BASIC SAFETY PRECAUTIONS (CONT.)

• DO NOT refreeze frozen foods which havethawed completely. The United States Department of Agriculture in Home and GardenBulletin No. 69 says:…You may safely refreeze frozen foods that havethawed if they still contain ice crystals or if theyare still cold—below 40°F (4°C).…Thawed ground meats, poultry, or fish that haveany off-odor or off-color should not be refrozenand should not be eaten. Thawed ice creamshould be discarded. If the odor or color of anyfood is poor or questionable, dispose of it. Thefood may be dangerous to eat.

Even partial thawing and refreezing reduces theeating quality of foods, particularly fruits, vegetables, and prepared foods. The eatingquality of red meats is affected less than that ofmany other foods. Use refrozen foods as soonas possible to save as much of their quality asyou can.

CFC DISPOSAL

Your old refrigerator may have a cooling systemthat used CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons). CFCs arebelieved to harm stratospheric ozone.

If you are throwing away your old refrigerator, make sure the CFC refrigerant is removed forproper disposal by a qualified servicer. If youintentionally release this CFC refrigerant, you canbe subject to fines and imprisonment underprovisions of environmental legislation.

wwDANGERRisk of Child EntrapmentJunked or abandoned refrigerators are dangerous, even if they will sit for just a few days. If you are disposing of your old refrigerator, please follow the instructions below to help preventaccidents.

Before you throw away your old refrigerator orfreezer:• Take off the doors.

• Leave the shelves in place so that children maynot easily climb inside.

Electrical Shock HazardFor personal safety, this appliance must beproperly grounded. Have the wall outlet andthe circuit checked by a qualified electrician tomake sure the outlet is properly grounded.

HOW TO CONNECT ELECTRICITY

IMPORTANT: Please read carefully.

5

wwWARNINIG

RECOMMENDED GROUNDING METHODThe refrigerator should always be plugged intoits own individual properly grounded electricaloutlet rated for 115 volts, 60 Hz, AC only, andfused at 15 or 20 amperes. This provides thebest performance and also prevents overloadinghouse wiring circuits which could cause a firehazard from overheated wires. It isrecommended that a separate circuit servingonly this appliance be provided.

Use a receptacle which cannot be turned off witha switch or pull chain. Do not use an extensioncord. Where a standard two-prong wall outlet isencountered, it is your personal responsibilityand obligation to have it replaced with a properlygrounded three-prong wall outlet.Do not, under any circumstances, cut orremove the third (ground) prong from thepower cord.Do not use an adapter plug.NOTE: Before performing any type ofinstallation, cleaning, or removing a light bulb, turn the control (Thermostat, RefrigeratorControl, or Freezer Control, depending on themodel) to OFF and then disconnect therefrigerator from the electrical source. When youare finished, reconnect the refrigerator to theelectrical source and reset the control(Thermostat, Refrigerator Control, or FreezerControl, depending on the model) to the desiredsetting.

USE OF EXTENSION CORDSBecause of potential safety hazards undercertain conditions, we strongly recommendagainst the use of an extension cord. However, if you still elect to use an extensioncord, it is absolutely necessary that it be a UL-listed (USA), 3-wire grounding-type applianceextension cord having a grounding-type plugand outlet and that the electrical rating of thecord be 15 amperes (minimum) and 120 volts.

Use of an extension cord will increase theclearance needed for the back of therefrigerator.

CONNECTING THE WATER SUPPLY

wwWARNINGConnect to safe drinking water supplyonly.• The water pressure must be between 21 and

121 p.s.i. (1.5~8.5 kgf/cm2) on models without awater filter and between 43 and 121 p.s.i.(3~8.5 kgf/cm2) on models with a water filter.

• If water pressure does not reach 21 psi (1.5kgf/ cm2) or falls below, it is necessary topurchase a separate pressure pump for normalautomatic icemaker and water dispensingoperation.

• It is recommended that the total length of thewater feed tube does not exceed 26 ft. (8 m).

• Install the water supply line where it will not beaffected by heat.

IMPORTANT: Read all directions thoroughlybefore you begin.

• If operating the refrigerator before installing thewater connection, turn the icemaker to the OFFposition to prevent operation without water.

• All installations must be in accordance withlocal plumbing code requirements.

• Use copper tubing and check for leaks.

• Install tubing only in areas where temperatureswill remain above freezing.

• It may take up to 24 hours for the icemaker tobegin producing ice.

Tools Required• Standard screwdriver

• 7/16-in. and 1/2-in. open-end wrenches or twoadjustable wrenches

• 1/4-in. nut driver

• 1/4-in. drill bit

• Hand drill or electric drill (properly grounded)

NOTE: Refrigerator dealers offer a kit with a 1/4-in. saddle-type shutoff valve, a union, and coppertubing. Before purchasing, make sure a saddle-type valve complies with local plumbing codes.Do not use a piercing-type or 3/16-in. saddlevalve which reduces water flow and clogsmore easily.NOTE: The Commonwealth of MassachusettsPlumbing Code 248CMR shall be adhered to.Saddle valves are illegal and use is not permittedin Massachusetts. Consult with your licensedplumber.

