President’s Report

Welcome to the 47th Kununurra Agricultural Show.

Each Ag Show is unique and showcases all our com-munity has to offer – we are sure this year will be a credit to all involved.

Please look through the schedule for the new classes, entertainment and novelty events; we’re sure you’ll find something that piques your interest. This year is the international year of indigenous languages, so the themed classes have been updated and reallocated where appropriate. The stockmen’s challenge and rescue challenge are new this year; we hope you enjoy them!

The Ag Show would not be possible without the dedicated work of the Committee and the support of their families, our Society Support Officer, caretakers and our army of volunteers, tenderers and casual workers. From cleaning sheds, weeding and painting to desktop publishing, writing grant applications and data entry – there is a great deal of effort in bringing the show together.

Please tip your hat to our hardworking committee, who have all worked tirelessly. They will be at this year’s show doing all they can to make it the best it can be. We welcome new faces, so please be part of making the Kununurra Agricultural Show a roaring success.

We know there will be something for everyone to make this show memorable. See you at the Show!!

—Kath Ryan, President

Teams of two

The most common road accidents in the region are single vehicles running off the road (60%). Many of these also involve drink-driving, lack of seatbelts and/or fatigue.

Indigenous people are more than twice as likely to have a transport-related fatal injury than non-Indigenous, and fatality risk remains high with age, while declining

among the non-Indigenous community.

Initiatives involving emergency medical services are key to managing trauma on rural and remote roads, so get involved and promote your local volunteer emergency ser-

vices and help us reduce road trauma in the region!

Rescue scenarioA single vehicle has run off the road; a person is trapped inside. Your team of two will be the first responders!

1. Wake up to incessant phone noise (inswag).

2. Walk carefully to ‘appliance’ whileputting on kit & drinking cold water.

3. Shout NEE NAA NEE NAA for 1minute in ‘appliance’ while proceed-ing to the scene.

4. Request road closure.5. Put on P2 mask, safety glasses, hel-

met and gloves.

9. Report to OIC.10. Return carefully to ‘appliance’ and

park it, ready for the next team.11. Drink half a cup of cold black tea.12. Wash face.13. Go back to bed!

HAYSTACKING CHALLENGE

Sponsored by:

Entry fee $5 per 3-person team.

Cash Prizes to be won!

Junior competitors: 10-15 years oldOpen competitors: 16 years & older

ObjectThe object of the game is to stack up to 20 bales of hay (open) and 15 bales (ju-nior) to the greatest height in the short-est time possible. One team member must finish seated on top of the highest bale and the stack must stand on its own for 5 seconds to qualify.

Bales must be picked up and carried (not thrown) 5 meters to the stacking area. Teams then construct the highest possi-ble stack using as many of the bales as desired.

Teams may hold the stack to keep it from falling after the 5 second time limit has expired to enable measuring.

Time LimitsTeams will have a maximum of 5 minutes in the heats and 3 minutes in the final to construct their stack. A whistle will sound once to indicate 30 seconds to go and then twice to signal time up.

At the final whistle teams must stop building and one team member must sit on the top bale of the stack.

JudgingIf more than one team finishes with the stacks the same height, the fastest team will be the winner

The two highest and fastest teams will compete in the finals.

The judge’s decision is final!

Entertainment

Aly CookNew Zealand singer songwriter Aly Cook joined us at the Kununurra Ag Show in 2013 and 2014. Aly Cook fell in love with the East Kimberley. She knew she had to capture the magic of the landscape in music and melody. In 2013 she wrote the song “Kimberley” now featured on her album Horseshoe Rodeo Hotel.

The music video “Kimberley” was filmed in 2014, when Aly returned to perform at the Kununurra Ag Show. Kununurra Filmmaker and Photographer Vicky Biorac filmed the video and it was recut into 60sec TV Commercials to include East Kimberley businesses. Vicky’s production company is B Visual Media.

The music video was filmed over 3 days with Aly Cook singing in a variety of spec-tacular locations, notably the iconic Cockburn Ranges, Lake Argyle and Valentine Springs. Traditional Dancers from The Mirima Dawang Woorlab-gerring Language and Culture Centre feature in the music video and TV Commercial as well as well known Miriwoong Didgeridoo Player, Tommy Dodd and Singer Button Jones. The Language Cen-tre’s Marketing and Communications Man-ager Matthew Keast says that the making of the music video was a positive experience for the Mirima Dancers. With Aly’s song driving the visuals, the TV commercials were a great way of getting the message out that this is a great place to vis-it, work and live. The adverts showed early 2016 on GWN, Imparja and NZ regional TV. The song hit the #1 spot on the Country Songs Top 40 Airplay Chart.

Aly returns this year to perform at the Kununurra Ag Show for the first time since the success of her song ‘Kimberley’
