Principal's Comments Leaders are readers, and readers are leaders! Thanks to everyone who came out to our book fair this week! There were many good books to choose from, and kids were excited about choosing their own reading adventures! Abby, Elizabeth, and Ridley (all in grade 5) took excellent ownership of the book fair, and they learned valuable lessons about coordinating a big event, such as this, as well as good life skills: e.g. quickly and accurately totalling up a purchase and making change. We will get a percentage of the total sales back in books for our school and classroom libraries. Thank you for supporting our reading wish list. Reading is such an important activity! Reading with your child is one of the best things that you can do for his or her academic success; it will also strengthen parent-child relationships and give you valuable insights into what and how they are thinking. We are all busy, but I encourage you to carve out some time to make it a daily activity, if you aren't doing so already. If you aren't able to read with them, promote reading as a daily activity and let them see you reading on a regular basis. Here is the general impact of reading each day (Nagy, Anderson, and Herman 1987): A student who reads 20 minutes per day will be exposed to 1.8 million words per year and can score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests. A student who reads 5 minutes per day will be exposed to 282,000 words per year and can score in the 50th percentile on standardized tests. A student who reads 1 minute per day will be exposed to 8,000 words per year and can score in the 10th percentile on standardized tests. "Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary." - Jim Rohn Good reading habits help children to succeed in school and in the workplace beyond. The most important reason to promote reading, however, is so that our kids can read God’s Word for themselves, to study it and correctly handle it. Help us all, Lord, to not just read or hear Your Word but to also do what it says! Fridge Door March 29, 2019

  • A Glimpse into Student Life, with Mrs. Roeper

It’s hard to believe that next week is April already! The snow will slowly melt away and the earth will spring forth new life, and the next thing you know, we will be sitting outside in our shorts enjoying the wonderful summer breeze! REALITY CHECK - it’s only April! I love spring and all it has to offer. When I look at the calendar, I see how much is going on and think to myself, “How are we going to get it all done!” I am sure our students feel that way sometimes, too. This is when we can start to experience the symptoms of stress. Stress is real and it has real symptoms. Too much stress in one’s life can affect your health. It’s important to recognize stress in your children and know how to help them manage it. Mrs. Lettie Hall, will be leading an information session on Tuesday evening about this very thing. Please plan to join us and walk away with a better understanding of what stress looks like and how help your children manage it so they will have a healthy balance in their lives (Sharpen the Saw).

Habit of the Week: Habit 5 - Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood - “I listen with my ears, eyes, and heart.” When someone is sharing with us, it is important to look at them (eyes), listen to what they are saying (ears), and care about each word they share with us (heart). This is called active listening. We choose to be fully present when they are talking. Sometimes this can be difficult to do because we think of the other things we could be doing. Sometimes we might want to give them an answer to their struggle. Listening with our ears, eyes, and heart happens when we choose to stop and really take the time to be a friend. This means that we don’t talk, we don’t try and fix it, and we give them our full attention because we are motivated by love. Next time someone is talking to you, be fully engaged, and after the conversation is finished, take a moment and reflect on your active listening skills. It’s much more difficult than you might think.

  • Kindergarten A Note from Miss Kuipers

    [email protected]

Our school-wide Student Wellness Day is Tuesday, April 2. In Kindergarten, we will spend the afternoon talking about emotions and how they get all jumbled up - sorting them and naming them helps us to talk about them and use strategies to regulate. Students will learn from books, make emotion puppets, reflect on their own emotions and strategies, and colour their very own emotion book to take home!

    Bible:

This week, we will learn about the last supper and communion. Our chapel time with the whole school will be on Thursday instead of Monday, when the Watoto Children's choir will be here. Our new memory verse is 1 Corinthians 12:27 "Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it." This verse is due on April 10.

    Math:

Over the next several weeks, we will be building on our number sense skills. This week, students will review their numerals 1-10, and we will focus on identifying numerals 10-20 (JK's)/10-50 (SK's). We will find lost numbers scattered through our class, and solve math problems in our math journals that have us writing numerals as part of the solution.

    Literacy:

We will continue to practise fact-finding as we learn more about Maud Lewis and her art. We will brainstorm ways to share what we have learned with our guests on Leadership Day. We will learn that there are many different ways to communicate, or share information, with an audience; we will explore these ways together. In phonemic awareness, we will focus on blending vowels with the sliding consonants (m, n, l, etc.).

  • A Note from Miss Russell [email protected]

For the month of April, grade 1/2 will be learning about a Canadian artist named Ted Harrison. They will each be writing a biography about his life. In addition to learning about his life they will also learn about his style of art. They will be creating various types of art that resemble his style. On April 16th, Kindergarten and Grade 1/2 will be going on a service trip to Westgate Lodge nursing home. The students will sing Easter songs, read to the residents, and play games with them. This is a great opportunity to show the love of God to our neighbours.