Cold Water Supply• The icemaker water valve contains a flow

washer which is used as a water pressureregulator.

• The icemaker needs to be connected to a coldwater line with water pressure between 21~121psi (1.5~8.5 kgf/cm2) on models without a waterfilter and between 43 and 121 p.s.i. (3~8.5kgf/cm2) on models with a water filter.

CONNECTING THE WATER LINESIMPORTANT: Before connecting the tubing tothe water line, unplug the refrigerator ordisconnect the power.

• Turn off the main water supply and open thenearest faucet to relieve pressure in the line.Opening an outside faucet may help drainwater from the line in the house.

• Find a 1/2-in. vertical COLD water pipe nearthe refrigerator.

NOTE: A horizontal pipe will work, but thefollowing precaution must be taken: drill on thetop of the pipe, not the bottom. This will helpkeep water away from the drill and also keepnormal sediment from collecting in the valve.

• To determine the length of copper tubing youwill need, measure from the connection on thelower left rear of the refrigerator to the waterpipe. Add 7 ft. (2.1 m) to allow for moving therefrigerator for cleaning. Use 1/4-in. O.D.(outside diameter) copper tubing. Be sure bothends of the copper tubing are cut square.

• Using a drill, drill a 1/4-in. hole in the cold waterpipe you have selected.

Page 17: Fridge LFX21980 Install

17

CONNECTING THE WATER LINES (CONT.)

• Fasten the shutoff valve to the cold water pipewith the pipe clamp. Be sure the outlet end issolidly in the 1/4-in. drilled hole in the waterpipe and the washer is under the pipe clamp.Tighten the packing nut. Tighten the pipe clampscrews carefully and evenly so the washermakes a watertight seal. Do not overtighten oryou may crush the copper tubing, especially ifsoft (coiled) copper tubing is used. Now you areready to connect the copper tubing.

• Slip the compression sleeve and thecompression nut onto the copper tubing asshown. Insert the end of the tubing into theoutlet end squarely as far as it will go. Screwthe compression nut onto the outlet end with awrench. A flare nut wrench works best, but anopen-end wrench will suffice. Do notovertighten.

• Place the free end of the tubing into a containeror sink, and turn on the main water supply.Flush out the tubing until the water is clear.Turn off the shutoff valve on the water pipe.Coil the copper tubing as shown below.

IMPORTANT: Before connecting the tubing tothe refrigerator, be sure the refrigerator powercord is not plugged into the wall outlet.

If your refrigerator does not have a built-in waterfilter, we recommend installing an external in-linewater filter. If your water supply contains sand orparticles, that sediment could clog the screen ofthe refrigerator’s water valve. Install the filter inthe water line near the refrigerator.

NOTE: If your refrigerator is equipped with aninternal water filter, an external in-line water filtershould not be used.

• Remove the plastic flexible cap from the watervalve.

• Place the compression nut and ferrule (sleeve)onto the end of the tubing as shown.

• Insert the end of the copper tubing into theconnection as far as possible. While holding thetubing, tighten the fitting.

IMPORTANT: Tighten any connections that leak.Open the water at the shutoff valve.• Plug in the refrigerator.• Arrange the coil of copper tubing behind the

refrigerator so it does not vibrate against theback of the refrigerator or against the wall.

• Check for leaks.• Purge about 6 glasses of water that are

dispensed after refrigerator installation.NOTE: It may take a few seconds for water tobegin to flow as the internal tank fills and airclears from the lines.• Push the refrigerator back to the wall.• Set the icemaker switch to the ON position.NOTE: The icemaker will not begin to operateuntil it reaches its operating temperature of 15°F(-9°C). It will then begin operation automatically.NOTE: Throw away the first few batches of ice(about 20 pieces).

25

IN-DOOR ICE BANK

• Keep hands and tools out of the ice bank doorand dispenser chute. You could breaksomething or injure yourself.

The icemaker will stop producing ice when theice bank is full. If you need more ice, empty theice bank into the extra ice bin in the freezercompartment so the icemaker can keepproducing ice.

Shake the ice bank occasionally to level the icein it. Sometimes the ice piles up near theicemaker, causing the icemaker to misread theamount of ice cubes and stop producing ice.

NOTE: Storing cans or other items in the icebank may damage the icemaker.

Keep the ice bank door closed tightly. If the icebank door is not closed tightly, the cold air in theice bank will freeze food in the refrigeratorcompartment. This could also cause theicemaker to not produce ice.

NOTE: If the On/Off switch on the icemaker isset to Off for an extended time, the icecompartment will gradually warm up to thetemperature of the refrigerator compartment. Toprevent ice cubes from melting and leaking fromthe dispenser, ALWAYS empty the ice bin whenthe icemaker is set to Off for more than a few.

wwCAUTION

Page 26: Fridge LFX21980 Install

26

AUTOMATIC ICEMAKERIce is made in the automatic icemaker and sent tothe dispenser. The automatic icemaker can make 6ice cubes at a time, 100–130 cubes per 24-hourperiod. This quantity may vary by circumstance, including freezer compartment temperature, roomtemperature, number of door openings, freezer load, and other operating conditions.• It takes about 12 to 24 hours for a newly

installed refrigerator to make ice.• Icemaking stops when the ice storage bin is full.• To turn off the automatic icemaker, set the

icemaker switch to OFF. To turn on theautomatic icemaker, set the switch to ON.

