, ext. 105.