    Grade 1 & Grade 2

Physical Education: For the month of April, students will be working on team- building skills as they take part in cooperative

    games.

Class Goal: Since February 11th, our class has been working on each person reading 60 books at home. The students have been working hard to reach their goal and would like to extend the goal to see if everyone can reach it. Therefore, the goal end date will be extended to April 18th. Please keep recording the books your child is reading and sending it in to be tracked. Thank you for your help!

Bible: In Bible this week, we will begin our Easter unit called “Jesus’ Death and Resurrection.” The main highlights students will gather from these stories are that God used both Jewish and Roman leaders to accomplish His plan for salvation and that the Lord’s Supper is a reminder to us of His sacrifice. Finally, Jesus’ death and resurrection

    brought salvation to God’s people.

Upcoming Dates: Mental health afternoon - April 2nd Watoto choir presentation- April 4th Westgate service trip- April 16th Class goal deadline- April 18th

Creation Studies & Art: The Expedition Canada unit test was sent home on Thursday for your perusal and signature. Each student has selected a region of Canada to depict in plasticine art in the style of Canadian artist, Barbara Reid. These are on-going projects, and will be displayed and explained at an upcoming Leadership event. "God Made Us to Be Engineers" is our current unit, and students had some hands-on building experiences (with jujubes and toothpicks!) to discover structural strength and stability. In this unit we can glorify God with our building designs and structures! Habits 4, 5 and 6 will be practised.

Bible: This week, we are combining Bible with our drama unit as we are looking at the story of David and Absalom.

Music & Arts: Continuing our drama unit, we will focus on our script, which is about David and Absalom.

PE We will continue our basketball unit. This week, we will be doing some testing on shooting, dribbling, and passing.

Literacy: We are rehearsing our readers' theatre presentations (which are all fairy tales). Please come and see your kids dramatize these tales on Thurs. at 9:45 in our classroom. Students have also been working on writing assignments associated with the plays they have been practising. Spelling: Spelling lesson 20 will be introduced on Monday, April 1 and tested on Friday, April 5. Students will have some CHOICES now (instead of just sentences) to work with the words and their meanings. The new activity choices will be introduced this week and we will work on them in class.

Math: We will continue with division. We will be spending some days on long division. Also, we will look at some word problems involving division.

    mailto:[email protected]:[email protected]

Literature Circles: Please read the parent letter and schedules that were sent home with your child regarding Literature Circles. This is a small group novel study unit that will be running for the month of April. It will require some homework time doing the reading and filling out the role sheets. Class time will also be provided. It is really important that your child comes to school prepared for the meeting dates. When one child is not prepared or is absent, it affects the whole group.

Class Typing Homework: We have not yet reached our class goal. Please sign your child's planner when he or she completes a typing practice session at home.

Word Work: We will be working on sentence structure and when to use proper punctuation. We will break down the words for our spelling test on Friday.

Math: We will continue our unit on patterns and algebra. We will be having a unit test on Tuesday. A comprehensive review has been given on Friday. After this, we will begin a measurement unit on area and volume.

Social Studies/Science: The unit test will be at 11 am on April 2nd. Students have been given a study sheet. This has been a challenging unit where we have reflected on what it looks like to follow the biblical command to "look to the interests of others" and not just our own. Our next science unit is called "Conserving God's Gifts: Conservation of Energy and Resources."

PE: We will finish our basketball unit by doing some testing on core skills like dribbling, shooting, layups, and passing.

French: The students are working on a jingle about protecting the environment. Some of them are trying to combine this with our music "song writing"

    assignment.

Health: Parents, please make sure that you have read the letter that was sent home last week regarding Health lessons. We also look forward to the school-wide Wellness Afternoon on April 2nd. Our class will focus on how to respond to bullying and put-downs.

Art: We learned about the American Harlem Renaissance artist, Jacob Lawrence. His paintings depict stories of African American migration during the 1920's and 30's. Students created paintings of a migration train.

    GRADUATION PHOTO DAY

Graduation photos will be taken on Friday, April

    5th in the afternoon.

Spelling: Our spelling tests will come from our novel study on the

book, I Am David, by Anne Holm.

    Check the literature Google

Classroom for the words for Friday,

    April 5.

Math: This week will be working with the highly visual concepts found in geometry. The

assignment for next Friday is posted on Google

    Classroom.

History: We will be studying the life of Samuel de Champlain this week. We are beginning to

realize the long history of French influence in what

we now know is part of today’s Canada.

Science: We will be learning the scientific method of inquiry. This will lead to

    the learners presenting an experiment

involving heat. These experiments must be

    teacher approved.

We strive to make grade 7&8 a respectful and fun workplace.

Bible: We are working on creating an “ideal” church. The learners have unlimited

funds, yet they need to show how their

church follows the Great Commission that

Jesus gave to His disciples and to us. The

created church assignment will be due

    Wednesday, April 3.
