Oberammergau: 2010 Passion Play

Oberammergau. It’s a small town (population: 5,300) resting in the majestic Bavarian Alps that you’ve probably never heard of.

But despite its size, Oberammergau has an incredible history, a piece of which has occurred every decade since the 17th Century.

If you remember your history, the early 1600s weren’t a very pleasant time for Europe. There was the Thirty Years’ War where kings moved their armies about like chess pieces. There was famine and destruction resulting form these wars. Oh, and there were numerous outbreaks of disease and plagues that quickly decimated portions of the region. Not exactly a time period you’d want to vacation in.

But after months of suffering, the people of Oberammergau joined together in prayer and pledged that if their village was spared they would perform ‘the play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of…Jesus Christ’ every ten years. It was a promise that has been kept by the town of Oberammergau from that day.

In 2010 more than 2,000 Oberammergauers will take part in the 41st Passion Play. These actors, singers, instrumentalists, and stage technicians have rehearsed for over ten months to re-enact the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. No matter what your faith may be, you have to respect an entire population that has been willing to honor their pledge for nearly four hundred years. And whether you believe the story of the play or not, you cannot help but be moved by the beauty and power of the production.

The 2010 Passion Play will run from May 15, 2010 to October 3, 2010 in an open air stage that seats over 4,000 spectators for each performance. Tour providers expect 500,000 visitors to attend the play. The play begins daily at 2:30pm and runs for three hours at which time there will be a three hour break. The play then continues until 10:30pm.
