FRIENDLY CHATTER FRIENDSHIP MANOR HCC December 2019 “Christmas Angel” Half of me wants to throw away This angel with damaged wings, Stored in the attic at Yuletide’s end With leftover Christmas things. Half of me sees that the gold on her robe Is tarnished beyond repair, And obviously the sheen is gone From her halo-crowned, golden hair. But half of me treasures the memories That crowd as I hold her near, Memories of all the joys she has seen From her treetop year after year. So I climb the ladder and put her there In what is her rightful place, Forgetting the injuries the years have brought, She still has her angle face. Through the glow she once had Through the years may depart, She retains, as always,Her hold on the heart.

“Christmas Angel” Half of me wants to throw away This angel with damaged wings,

Stored in the attic at Yuletide’s end With leftover Christmas things.

Half of me sees that the gold on her robe Is tarnished beyond repair,

And obviously the sheen is gone From her halo-crowned, golden hair.

But half of me treasures the memories That crowd as I hold her near,

Memories of all the joys she has seen From her treetop year after year.

So I climb the ladder and put her there In what is her rightful place,

Forgetting the injuries the years have brought, She still has her angle face.

Through the glow she once had Through the years may depart,

She retains, as always,Her hold on the heart.

Spotlight of the Month Friendship Manor Birds

Horizon Tweety Trouble Maker Our birds here at Friendship Manor are wonderful small parrots called Cockatiels. They are native to Australia and can be some of the best companion parrots for people to live with. The Cockatiels have lived here at Friendship Manor for approximately 20 years. They can live upwards of 30 years plus. Previous to Friendship Manor they belonged to Friendship Manor past employee and we adopted them.

How did each of the Cockatiels get their names? The Cockatiel name “Horizon”, with the bright orange cheek patches, was named for them because they were like the sun coming up over the horizon. The Cockatiel in the separate cage is named “Tweety” because it was such a good name for a bird. “Trouble Maker”, the grey and white one was named because we thought that this bird was initiating problems with Tweety. We found out later that we were wrong. Actually is was Tweety that was pulling feathers of Trouble Makers check, leaving a bald patch. We have since separated the two. Also, Tweety has a disabled wing and it is much safer to keep him in a separate cage.

Are the birds male of female? Horizon, is a male, because of his bright orange patch on this face. This is common to male wild Cockatiels. His coloration is the original wild color of Cockatiels. The females have a more muted cheek patch. Tweety and Trouble Maker are a little harder to tell for sure. Some residents watched Horizon burrow under the newspaper at the bottom of his cage.

Is this normal? Yes, this is perfectly normal behavior. When we see birds burrowing or playing with paper, they are generally imitating a nesting behavior.

What are the bird’s favorite items in their cages? The cactus wood perches are good for their feet, chewing and keeping their beaks strong and healthy. They like the easy to chew toys made with soft wood.

How often is the bird cage cleaned and who cleans it? Daily the T.R. staff cleans the bird cages and supplies new food and water.

Do the birds have to go to the veterinarian? Yes, the birds are seen for well checks at the veterinarian. Our birds are healthy and happy. Our residents have asked these great questions. They enjoy the weekly bird visits. Always feel free to stop down in the Wing I Lounge to visit them anytime. The birds love company. By: Durene Smith

Reminder to Families

A reminder to families that the season is changing, it’s time to take the summer clothing out of the Residents closets and bring in their winter clothing. The reason we say this is the closets are not big enough for all of their clothing.

If you are planning on bringing in any treats or food of any sort over the holidays or anytime throughout the year for the Resident please report to the nurse’s stations first. It’s generous and thoughtful but some Residents have food restrictions. We have a specific policy regarding

FOODS BROUGHT BY FAMILY / VISITORS

The Gold Wrapping Paper Once upon a time, there was a man who worked very hard just to keep food on the table for his family. This particular year a few days before Christmas, he punished his little five-year-old daughter after learning that she had used up the family's only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. As money was tight, he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve he saw that the child had used all of the expensive gold paper to decorate one shoebox she had put under the Christmas tree. He also was concerned about where she had gotten money to buy what was in the shoebox. Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said, "This is for you, Daddy!" As he opened the box, the father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, now regretting how he had punished her. But when he opened the shoebox, he found it was empty and again his anger flared. "Don't you know, young lady," he said harshly, "when you give someone a present, there's supposed to be something inside the package!" The little girl looked up at him with sad tears rolling from her eyes and whispered: "Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full." The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his precious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger. In a very real sense, each of us has been given an invisible golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and God. There is no more precious possession anyone could hold.

This Christmas our wishes for you are endless, I wish that you have the best health, find love, delightful days, blissful year, bright future, energetic hours and everything that comes with good tidings. Merry Christmas!

This Christmas I want you to sing, laugh, reminisce, cry if you have to, then sing some more and do it all around a full table of food, family and friends. Happy Holidays!

Christmas means home so make sure that you’ll celebrate this Holiday Season with your family and loved ones, may you feel the happiness and joy this season may bring best wishes to you and your family!

Christmas season is the time for sharing, start sharing love and hope to your family. Eventually the love you have shared will also be imparted to everyone in your society. Let love fill the air. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