• The cube size will vary depending on the WaterAmount Selection Setting, as well as the waterpressure of the connected water line.

• You can regulate the cube size by pressing theWater Amount Selection Button.

NOTE: It is normal that a noise is produced whenice drops into the ice storage bin.• Even when the water pipe is not connected and

the Ice Maker is turned on, the water valveoperates. The noise is generated because thewater pipe is not connected, which does notmean the icemaker is defective.

Personal Injury Hazard• Avoid contact with the moving parts of the

ejector mechanism or with the heating elementthat releases the cubes. DO NOT place fingersor hands on the automatic icemakingmechanism while the refrigerator is plugged in.

NOTE: Raising the automatic shutoff arm doesnot turn off the icemaker.

• The first ice and water may include particles orodor from the water supply line or the watertank.

• Throw away the first few batches of ice (about20 pieces) and purge about the first 6~7glasses of water that are dispensed afterrefrigerator installation.

• This is also necessary if the refrigerator has notbeen used for a long time.

• Never store beverage cans or other foods inthe ice bank for the purpose of rapid cooling.Doing so may damage the icemaker or thecontainers may burst.

• If discolored ice is dispensed, check the waterfilter and water supply. If the problemcontinues, contact an Authorized ServiceCenter. Do not use the ice or water until theproblem is corrected.

• Keep children away from the dispenser.Children may play with or damage the controls.

• The ice passage may also become blockedwith frost if only crushed ice is used. Removethe frost that accumulates.

• Never use thin crystal glass or crockery tocollect ice. Such glasses or containers maybreak, and glass fragments could be in the ice.

• Dispense ice into a glass before filling it withwater or other beverages. Splashing may occurif ice is dispensed into a glass that alreadycontains liquid.

• Never use a glass that is exceptionally narrowor deep. Ice may jam in the ice passage andrefrigerator performance may be affected.

• Keep the glass at a proper distance from theice outlet. A glass held too close to the outletmay prevent ice from dispensing.

• To avoid personal injury, keep hands out of theice door and passage.

• Never remove the icemaker cover.• If you find ice or water dispensed unexpectedly,

turn off the water supply and contact anAuthorized Service Center. Call 1-800-243-0000 (24 hours a day, 365 days a year) andselect the option to locate an authorizedservicer.

OPTIBIN ™ CRISPER HUMIDITY CONTROLWith easy-to-control humidity inside the crisperbins, the Optibin Crispers ensure fresher-tastingfruit and vegetables.

The Optibin Crispers include a humidity controlknob at the front of the crisper cover.

You can control the amount of humidity in themoisture-sealed crispers. Store vegetables orfruits requiring more or less humidity in separatecrispers. Adjust the control to any settingbetween the High and Low letter.

A lower humidity setting lets moist air out of thecrisper for the best storage of fruits.

A higher humidity setting keeps moist air in thecrisper for the best storage of fresh, leafyvegetables.

STORING FOODS• Store fresh food in the refrigerator compartment.

• How food is frozen and thawed is an importantfactor in maintaining freshness and flavor.

• Do not store food that spoils easily, such asbananas and melons, at low temperatures.

• Allow hot food to cool prior to storing; placinghot food in the refrigerator could spoil otherfood and lead to higher energy consumption.

• When storing food, cover it with vinyl wrap orstore in a container with a lid. This preventsmoisture from evaporating and helps food tokeep its flavor and nutrition.

• Do not block air vents with food or containers.Smooth circulation of chilled air keeps therefrigerator temperatures even.

• Do not open the doors frequently. Opening thedoors allows warm air to enter the refrigeratorand freezer compartments, which causestemperatures to rise.

• Never overload the door racks; overloadingmay push against the inner racks and preventthe doors from closing correctly.

Freezer compartment• Do not store glass bottles in the freezer

compartment; glass may break when thecontents are frozen.

• Do not refreeze food that has been thawed. This causes loss of flavor and nutrition.

• Do not touch cold foods or containers, especially those made of metal, with wet handsor place glass products in the freezercompartment.

• Do not use the egg box as an ice bin in thefreezer. The egg box will easily break if itfreezes.

Refrigerator compartment• Avoid placing moist food on the top refrigerator

shelves; it could freeze from direct contact withchilled air.

• Always clean food prior to refrigeration.Vegetables and fruits should be washed andwiped and packed food should be wiped toprevent adjacent food from spoiling.

NOTE: If you keep the refrigerator in a hot andhumid place, frequent opening of the door orstoring a lot of vegetables in the refrigerator maycause condensation to form. Wipe thecondensation with a clean cloth or a paper towel.
