Sacrifice; The Symbol of Taqwa

FRIDAY SERMON

• Dear brothers in may Allah have mercy upon you, 

• On this blessed Friday and in this mosque, let us together increase taqwa to Allah by vigorously implementing all His commandments and leaving all His prohibitions, surely the best in the sight of God is the most pious. 

• Our topic today's sermon is "Sacrifice the Symbol of Taqwa.” 

• Dear brothers in Islam, • We are grateful to Allah for giving us a great privilege on this day. Besides celebrating Eidul Adha on Sunday, we are able to perform worship on this glorious Friday. 

• As for our brothers in the holy land, they will experience the most beautiful days of being able to respond to the call of pilgrimage. Verily deeds are done on the basis of the congregation are the axis of Muslim devotion to Allah. 

• No wonder, a gathering held on the day of 'Arafat has attracted millions of people from their homes and homeland to come to the peaceful and holy Mecca. 

• Next on Eidul Adha, Muslims are commanded and encouraged to sacrifice animals as the meat of these sacrifices are donated to the needy and poor solely for Allah's sake. 

• Allah says in Surah al‐Kauthar verse 2: 

• So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].

• The Prophet Muhammad SAW once said as narrated by Imam Tirmidhi and Al‐Hakim: 

• "There is no charity on Eidul Adha preferred to Allah by the son of Adam more than the spill of blood (sacrifice). 

• That sacrifice will come on the Day of Judgment with their horns, furs and claws. Indeed, the blood of these sacrifices is honored in the sight of Allah before the blood is spilled on the earth, then do the sacrifice with a pure heart." (Narrated by At‐Tirmidhi) 

• Dear brothers, • The practice of sacrifice is among the things beloved to the Prophet and he encouraged the companions to do sacrifice. 

• The ruling is recommended for those who can afford. According to the Shafi'i jurists school, it is recommended for all Muslims to perform at least once in his lifetime. 

• This practice is perform all over the world every year on Eidul Adha and days of Tasyreeq on 11, 12 and 13 Zulhijjah. 

• Similarly, in our country, sacrifice is performed either in mosques, surau, community hall, housing estate and so on. 

• Scholars agree that the sacrifice must be with the use of an'am(cattle), namely the four‐legged domesticated animals such as camels, cows, buffaloes or sheep, whether male or female.

• This is based on the word of Allah in Surah al‐Hajj verse 34: 

• And for all religion We have appointed a rite [of sacrifice] that they may mention the name of Allah over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals. For your god is one God, so to Him submit. And, [O Muhammad], give good tidings to the humble [before their Lord]

• Dear brothers, • Among the wisdom of sacrifice is: • First: Enliven the meaning of sacrifice performed by Prophet Abraham when Allah commanded him to sacrifice his son Prophet Ismail AS. 

• The faith and patience shown by Prophet Ibrahim AS and Prophet Ismail AS when implementing Allah's orders to make sacrifice has its own wisdom to be appreciated by every Muslim. 

• The second aim is to be the kaffarah(disposal of sins) of the one who perform the sacrifice, whether due to the errors that have been committed, or negligence in the discharge of duties. 

• Third, this sacrifice is to educate Muslims that they do not forget the poor and those in need of assistance after Allah gave them sustenance. 

• And fourth: Expression of joy and love among relatives and neighbors who attend and cooperate to perform the sacrifice. Thus Muslims' brotherhood will be strengthen between the individual and society. 

• The big question here is what is the main condition for this sacrifice to be accepted by Allah as meritorious deeds and produces a person of taqwa. 

• According to scholars, the conditions to achieve this is that the sacrifice must be accompanied with a sincere intention for Allah's sake and to get closer to Him. 

• Allah says in Surah al‐Hajj verse 37: 

• Their meat will not reach Allah , nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and give good tidings to the doers of good.

• Dear brothers in Allah, • Based on current developments and to ensure the sacrifice performed is in the best possible according to Islamic principles and orderly, clean with regard to animal welfare, food safety based on Islamic law, the Department of Veterinary Services of Malaysia has issued Guidelines of Slaughtering Livestock. 

• These guidelines emphasize several key points such as livestock to be slaughtered, the site of the slaughter, slaughter handling, equipment and the process of meat and waste management of the livestock. 

• Hence, all Muslims who perform or involve in the act of sacrifice must comply with these guidelines so that it coincides with the Islamic law of sacrifice and the handling of livestock. 

• Even the meat distributed must comply with safety and quality. Remember that this sacrifice should be done as best as possible, so as not to create any torture to the animal with regard to animal welfare. 

• Concluding the sermon this week, in conjunction with Eidul Adha noble pulpit reiterates that the demands and requirements of performing sacrifice is not merely slaughtering cattle once a year, but the fact is that Allah wants to test our faith as Allah has tested the faith of Abrahim, and Prophet Ismail AS.

• I would like to remind that sacrifice is one of the religious rituals to instill the spirit of willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to raise the tenets and teachings of Islam as well as relieving the love to the pleasure of the world. 

• Without religious upbringing in the practice of sacrifice, it will be difficult for us to make greater sacrifices, particularly in raising the word of Allah on this earth. 

• Thus, absorb and appreciate the philosophy and wisdom of sacrifice in order to motivate yourself to do whatever sacrifices to defend the religion, race and country.

• And leave what is apparent of sin and what is concealed thereof. Indeed, those who earn [blame for] sin will be recompensed for that which they used to commit.

• Surah al‐An’aam:120

O servant of Allah, remember that this world is a place for temporary lodging. Truly, hereafter is the everlasting and permanent abode. So let us devote to Allah for obtaining happiness and escape from the punishment of 

hellfire.

• Allah says in Surah Al Ahzab verse 56:

• Which means:“Indeed Allah confers blessing upon the prophet and His angels (ask Him to do so). O! You who have believed, ask Allah to confer blessing upon him and ask Allah to grant him peace.”

• Let us pray that may Allah SWT beplease with the khalifahs ofRasulullah s.a.w i.e Sayyidina AbuBakr al‐Siddiq r.a., Sayyidina Umaral‐Khattab r.a., Sayyinda Uthman ibnAffan r.a., Sayyidina Ali ibn AbiThalib r.a.

• And to his companions who struggle to upholdthe religion of Allah, also to his uncles SayyidinaHamzah and Sayyidina Abbas r.a. and to hisgranchildren Sayyidina Hassan and SayyidinaHussain r.a., his daughters Sayyidatina Fatimah al‐Zahraa’, his wives Sayyidatina Khadijah andSayyidatina Aisyah r.a. and the other wives.Followed by his family, companions, followers ofthe companions and those who come after themfrom time to time until the end of the world.

• O Allah, forgive all Muslims and believers,whether surviving or deceased. O Allah, grantus glory and prosperity to those who fight andspend their wealth in your way such as thosewho pay zakat, waqaf etc.

• Ya Allah, bestow your guidance and help to the leaders and kings of the Muslim countries especially to Abdaka Al‐Harith Lishariatika Al‐Sultan  Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Al‐Sultan Iskandar, the Sultan and ruler for the State of Johor Darul Takzim.

• And to Raja Zarith Sofea Binti Al‐MarhumSultan Idris Shah, Tengku Ismail Ibn SultanIbrahim, Pemangku Raja Johor and, the Princeand Princess, the royal kinship, and allMuslims.
